MODERN LEADERSHIP TYPES AND OUTCOMES: THE CASE OF GREEK PUBLIC SECTOR
The aim of this research is to highlight the characteristics of modern leadership types, under the Multifactor Leadership Theory, i.e. the Transformational, Transactional and Laissezfaire Leadership types. The research objectives focus on distinct effects of these leadership types on both “followers’ (employees’) perceived leadership outcomes”, namely the “followers’ perceived leadership effectiveness” and the “followers’ job satisfaction”, according to Bass. The research was conducted by a case study in the Greek public procurement sector, with the usage of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Transformational Leadership was found to strongly and positively determine both the “followers’ perceived leadership effectiveness” and “followers’ job satisfaction”, while the positive impact of Transactional Leadership on these two criteria proved to be less strong, followed by the strongly negative effect of Laissez-faire Leadership. The conclusions drawn can be applied in public sector organizations with high performance standards.
The Role of Work-Group Emotional Intelligence in Learning Organizations: a Case Study of the Greek Public Sector
The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of Emotional Intelligence at work-group level on Learning Organization, examining five dimensions of L.O. according to Senge’s model, within a framework of Greek Public Administration reform. The research was conducted among Greek Independent Administrative Authorities, a modern European institution that among others guarantees transparency and optimum performance, leading to upgraded public sector services. Our research is a quantitative research consisting of 257 valid questionnaires out of a sample of 300 employees. Our research highlights the strong correlation between Work-group Emotional Intelligence and Learning Organization. A constructive emotional climate affects the vision of the organization, while emotions have an impact on employees’ attitudes/behaviours and on the learning process within the group as well as on the diffusion of information. Finally, our research demonstrated that emotional intelligence affects the personal improvement and development of employees. Managers should focus on developing more emotionally intelligent employees by cultivating an emotional environment that promotes positive behaviours, system thinking and group learning. Thus, the benefits generated can be identified at both individual and organizational level, including higher levels of employees’ personal development, better communication processes and implementing the organization’s vision.
Correlation of telomere length between full and preterm neonates and their mothers
Telomeres are nucleoprotein complexes that serve as protective caps from the DNA damage response at the ends of chromosomes. During aging, telomeres gradually shorten, and genomic instability arises through the induction of senescence. The present study aimed to elucidate the association between maternal characteristics, their medical history and pregnancy details with the telomere length (TL) of neonates. Blood samples were collected from 54 mothers and their neonates, and DNA extraction and measurement of TL was performed by quantitavive PCR. The results showed that maternal TL was negatively correlated with body mass index before pregnancy. A weak to moderate significant correlation was observed between maternal and neonatal TL. Non-significant differences were found between the maternal TL and their smoking habits, as well as medical and gestation history.
Rejection reaction to stabilizing bolts after ACL reconstruction: a case report
A case of an adverse reaction to the stabilizing bolts after an ACL reconstruction is presented. A 21-year-old patient had an ACL reconstruction using the Mark II system. Six months post op, he presented to clinic having formed a pretibial swelling with serous discharge. There was mild tenderness over the femoral scar. Successive cultures of the tibial cyst effluent showed no microorganism growth and laboratory tests were normal. One year post op, symptoms and swelling persisted. X-rays showed periosteal reaction around the femoral bolt and resorption with widening of the distal tibial tunnel. An adverse reaction to the bolts was suggested as the possible cause. Surgical exploration was then performed. During the operation, free fluid evacuated from the femoral site and the tibial cyst was completely excised. All specimens were sent for culture, which were proven negative. Tibial and femoral bolts were both removed and no communication of the osseous tunnels to the joint was found. An arthroscopy was performed at the same time which showed degeneration of the ACL autograft, but an otherwise normal joint. Eighteen months later, the patient was symptom free and all inflammation indices still within the normal range.
