Corporate social responsibility and SMEs' performance: mediating role of corporate image, corporate reputation and customer loyalty

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to evaluate the essential role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on SMEs' performance by exploring the mediating role of corporate image (CI), corporate reputation (CR) and customer loyalty (CL) between CSR and firm performance (FP) in the context of an emerging country.Design/methodology/approachBased on an extended literature review on CSR, CI, CR and CL studies, the authors evaluate the impact of these four constructs on SMEs' performance in an emerging market. The paper follows a quantitative approach. The study sample was composed of 482 responses covering top executives, managers and experts. The Smart PLS SEM version 3.3.2 was used to analyse the data of the small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of Vietnam in the year 2020–2021.FindingsThe authors' findings reveal significant and positive relationships amongst CSR, FP, CSR and CI, CSR and CR, CSR and CL, and most importantly, the findings add value to the current knowledge by exploring the mediating effect of CI, CR and CL between CSR and FP.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was conducted in Vietnam. As a result, the findings of the study might not be applicable for other countries, if the economic and environmental settings are different from that of Vietnam. Therefore, future research should consider for other countries, other regions. Second, due to the purpose and priority of the study, CI, CR, and CL was employed as mediators amongst the relationship between CSR and FP. Thus, future research should consider other mediators or moderators in such a relationship to see how CSR generates outcomes in the new associations.Practical implicationsThe study regarding the role of CSR in enhancing the performance of SMEs can motivate firm's chief executive officers (CEOs) to be proactive in getting involved and practising CSR in a consistent manner. Second, the above discussion draws a very important implication for the executive level, the management level of the enterprise, which enterprises should balance the interests of business, customers, other stakeholders, the environment and society in order to optimise CSR outcomes for improving competitiveness and developing sustainably. This implication is particularly important to the survival and development of SMEs in a challenging emerging economy.Social implicationsThe study widens the literature regarding relationship between CSR and SMEs' performance. Besides, the study supports stakeholder theory that explains why CSR positively affects firm's performance. The significant mediating roles of CI, CR and CL were positively confirmed in the study. Although previous studies determined that such roles are strategic source of competitive advantages of enterprises, however, how CSR involved in enhancing the roles has not been deeply explored and integrated. Third, the findings of the study support the resource-based view (RBV) and resource-based perspective that explains why firm should engage in CSR activities, and CI, CR and CL can enhance firm's performance by providing strategic source of competitive advantages that facilitate business to improve its performance in sustainable direction.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, the current literature on CSR and FP shows that, to date, there has been little empirical research on the mediating mechanism of CI, CR and CL in the link between CSR and FP for SMEs. The findings of the study may have great implications for entrepreneurs and top management with respect to the strategic perspectives to drive the businesses and to improve firm's performance in a sustainable direction in the context of emerging markets. In addition, the finding might be of great interest to – and motivate – SMEs' managers to engage with CSR actions where such businesses were or are situated during and after the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. By that understanding, the Government might allow for innovative and groundbreaking policies or the reformation of old policies to leverage businesses to promote their strengths towards sustainable development in the new economic settings. The findings of the study may be a significant contribution to SMEs in Vietnam and in other emerging economies.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the mechanism of how circular economy practices (CEP) and circular economy entrepreneurship (CEE) promote sustainable supply chain management (SCM) and facilitate sustainable performance (SP) for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the food value chain in emerging economy. In this context, this mechanism involves the mediating role of sustainable SCM in the relationship between CEP and SP. Simultaneously, it involves the moderating role of CEE in the link between CEP and sustainable SCM.Design/methodology/approachThe paper follows a quantitative approach. Based on systematic literature review on the field, the nexus amongst the constructs were proposed. The Smart partial least square (PLS) version 3.3.2 was employed to analyze structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate the relationships between constructs and latent variables. There were 457 valid responses obtained from the survey participants, those are managers at senior and middle levels. The data collected was then used for quantitative analysis and assessment.FindingsThe main finding of this study is twofold. First, it sheds light on how CEE associates in strengthening the influence of CEP on sustainable SCM. By this way, the better the CEE, the stronger the impact of the CEP on the sustainable SCM, leading to long-term sustainability. Second, it reveals how sustainable SCM mediates the link between CEP and SP. By this way, the better the CEP, the more the SCM is sustainable, ultimately leading to SP. This contribution is paramount because experimental research on this mechanism has not been intensively explored in the current literature.Originality/valueThe originality of this study is the provision of scientific knowledge and practical mechanisms for the introduction and application of CEP to business behaviors and practices in a real-world context that exists as a research gap in the current literature. In this respect, this study contributes to expanding the existing literature in the field by providing empirical evidence for the mechanism as stated. Furthermore, it provides a practical mechanism for SMEs in given context to enable them apply efficiently the circular economy perspective to their businesses to help them achieve SP. These contributions may be of interest to business practitioners, business leaders, academics and policymakers in the areas that are of their concerns.

Linking big data, sustainable supply chain management and corporate performance: the moderating role of circular economy thinking

PurposeThis paper aims to assess how big data–driven supply chain management (BDSCM) influences sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) to achieve sustainable corporate performance (SCP) for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an emerging economy such as Vietnam, besides exploring whether Circular Economy Thinking Application (CETA) moderates the relationship between BDSCM and SSCM.Design/methodology/approachThis study collected survey data from 495 SMEs in the food supply chain sector. It employed the PLS-SEM (Partial Least-Squares Structural Equation Modeling) technique to evaluate the hypothesized relationships.FindingsThis study found that BDSCM positively, directly and indirectly, impacted SCP. SSCM partially mediated the correlation between BDSCM and SCP. Additionally, CETA moderated the relationship between BDSCM and SSCM. CETA had a direct and positive effect on SSCM.Originality/valueThe insights into how BDSCM influences SSCM to achieve SCP for SMEs in the food value chain in an emerging economy like Vietnam provides an original value. Moreover, the novelty of this study is further reinforced by the coverage of the newfound mechanism, where CETA moderates the relationship between BDSCM and SSCM, directly and positively enhancing SSCM. These contributions could interest business practitioners and academics.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on small and medium-size enterprises’ (SMEs') performance by exploring the role of mediating variables such as brand trust (BT) and brand loyalty (BL) in the context of an emerging market.Design/methodology/approachBased on a extend literature review on CSR, BT and BL studies, the authors evaluate the impact of those construct on SMEs’ performance in an emerging market. The paper follows a quantitative approach. In total, 247 responses were collected from 300 samples. The Smart Partial Least Squares SEM (version) was used to analyze the data of the SMEs of Vietnam in the year 2020.FindingsThe findings revealed significant and positive relationships among the variables in the model, such as CSR and firm performance (FP), CSR and BT, CSR and BL, as well as the mediating effect of BT and BL between CSR and firm performance.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, the sample was composed of small business from different segments, thus the respondents' perspective about CSR can differ according the impact of the business on society. Therefore, future studies could address businesses from a single segment to get a deeper understanding of their knowledge and involvement with CSR. Second, a cross-cultural study in emerging countries can be a rich venue for future research. Third, this study was developed through a quantitative approach; thus, the future research can apply qualitative approach or mixed methods to extend the study findings.Practical implicationsManagerial level of firm should prioritize noneconomic-related CSR; however, those will ultimately drive financial indicators of FP. The result is reasonable because firm simultaneously keeps committed with its stakeholders by delivering the committed qualification, transparency in operation and consistency in communication, environment respect, employee development and social welfare integrated directly into business activities. Those will result in creating love, trust and admiration from stakeholder, customers for brand and firms will get their engagement and support in many ways. This implication suggests that firm should incorporate CSR strategy into their core business activities and practice properly toward its stakeholders.Social implicationsThis study contributes to the CSR literature in emerging context by shedding light on the roles of CSR in FP with the mediation roles of BT and BL. Most CSR studies focused on Western context as developed economy, thus less attention has been paid for emerging economy. While there is increasing interest CSR in Vietnam, traditional culture and its distinctive economic and political structure has had a great influence on CSR in Vietnam. Thus, this study is important and meaningful for business practitioners, investors, shareholders and policymakers toward sustainable development for firms and Vietnam as a whole.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that explores the mediating role of BT and BL between CSR and FP for SMEs. The findings of this study may be of great implications to entrepreneurs, top management with respect to strategic perspectives to drive their businesses and to improve their FP in a sustainable direction in contexts of emerging markets. In addition, this finding may be of great interest to motive SMEs' managers to engage with CSR actions where those businesses are situated during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. By that understanding, Government may consider for policy reforms/innovation/groundbreaking to leverage businesses to promote their strengths toward sustainable development in the new economic settings. The findings of this study may be of significant contribution to SMEs in Vietnam and in others in emerging economies.

How do food supply chain performance measures contribute to sustainable corporate performance during disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic emergency?

PurposeThis study aims to the development of the scale of supply chain performance measures (SCPMs), food supply chain resilience (FSCS) and sustainable corporate performance (SCP) in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an emerging market. Based on this purpose, the study examines the relationships between SCPMs and SCP by exploring the mediating role of FSCS in emerging markets.Design/methodology/approachBased on a comprehensive literature review on the SCPMs, FSCS and SCP, the author evaluates the nexus of these constructs on disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic emergency in an emerging market. The article follows a quantitative approach. A total of 567 valid responses from managers at senior and middle levels were received and used for data analysis. The Smart PLS version 3.3.2 was employed to analyse Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to investigate the relationships between constructs and latent variables.FindingsThis study provides some theoretical contributions to expand the extant literature on the domain of SCPMs. First, the findings determine that multidimensional measures of flexibility, diversity, agility, inventory efficiency, redundancy and robustness are appropriate for measuring food SC performance in disruptions during the COVID-19 emergency. Besides, this study enriches the existing literature on SC disruption by providing extensive empirical evidence on SCPMs in disruptions during the COVID-19 emergency. Finally, this research provides an integrated empirical model that explores the link between the identified food SCPMs to FSCS and SCP.Originality/valueThe contributions may be of interest to business practitioners, business leaders and academics. In addition, this study provides empirical evidence to demonstrate that food SC performance, as measured by these measures, is strongly related to the firm's food supply chain resilience. This is the novel contribution of this study to the current literature on food SC management. Furthermore, this study provides further empirical evidence demonstrating the partial mediating role of the firm's food supply chain resilience in the nexus between food SC performance and SCP. The unique contribution of this study is an extension of the body of knowledge of SC management literature from a comprehensive approach by providing a proven set of performance measures of SC management to which it can drive SC resilience and SCP for food manufacturing SMEs in an emerging economy that hardly found in the current literature.

The boosting of the total quality management on corporate green growth in emerging markets: the mediating roles of corporate social responsibility and customer loyalty

PurposeThe primary purpose of this research is to examine how total quality management (TQM) boosts corporate green growth (CGG) with the involvement of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and customer loyalty (CL) as mediators in the relationship between TQM and CGG for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in an emerging economy.Design/methodology/approachThis research adopts a quantitative approach. According to the scope of this study, constructs of TQM, CSR, CL and CGG and the conceptual relationships between them are established using a systematic literature review. This study uses enterprise-level primary data collected from a questionnaire-based survey. The respondents are those holding managerial positions in their enterprises. There were 424 valid responses obtained following the necessary screening steps to ensure the eligibility of the collected data for analysis using AMOS version 20.FindingsThis study reveals that TQM has a positive and significant relationship with CSR, CL and CGG. Amongst these direct connections, TQM has the most substantial influence on CGG, followed by CL and CSR. Furthermore, the findings assert that CSR positively and significantly affects CGG and CL. When comparing the weighting of these effects, the results show that the impact of CSR on CGG is stronger than that on CL. Furthermore, the results confirm that CSR and CL partially mediate the relationship between TQM and CGG, both independently and simultaneously. The article also discusses the theoretical and managerial implications based on the stated findings.Originality/valueThe originality of this study stems from its contribution to enriching the body of the current literature on TQM and its combined influence on corporate performance. In this respect, this study adds to the existing literature by providing additional empirical evidence on the mechanism by which TQM boosts CGG with the involvement of CSR and CL in mediating the stated relationship between TQM and CGG for SMEs in an emerging economy. To the best of the author’s knowledge, such holistic incorporation is rare in the current literature. Furthermore, this study sheds light on the TQM enabling factors that are extended beyond the quality or technical scope as previously assumed. The stated contributions deserve to be originally derived from the attempt of this scientific work that may be of interest to academics, professionals and business practitioners.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a growing issue in emerging markets. This study aims to evaluate the impact of CSR on firms' performance by exploring the role of mediating variables such as corporate reputation (CR) and customers' purchasing intention (CPI). We use the quantitative technique of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques to analyze the data of the small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) from the Southern Vietnam in 2020. The findings suggest a positive and significant impact of corporate/ social responsibility on firms' performance through mediating role of CR and CPI. This study contributes to the literature on corporate social responsibility and firms' performance of SMEs in the emerging country context. The outcomes of this study can be used by entrepreneurs, top management as an attempt to boost the performance of the SMEs in emerging markets by applying CSR measures for sustainable competitive advantage. A mediating role of corporate reputation (CR) and customers' purchasing intention (CPI) as a value-added contribution to this study.

Influences of the ecotourism industry in Mekong Delta – Vietnam: The mediating role of Tourist Satisfaction

The aim of this paper is to examine those factors that can affect the performance of the ecotourism industry in Vietnam. The well-known influencing and meditating factors are identified with strong connections in the ecotourism industry. Based on an extended literature review on travel service, safety and nature for tourist satisfaction, while the culture, facilities, native people, food, beverage and experience factors. The collected data was analyzed by using the structural equation system. The current work presents the exploratory survey with data collection technique through different surveys. One of the surveys relates to tourist destination and tourism companies in Mekong Delta. The tourist satisfaction has the strongest impact on the performance of ecotourism industry and has a strong impact to sustain the development of the ecotourism industry in Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The obtained results indicate that the impacts of travel service, safety and nature for tourist satisfaction, while the culture, facilities, native people, food, beverage and experience factors also play an important role in the tourist satisfaction. These findings indicate that by improving the performance of the ecotourism industry, the tourist satisfaction must be enhanced. To the best of our knowledge, these findings help the managers tourism sector, tourism companies, the local authorities, etc., to review the overall matrix to see the what and the how to enhance the performance of the ecotourism industry in Mekong Delta. Effects of quick response to COVID-19 with change in corporate governance principles on SMEs’ business continuity: evidence in Vietnam

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the negative impacts of the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) emergency on small- and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) business continuity (BC) by examining the moderating role of corporate governance principles (CGP) on SMEs’ BC in the context of an emerging market.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on an extended literature review on the negative impacts of the COVID-19 emergency, CGP and BC studies, the authors evaluate the impact of these constructs on SMEs’ BC in an emerging market. This paper follows a quantitative approach. The study sample was composed of 334 responses covering directors, managers and owners of enterprises. The Smart PLS SEM version 3.3.2 was used to analyse the data from SMEs of Vietnam in the year 2021.
Findings
The findings of this study clarify the areas of the COVID-19 consequences that negatively affect the BC. In addition, this study reveals that CGP moderates the links between COVID-19 outcomes and BC, whereby good CGP can facilitate a business to reduce the adverse effects of COVID-19 on BC. In addition to this, good CGP can help a firm to enhance its capability to respond to fluctuations in the external environment of the business.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first research that examines the moderating role of CGP. The originality of this study is that it gives an insight into how SMEs in an emerging economy overcome the adverse effects of the COVID-19 emergency on BC to keep their business going, and moreover, have the ability to move towards sustainability in today’s challenging context. This study provides the theoretical and managerial implications that may be of great interest to the academics, business practitioners and policymakers.

Purpose This study investigates the impact of human capital (managers' capital, employees' capital) and orientation (market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation) for accelerating the digitalization process and improving the firm performance. It also studies the role of supply chains as both direct and indirect mediators of the correlation between digitalization and business performance.Design/methodology/approachThis article aims to develop an empirical study using a random sampling technique and survey data collected from 368 managers and owners of different food enterprises in Vietnam. The study adopted a methodological approach quantitatively. Analysis of the relationships and confirmatory factors was performed using structural equation modeling (SEM), a technique to evaluate the proposed relationships.FindingsIn line with expectations, the findings emphasize the impact of human capital (managers' capital, employees' capital) and orientation (market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation) for accelerating the digitalization process and the role of supply chains as both direct and indirect mediators of the correlation between digitalization and improving the firm performance, in the context of emerging markets.Originality/valueThis is an important investigation, according to the authors' knowledge, regarding the role of developing human capital (managers' capital, employees' capital) and orientation (market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation) as a key strategy for accelerating the digitalization process and improving the firm performance.
