Preliminary evidence of key factors in successful flipping: predicting positive student experiences in flipped classrooms
Flipped classrooms have become widely adopted in educational settings (e.g., in higher education) worldwide. However, there is a need for more precise understanding of the ingredients for student satisfaction in a flipped setting. The aim of this paper was to investigate university students' experiences of the factors that create a successful flipped course. Ten measures were used to investigate the hypothesized factors affecting satisfaction, which were chosen based on the results from previous flipped classroom studies and higher educational research. These measures were grouped into three dimensions: (1) pedagogical (five measures), (2) social (three measures), and (3) technological (two measures). Exploratory factor analysis was run to analyze the adequacy of the instruments. Results revealed that the factor structure was as expected and that the instruments measuring all ten factors of teaching and learning in a flipped classroom were adequate. Furthermore, confirmatory factor analysis was used to formally operationalize the hypothesized latent constructs, and to build a structural equation model for predicting the student satisfaction of a flipped classroom. In the end, seven factors were found to predict student satisfaction with flipped courses. The highest predictor was guidance from the dimension of pedagogy, and the second-best predictor was experienced teaching for understanding. The results, limitations, and conclusion are discussed in terms of key issues and the development of a flipped classroom pedagogical design for higher education. (HRK / Abstract übernommen).
Differences in Emotional and Behavioral Problems of Students over Time: A 22-Year Cross-Sectional Cohort Study
Levels of emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents demonstrate secular changes over time, warranting ongoing investigation. Prior studies examining secular trends in a range of such problems have been conducted in the U.S. and internationally. Research in this area generally has not fully considered the school setting. This study compared emotional and behavioral problems across two cohorts of students in the U.S. assessed over a 22-year time period as part of measurement development efforts for the Scales for Assessing Emotional Disturbance Rating Scale (SAED-RSRS; Epstein et al., 2020). Specifically, analyses drew from data collected via teacher report on matched cohorts of students for the 1998 (data collected from 1996 to 1997; n = 1,148) and 2020 (data collected from 2016 to 2018; n = 1,148) editions of the SAED-RS. After establishing measurement invariance across cohorts and testing for gender differences, structural equation modeling revealed statistically significant cohort mean differences on two of the five factors of the SAED-RS, suggesting increases over time in Inability to Learn (β = 0.09, p = .024) and Physical Symptoms and Fears (β = 0.14, p = .005) that were comparable for girls and boys. There were no statistically significant differences on the remaining factors: Relationship Problems, Inappropriate Behavior, and Unhappiness/Depression. Supplemental item-level tests revealed differences on 8 of the 39 SAED-RS items. Findings suggest increases in specific problem areas that could benefit from ongoing monitoring and targeted interventions to support contemporary students.

This protein is expressed to very high levels and ompA is tightly regulated at the posttranscriptional level. It can function as an adhesin and invasin, participate in biofilm formation, act as both an immune target and evasin, and serves as a receptor for several bacteriophages. Many of these properties are due to four short protein loops that emanate from the protein to the outside of the cell. Herein it is described how the structure of this protein relates to its many functions.
ADHD rating scale adaptation in Saudi Arabia: factor structure, measurement invariance, and normative data
The ADHD Rating Scale is widely used to assess ADHD in the United States, and psychometrically sound. However, when assessments are translated into other languages, it is necessary to re-examine psychometrics. This study aimed to analyze the factor structure, test measurement invariance, and provide normative data for an adaptation of the ADHD Rating Scale in Saudi Arabia using parent ratings of 3,127 youth and teacher ratings of 2,595 students. Outcomes corroborate the validity of the two-factor correlated model for both parent and teacher ratings, and the measurement invariance among age and gender groups. The adapted ADHD Rating Scale is suitable for assessing the ADHD symptomology of youth in Saudi Arabia using the normative standards developed in this study.
Evolution of a globally unique SARS-CoV-2 Spike E484T monoclonal antibody escape mutation in a persistently infected, immunocompromised individual
Abstract Prolonged infections in immunocompromised individuals may be a source for novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants, particularly when both the immune system and antiviral therapy fail to clear the infection and enable within-host evolution. Here we describe a 486-day case of SARS-CoV-2 infection in an immunocompromised individual. Following monotherapy with the monoclonal antibody Bamlanivimab, the individual’s virus acquired resistance, likely via the earliest known occurrence of Spike amino acid variant E484T. Recently, E484T has arisen again as a derivative of E484A in the Omicron Variant of Concern, supporting the hypothesis that prolonged infections can give rise to novel variants long before they become prevalent in the human population.
Tayside Screening For Cardiac Events (TASCFORCE) study: a prospective cardiovascular risk screening study
PurposeRisk factor-based models struggle to accurately predict the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) at the level of the individual. Ways of identifying people with low predicted risk who will develop CVD would allow stratified advice and support informed treatment decisions about the initiation or adjustment of preventive medication, and this is the aim of this prospective cohort study.ParticipantsThe Tayside Screening for Cardiac Events (TASCFORCE) study recruited men and women aged≥40 years, free from known CVD, with a predicted 10-year risk of coronary heart disease<20%. If B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) was greater than their gender median, participants were offered a whole-body contrast-enhanced MRI (WBCE-MRI) scan (cardiac imaging, whole-body angiography to determine left ventricular parameters, delayed gadolinium enhancement, atheroma burden). Blood, including DNA, was stored for future biomarker assays. Participants are being followed up using electronic record-linkage cardiovascular outcomes.Findings to date4423 (1740, 39.3% men) were recruited. Mean age was 52.3 years with a median BNP of 7.50 ng/L and 15.30 ng/L for men and women, respectively. 602 had a predicted 10-year risk of 10%–19.9%, with the remainder<10%. Age, female sex, ex-smoking status, lower heart rate, higher high-density lipoprotein and lower total cholesterol were independently associated with higher log10 BNP levels. Mean left ventricular mass was 129.2 g and 87.0 g in men and women, respectively.Future plansThe TASCFORCE study is investigating the ability of a screening programme, using BNP and WBCE-MRI, at the time of enrolment, to evaluate prediction of CVD in a population at low/intermediate risk. Blood stored for future biomarker analyses will allow testing/development of novel biomarkers. We believe this could be a new UK Framingham study allowing study for many years to come.Clinical trial registrationISRCTN38976321.
Reliability and Validity of the Youth Empowerment Scale–Mental Health in Youth Departing Residential Care and Reintegrating into School and Community Settings
Empowerment has been established as an important factor in resilience in adolescence. It has also been deemed critical for youth with emotional and behavioral disorders to achieve successful outcomes across academic, social, and behavioral domains, especially during a major transition. There is currently one measure used to evaluate empowerment in youth with mental health difficulties, yet it is unclear if this is a reliable measure for youth in therapeutic residential care. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of this measure of empowerment in a sample of youth departing therapeutic residential care (N = 138) and to examine whether or not specific factors contribute to varied levels of empowerment. Findings indicate that the empowerment measure is reliable and valid for use with youth departing therapeutic residential care. Overall, youth report high levels of empowerment at discharge from care. None of the predictors in the three multivariate general linear models were statistically significant. Limitations and implications are discussed.
The effect of operating conditions on neutral sulphite semi-chemical pulping properties: an industrial pilot plant study
The influence of pulping variables on the pulp and black liquor properties for a neutral sulphite semi-chemical pulping system was investigated in a pilot plant pulping setup situated at an industrial paper mill. Eucalyptus chips were used as raw material and the operating variables were Na2SO3 charge (8–18% w/w on oven-dry wood), Na2CO3 charge (0.5–3.0% w/w on oven-dry wood) and maximum cooking temperature (160–180 °C). Response surface methodology was used to parametrize empirical models to find the optimal conditions for maximizing the short-span compression strength index of the pulp. The derived regression models for the black liquor properties and the pulp hypo number had R2-adjusted values above 0.8 and p-values for overall significance below 0.05. The derived regression models for the handsheet strength properties had R2-adjusted values between 0.3 and 0.45 and p-values for overall significance either below 0.05 or between 0.05 and 0.1. The sulphite charge, followed by the carbonate charge, had the most notable effect on the evaluated properties with the effects of temperature being less significant. Optimization of the pilot plant system showed that the short-span compression strength index of the pulp could be maximized to 26.7 N m/g, using a sulphite charge of 9.4% (w/w on oven-dry wood) and a carbonate charge of 1.94% (w/w on oven-dry wood), similar to short-span compression strength indices typically achieved using other pulping processes.
Factor Structure of the Scales for Assessing Emotional Disturbance – 3 Rating Scale for Students Identified With Emotional Disturbance
This study examined the internal structure of the Scales for Assessing Emotional Disturbance-3 Rating Scale (RS), a teacher-completed RS developed to measure emotional disturbance (ED). As defined in U.S. law and regulations, ED involves five characteristics or patterns of behavioral and emotional maladaptation. RS data obtained on a sample of students with ED were used to examine validity evidence based on the internal structure of the assessment. Of particular interest was the extent to which multivariate factors derived from the RS data conform to the five characteristics of ED stated in the definition. Results indicate that the RS data fit a 5-factor model reasonably well. A subsequent bifactor analysis identified a considerable proportion of common variance across factors, suggesting the presence of a strong general ED factor, two distinct group factors (Inability to Learn and Inappropriate Behavior), and three weak group factors. The findings provided evidence of the validity of the SAED-3 RS based on internal structure and pointed to support for use of the RS in contributing to the process of determining whether a student qualifies for the ED education disability. Implications for improved research on the nature of ED and how students with ED can be better served are discussed.
