The Effect of Implementing the Blended Teaching Approach in ESP Courses on Students' Achievement and Attitudes
This paper aimed to empirically test whether implementing the blended teaching approach in ESP courses positively affects students' achievement and their attitudes towards it. To this end, explanatory type and quasi-experimental design research were carried out with two groups of students (N = 60) enrolled in the computer science department at Mostaganem University, Algeria. The sample was divided into two equal groups consisting of 30 participants. One group was part of the experimental group, they received instruction through the blended teaching approach, and another group was part of the control group who taught using the traditional teaching approach. Data collection considered two techniques: a test addressed to both groups to compare their performance within different learning environments. A 10-item questionnaire was administered to the experimental group after the treatment phase to investigate the students' attitudes towards implementing the blended approach. The results indicated statistically significant differences between groups in favour of the treatment group both in achievement and attitudes. The educational experience was satisfactory for the students taught within the blended learning environment, which positively affected their academic outcomes. The perceived satisfaction is positively associated with the marks obtained in the ESP subject. Due to the positive results revealed by this study, implementing computerised teaching in addition to the traditional approach is highly recommended. In order to facilitate teachers' mission, the stakeholders in Algerian higher education should take serious steps in improving teachers' information technology skills through providing specialised training programs for the teachers to implement blended learning efficiently and effectively.
Characterization of the Wear in the Turbojet Fins
The wear is very difficult to characterize because of its complexity and its measurement phenomenon. Our work is to prepare samples Fan blades, worn, to determine the nature of the wear and damage them. For these reasons, the characterization of these samples was conducted in different microscopic and macroscopic scales. We used non-destructive techniques such as eddy current and penetrant methods. The results obtained allowed us to see the deterioration of fins from one floor to another. These results are directly related to the effects of mechanical, thermal and pressure. It has been, in addition to detecting a different type of damage these fan blades that is the fatigue damage.
Enhancing Educational Leadership in Algeria
Little attention has been paid to the national unification of curriculum so far at the level of Algerian Higher Schools of Education and how it should be addressed, despite the recurrent launch of ministerial decrees to serve this purpose. The present paper underscores the concept of educational leadership as a real-life skill that needs to be integrated throughout the national curriculum at these schools. It also attempts to justify why it is particularly necessary to be acquired by EFL pre-service teachers before graduation and developed during their in-service teaching career. Thus, the present objective is to shed light on the meaning of educational leadership, highlight the factors that are behind the emergence of educational leadership at these institutions, and demarcate its roles and their expected contribution to the personal and professional growth of the learner.
Gamifying Linguistics Courses in Non-Technological Learning Environments
One common course subject to foreign language undergraduate students' complaints in Higher Education is probably linguistics. Educational technology tackles the issue of students' demotivation in such courses, and suggest gamification as a 21st century pedagogical problem- solving strategy. Special emphasis has been placed on Internet-based gamification responding effectively to different learner's needs and styles. Yet, gamifying education in non-technological settings, where access to digital tools is limited, is still in its infancy. The objective of this qualitative research was to explore the use of gamification in linguistics courses in such environments. An experimental case study on student-centred gamification involved twenty-three EFL learners of pre-service teacher education, at Oran Higher School of Education, Algeria. The findings included different gamified designs namely, graphs, images, drawings, puzzles, and videos. I finally proposed to use Lom's Active Learning Strategies framework as a possible effective way to implement gamification in the classroom.
Eudaimonia
This paper was an attempt to briefly explore the theoretical background of the concept of intrinsic motivation, specifically within the context of education. We tried first to revisit and relate early Greek terminologies, such as eudaimonia, and more recent concepts, such self-transcending to intrinsic motivation. We then gave details about the most important intrinsic motivational aspects within the modern framework of Self-Determination theory. We finally opted for two exemplary researches that showed the extent to eudaimonia (or self-transcending) was associated with intrinsic motivation from the perspective of Self-Determination theory.
An Investigation of Language Attitudes and Dialect Change in Frenda Spoken Arabic
The present paper is intended to examine Frenda speakers' individual attitudes towards their dialectal behaviour introduced by the use of the Arabic pragmatic marker 'yaʕayyi' The methodological framework of this study employs a self-filling written questionnaire which was conducted on-line and distributed to a total number of (48) respondent who are native and local inhabitants of Frenda. The results revealed that Frenda speakers exhibit negative attitudes towards the use of 'yaʕayyi' particularly outside their local area when they interact with non¬-local speakers. Speakers stated their willingness to shift away from using this marker outside the region as the item in question is socially-stigmatised, carries a bedouin and is measured as a sociolinguistic stereotype.
Strategies and Challenges in Research Topic Selection in Algerian EFL Pre-Service Teacher Training Schools
Among the challenges English as a Foreign Language (EFL) graduating pre-service teachers (PSTs) face in the realm of conducting research is the selection of a research topic. Those graduating PSTs seemingly struggle to select a topic that would be compatible with their own interests and research requirements. The choice of a research topic is mostly driven by many criteria, including trends, ease, time considerations, mastery of research tools, in addition to context relevance. This research is an attempt to explore the nature of research topics in EFL teacher training contexts. It aims at identifying the obstacles pre-service trainees face while selecting a research topic, and questioning the reasons and the motivations behind selecting their research topics. Using a descriptive survey, a random sampling questionnaire is administered to 100 graduating students from ENS contexts in Oran, Algiers, Constantine, and Sétif. Tips are provided to help future PST researchers overcome the identified challenges.
Lexical Variation in Oran Dialect
Migration leads to changing in the residence place of an individual who moves to another place of destination (Xu-Doeve, 2007). Internal migration specifically refers to the population mobility across a boundary within the same country (the movement outside this country is designated as external migration). Out of various Algerian regions, Oran has long received internal migrants: The process in question has stimulated a high degree of linguistic variation, very particularly at the level of lexis. Today, the present speech community is characterised by regional intra-individual and/or inter individual variability in daily conversations. In case different lexical variants are supplied by the same individual producer, variability here is known as intra-individual. Inter-individual lexical variability, on the other hand, involves more than one lexical variant articulated by more than one individual. The paper, at hand, presents and describes some illustrative lexical data obtained and recorded by interviewing a number of ninety-seven Oranees. As an example, the researcher came across the set of verbal variants [nz?l], [haw?d], [hb??] which refer to the same concept of getting down. Although such variation is important in the current findings, there are, however, other further verbal data that will be, as well, examined in the present paper.
