Anthropogenic nitrogen is changing the East China and Yellow seas from being N deficient to being P deficient

Addition of the increased anthropogenic nitrogen (NOx and NHy) emitted from northeast Asian countries to the Yellow and East China seas and coastal waters around Korea has resulted in an unparalleled increase in the nitrate (N) concentration relative to the phosphate (P) and silicate (Si) concentrations in the upper ocean. We found that for the Yellow Sea the increase in N over P was largely explained by increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition, whereas for the northern East China Sea, downstream of the Changjiang River plume, the trend in N increase relative to P was more associated with a change in the combined input of nutrients from atmospheric deposition and riverine discharges. In contrast, the dynamics of the N to P relationship in the southern East China Sea was largely controlled by a change in the intrusion intensity of the Kuroshio Current, which has a low N : P ratio. The disproportionate and persistent input of nutrients to the marine waters of this region over the past four decades has transformed extensive areas from being N deficient to being P deficient, and has concurrently decreased the concentration of Si relative to N. In coastal waters around Korea in particular, these shifts in the nutrient regime have been accompanied by a change from diatom-dominated to dinoflagellate-dominated blooms. Given the complexity of coastal ecosystems, the associations between changes in nutrient regimes and biological changes need to be investigated in other coastal areas receiving increasing loads of anthropogenic nitrogen.

Changes in cortisol awakening responses (CAR) in menopausal women through short-term marine healing retreat program with specific factors affecting each CAR index

Recent studies have reported that the cortisol awakening response (CAR) is associated with various health risks. The different indices used to represent the CAR include the average cortisol levels in the morning immediately after waking (AVE); the total area under the curve of cortisol levels with respect to ground (AUCg); and the area under the curve of cortisol levels with respect to increase (AUCi). However, it is unclear which physiological phenomenon each index reflects. This study investigated the factors, such as stress, circadian rhythm, sleep, and obesity, affecting the CAR through a marine retreat-based healing program in which the anticipated stress of the participants could be controlled to some degree. Fifty-one menopausal women in their 50s and 60s were included, who performed beach yoga and Nordic walking for four days at an uncontaminated beach. The baseline CAR indices showed that the AVE and AUCg were significantly higher in the high sleep efficiency group than in the low sleep efficiency group. However, the AUCi decreased substantially with increasing age. The changes in the AVE, AUCg, and AUCi were calculated through the program, and it was found that the AVE and AUCg increased significantly more in the obese group than in the normal and overweight groups. The obese group also showed significantly decreased serum triglyceride and BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) levels compared to the low BMI group. Thus, it was confirmed that AVE and AUCg reflected physiological phenomena affected by factors such as sleep efficiency and obesity, whereas the AUCi was affected by factors such as age. In addition, the marine retreat program can improve the low levels of CAR associated with obesity and aging.

Effect of the Marine Exercise Retreat Program on Thyroid-Related Hormones in Middle-Aged Euthyroid Women

This study aimed to investigate the effects of a marine exercise retreat program on thyroid-related hormone levels. A total of 62 middle-aged euthyroid women participated in a 6-day marine exercise retreat program. Using thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) hormone levels, the participants were divided into high and low-hormone-level groups. Despite decreased TSH and fT4 levels after the program, the factors influencing changes in each group were different. TSH levels were influenced by changes in the normalized low frequency (nLF) of heart rate variability and carbon monoxide (CO) from all the participants, and changes in body fat percentage, nLF, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure level in the high TSH group. fT4 levels were influenced by changes in body mass index (BMI), NO2 exposure, and particulate matter diameter of 10 µm or less (PM10) exposure in all participants. Changes in BMI and CO exposure influenced the low fT4 group. Lastly, changes in the exercise stress test affected the high fT4 group. Thus, the marine exercise retreat program affected euthyroid thyroid-related hormone levels, and influencing factors differ depending on the initial value of the hormone.

Short-Term Effect of Temperature on Daily Emergency Visits for Acute Myocardial Infarction with Threshold Temperatures

The relationship between temperature and myocardial infarction has not been fully explained. In this study, we identified the threshold temperature and examined the relationship between temperature and emergency admissions due to MI in Korea.
Poisson generalized additive model analyses were used to assess the short-term effects of temperature (mean, maximum, minimum, diurnal) on MI emergency visits, after controlling for meteorological variable and air pollution (PM10, NO2). We defined the threshold temperature when the inflection point showed a statistically significant difference in the regression coefficients of the generalized additive models (GAMs) analysis. The analysis was performed on the following subgroups: geographical region, gender, age (<75 years or ≥ 75 years), and MI status (STEMI or non-STEMI).
The threshold temperatures during heat exposure were for the maximum temperature as 25.5-31.5°C and for the mean temperature as 27.5-28.5°C. The threshold temperatures during cold exposure were for the minimum temperature as -2.5-1.5°C. Relative risks (RRs) of emergency visits above hot temperature thresholds ranged from 1.02 to 1.30 and those below cold temperature thresholds ranged from 1.01 to 1.05. We also observed increased RRs ranged from 1.02 to 1.65 of emergency visits when temperatures changes on a single day or on successive days.
We found a relationship between temperature and MI occurrence during both heat and cold exposure at the threshold temperature. Diurnal temperature or temperature change on successive days also increased MI risk.

Long-term changes in the heat–mortality relationship according to heterogeneous regional climate: a time-series study in South Korea

ObjectivesSeveral studies identified a heterogeneous impact of heat on mortality in hot and cool regions during a fixed period, whereas less evidence is available for changes in risk over time due to climate change in these regions. We compared changes in risk during periods without (1996–2000) and with (2008–2012) heatwave warning forecasts in regions of South Korea with different climates.MethodsStudy areas were categorised into 3 clusters based on the spatial clustering of cooling degree days in the period 1993–2012: hottest cluster (cluster H), moderate cluster (cluster M) and cool cluster (cluster C). The risk was estimated according to increases in the daily all-cause, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality per 1°C change in daily temperature above the threshold, using a generalised additive model.ResultsThe risk of all types of mortality increased in cluster H in 2008–2012, compared with 1996–2000, whereas the risks in all-combined regions and cooler clusters decreased. Temporal increases in mortality risk were larger for some vulnerable subgroups, including younger adults (<75 years), those with a lower education and blue-collar workers, in cluster H as well as all-combined regions. Different patterns of risk change among clusters might be attributable to large increases in heatwave frequency or duration during study periods and the degree of urbanisation in cluster H.ConclusionsPeople living in hotter regions or with a lower socioeconomic status are at higher risk following an increasing trend of heat-related mortality risks. Continuous efforts are needed to understand factors which affect changes in heat-related mortality risks.

Background
Dust storms affect human health by impairing visibility and promoting interactions with microscopic organisms, such as bacteria and fungi. Although ST-elevation MI (STEMI) and non-ST-elevation MI (NSTEMI) differ mechanistically, few studies have investigated the incidence of cardiovascular diseases according to infarction type; these studies have yielded inconsistent findings. This study aimed to examine whether PM size (< 2.5 μm (PM
2.5
) and < 10 μm (PM
10
)) modifies the effect of Asian dust on acute myocardial infarction (AMI), with separate analyses for STEMI and NSTEMI.
Methods
MI-related data from 9934 emergency visits were collected from the Korea AMI Registry from 2005 to 2017. Asian dust events were defined as days with visibility of ≤10 km. Generalized linear models were used to analyze data with natural cubic splines. To examine potential modifiers, analyses were stratified by age, smoking status, and body mass index (BMI).
Results
No significant associations were observed between Asian dust and AMI. By adjusting for different lag structures, a significant effect was exclusively observed in STEMI. For moving average lags, the largest value at lag 5 (relative risk [RR] 1.083; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.007–1.166) for single and lags 0–7 (RR 1.067; 95% CI: 1.002–1.136) was observed for PM
2.5
; for PM
10
, the largest significant effect was observed at lag 4 (RR 1.075; 95% CI: 1.010–1.144) for single and lags 0–7 (RR 1.067; 95% CI: 1.002–1.136). RRs were significantly higher in < 65-year-olds than in ≥65-year-olds. Additionally, RRs between the BMI < 25 and BMI ≥ 25 groups were not different; statistically significant effects were observed for concentration at lags 0–5 (RR: 1.073; 95% CI: 1.002–1.150) and lags 0–6 (RR: 1.071; 95% CI: 1.001–1.146) in the BMI < 25 group. A negative exposure-response association was observed between daily average visibility-adjusted PM and STEMI and daily average visibility-adjusted PM in < 65-year-olds.
Conclusions
Reducing PM
2.5
and PM
10
emissions, particularly during the days of Asian dust, may be crucial and reduce STEMI and AMI incidence among < 65-year-olds. These results indicate that the Asian dust alarm system needs revision to protect vulnerable populations.

Assessment of an Emergency Medicine System for Radiation Accidents in Korea: A State Survey of the Workers Involved the Medical Response to Radiation Accidents

Radiation emergency medicine systems are operated around the world to provide special care for the injured that require immediate medical attention in accidents. The objective of this survey was to evaluate people’s perception of those who design the emergency medical plan for radiation accidents and those who supervise it in Korea. A questionnaire survey was conducted on the people involved in a regulatory system for medical response in a radiation emergency. Of 150 survey recipients, 133 (88.7%) completed the survey, including 92 workers and 41 inspectors. The respondents expressed the view that the national emergency medical plan is prepared above the average level using a Likert-style scale of 1 to 5 (mean = 3.55, SD = 0.74). Interestingly, using the Mann–Whitney U test, it could be shown that inspectors evaluated the emergency medical system for radiation accidents more strictly in all of the questions than the licensee workers, especially on radiation medical emergency preparedness (p = 0.004) and the governmental regulatory policy for radiation safety (p = 0.007). For a more efficient system of radiation emergency medicine, licensee workers prioritized the workforce, whereas inspectors favored laws and regulations for safety. The survey results show different perspectives between inspectors and licensee workers, which stem from the actual properties of each occupational role in the regulatory system for radiation medical emergency. These data could be utilized for communication and interaction with relevant people to improve the medical response preparedness against radiation accidents.

Local Sea-Level Rise Caused by Climate Change in the Northwest Pacific Marginal Seas Using Dynamical Downscaling

Global climate models (GCMs) have limited capacity in simulating spatially non-uniform sea-level rise owing to their coarse resolutions and absence of tides in the marginal seas. Here, regional ocean climate models (RCMs) that consider tides were used to address these limitations in the Northwest Pacific marginal seas through dynamical downscaling. Four GCMs that drive the RCMs were selected based on a performance evaluation along the RCM boundaries, and the latter were validated by comparing historical results with observations. High-resolution (1/20°) RCMs were used to project non-uniform changes in the sea-level under intermediate (RCP 4.5) and high-end emissions (RCP 8.5) scenarios from 2006 to 2100. The predicted local sea-level rise was higher in the East/Japan Sea (EJS), where the currents and eddy motions were active. The tidal amplitude changes in response to sea-level rise were significant in the shallow areas of the Yellow Sea (YS). Dynamically downscaled simulations enabled the determination of practical sea-level rise (PSLR), including changes in tidal amplitude and natural variability. Under RCP 8.5 scenario, the maximum PSLR was ∼85 cm in the YS and East China Sea (ECS), and ∼78 cm in the EJS. The contribution of natural sea-level variability changes in the EJS was greater than that in the YS and ECS, whereas changes in the tidal contribution were higher in the YS and ECS. Accordingly, high-resolution RCMs provided spatially different PSLR estimates, indicating the importance of improving model resolution for local sea-level projections in marginal seas.

Persistent Continental Shelf Carbon Sink at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station in the Northern East China Sea

Hourly (2017–2021) to seasonal (2015–2021) inorganic C data were collected at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (32.07°N and 125.10°E) in the northern East China Sea (ECS), located under the influence of the nutrient-rich Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW). An increase in phytoplankton biomass from April to mid-August (the warming period) equalized much of the temperature-driven increase in the surface pCO 2 and thus, made the northern ECS a moderate sink of atmospheric CO 2 . From November to March (the cooling period), a large pCO 2 reduction, driven by a temperature reduction, and a high air–sea CO 2 exchange rate, because of high windspeeds, transformed the basin into a substantial CO 2 sink, yielding an annual net C uptake of 61.7 g C m –2 yr –1 . The effects of biological production and temperature change on seawater pCO 2 (and thus, the net air–sea CO 2 flux) were decoupled each season and acted in concert to increase the net annual CO 2 sink by the region. The present study provided the observational and mechanistic lines of evidence for confirming “continental shelf C pump”—a mechanism in the shallow waters of the continental shelves that accumulate a significant amount of C ( via reinforced cooling and promoted biological C uptake) that is transported from the basin surface waters to the interior of the adjacent deep ocean. In the future, an increasing input of anthropogenic nutrients into the northern ECS is likely to make the region a stronger CO 2 sink.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exposure to dim light at night (dLAN) when sleeping on functional brain activation during a working-memory tasks. We conducted the brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis on 20 healthy male subjects. All participants slept in a polysomnography laboratory without light exposure on the first and second nights and under a dim-light condition of either 5 or 10 lux on the third night. The fMRI scanning was conducted during
n
-back tasks after second and third nights. Statistical parametric maps revealed less activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) after exposure to 10-lux light. The brain activity in the right and left IFG areas decreased more during the 2-back task than during the 1- or 0-back task in the 10-lux group. The exposure to 5-lux light had no significant effect on brain activities. The exposure to dLAN might influence the brain function which is related to the cognition.
