The Canadian Earth System Model version 5 (CanESM5) is a global model developed to simulate historical climate change and variability, to make centennial-scale projections of future climate, and to produce initialized seasonal and decadal predictions. This paper describes the model components and their coupling, as well as various aspects of model development, including tuning, optimization, and a reproducibility strategy. We also document the stability of the model using a long control simulation, quantify the model's ability to reproduce large-scale features of the historical climate, and evaluate the response of the model to external forcing. CanESM5 is comprised of three-dimensional atmosphere (T63 spectral resolution equivalent roughly to 2.8∘) and ocean (nominally 1∘) general circulation models, a sea-ice model, a land surface scheme, and explicit land and ocean carbon cycle models. The model features relatively coarse resolution and high throughput, which facilitates the production of large ensembles. CanESM5 has a notably higher equilibrium climate sensitivity (5.6 K) than its predecessor, CanESM2 (3.7 K), which we briefly discuss, along with simulated changes over the historical period. CanESM5 simulations contribute to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) and will be employed for climate science and service applications in Canada.

The gelding of politicians
by
Lazare, Mike
2009
They are now discriminating against males. We now have the NDP refusing to allow males to run in certain ridings. In 2009 most would say this cannot be true. Unfortunately under Affirmative Action (NDP double speak ) it is now taking place in our riding. I have no doubt Leslie McNabb could be an asset to provincial politics but we will now never know if a male could have done a better job. Maybe we had a Broadbent or a Douglas.

Sir, after seeing the difference between the amount of money our seniors receive, $1,012 per month with the Guaranteed Income Supplement and the handouts given to landed immigrants, which is $1,890 per month, plus each can get an additional $580 per month for a total of $2,470.

NDP's affirmative action really just discrimination

James, Carole

I would suggest the NDP have a vote of non-confidence against [Carole James] before the next provincial election. A vote for the best person regardless of sex, colour or sexual taste is the way to go in a democratic society. Sidelining the best person for the job because he happens to be a he is ludicrous. Reverse discrimination is still discrimination.

Two hospitals are just fine
by

I have been reading with some disbelief the ongoing battle over where to situate a new hospital to service Campbell River and Courtenay-Comox residents. Both cities have seemed to have lost one major element in this debate which is called \"common sense\".

Awarding the Quebecois special status is a slap in the face for all other Canadians
by
Lazare, Mike
2006
Canada is a melting pot nation. No one group of people should be more important than any other. I do not blame Quebecers for continually bringing up the notion that they are special; I blame the politicians for their collective lack of backbone for not standing up and saying every Canadian citizen has the same rights and privileges.

98% of systems okay
by
Lazare, Mike
2006
With regards to the upcoming vote on whether to approve a sewer system or not for Black Creek, I attended an information meeting on Jan. 19, by the regional district. I thought the meeting to be very well attended, but was surprised by the lack of input by most of the people who would be involved with a large outlay of their cash. That aside, I felt that members of the regional district who attended were very much in favor of the proposal and did their utmost to sell it to us. I personally was hoping for a less biased approach from them.

Is birth control the answer in Third World countries
by
Lazare, Mike
2005
Simply put, it comes under the heading of \"Birth Control.\" Very few people in governments will talk about this problem. Should we feed starving people - yes - but I also believe that with the food, should come education. Sorry, but the days of the large family in most parts of the world are over. If you cannot feed them, and educate them, stop having them. Simplistic you say. I agree, but common sense eventually has to be used. Giving more and more of our G.N.P. to underdeveloped countries is a band-aid solution.
