Reproductive performance and sex ratio adjustment of the wild boar (Sus scrofa) in South Korea

The wild boar (
Sus scrofa
), a polygynous species, rapidly expanded its geographical range and increased its population size in South Korea following the extinction of large carnivores and changes to rural environments. Understanding wild boar reproductive traits and strategies is essential for their effective management; however, studies in this area are lacking. Using samples collected from hunting bags, the relationships between 1) litter size and female weight and 2) fetal sex ratio and female body condition were examined to understand wild boar life-history strategies. Wild boars showed a seasonal breeding pattern that maximized reproduction. Litter size (mean = 5.7 ± 1.7) was correlated with female weight, whereas fetal sex ratio was not explained by female body condition. However, the heaviest ranked fetuses within the litters were male-biased. Wild boars aged three years or less accounted for 90% of the total population, and sexual dimorphism developed from two years of age. Considering that their reproductive strategy is more effective (i.e., early gestation and large litter size) than that of other polygynous species, the Trivers–Willard model was not supported for the wild boars in this study. Instead, females adjusted the sex of the heaviest fetus in the litter to maximize lifetime reproductive success.

The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is the single known regulatory mediator of hormonal 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] in higher vertebrates. It acts in the nucleus of vitamin D target cells to regulate the expression of genes whose products control diverse, cell type-specific biological functions that include mineral homeostasis. In this Review we describe progress that has been made in defining new cellular sites of action of this receptor, the mechanisms through which this mediator controls the expression of genes, the biology that ensues, and the translational impact of this receptor on human health and disease. We conclude with a brief discussion of what comes next in understanding vitamin D biology and the mechanisms that underlie its actions.

Parasitic diseases have serious health, social, and economic impacts, especially in the tropical regions of the world. Diseases caused by protozoan parasites are responsible for considerable mortality and morbidity, affecting more than 500 million people worldwide. Globally, the burden of protozoan diseases is increasing and is been exacerbated because of a lack of effective medication due to the drug resistance and toxicity of current antiprotozoal agents. These limitations have prompted many researchers to search for new drugs against protozoan parasites. In this review, we have compiled the latest information (2012–2017) on the structures and pharmacological activities of newly developed organic compounds against five major protozoan diseases, giardiasis, leishmaniasis, malaria, trichomoniasis, and trypanosomiasis, with the aim of showing recent advances in the discovery of new antiprotozoal drugs.

Geniposide Mitigates Insulin Resistance and Hepatic Fibrosis via Insulin Signaling Pathway

Insulin resistance is a key driver of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), progressing to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This study investigated the effects of geniposide (GP) on insulin sensitivity and hepatic fibrosis in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced NASH model. C57BL/6 mice were fed an HFD for five weeks and subsequently divided into normal chow (NC), HFD, HFD with GP 50 mg/kg (GP50), and HFD with GP 100 mg/kg (GP100) groups. The treatments were administered orally for 12 weeks. GP treatment significantly reduced body weight as well as epididymal fat and liver weights, while no differences were observed in food intake. Improvements in glucose and lipid metabolism were observed in oral glucose tolerance tests, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and blood lipid profiles. Histological analyses revealed that GP suppressed adipocyte hypertrophy and hepatic lipid accumulation and hepatic fibrosis. To further elucidate molecular mechanisms of GP, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis was conducted in the liver tissue. GP downregulated expression of inflammatory markers, including F4/80, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-6. GP treatment modulated genes involved in insulin signaling including Janus kinase 2 (JAK2), insulin receptor (INSR), insulin receptor substrate 2 (IRS-2), and protein kinase B (AKT1) gene expression levels. This suggests GP suppresses inflammation and mitigates insulin resistance by activating the INSR–IRS2–Akt pathway. Additionally, GP enhanced adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) expression, suggesting its potential role in improving glucose and lipid metabolism. In conclusion, GP improves insulin resistance, inflammation, and hepatic fibrosis, highlighting its therapeutic potential for NASH and related metabolic disorders.

Diet of the wild boar ( Sus scrofa ): implications for management in forest-agricultural and urban environments in South Korea

The wild boar is one of the most widely distributed in the world. In South Korea, the wild boar population has rapidly increased and their habitat use has expanded from forests to urban environments. This expansion has led to increased conflicts with humans, such as the severe damaging of crops and the attacking of people in urban areas. We assessed the stomach contents of wild boar killed by hunters in two different environments in Geochang and Seoul, South Korea, from 2012 to 2017. We compared the feeding habits between sites and between seasons and explored the relationship between the number of earthworms and the main diet. The diet of wild boars inhabiting the two environments were found to differ and vary seasonally. Wild boar in Geochang preferred crops, when available, to natural food resources. Although wild boar in Seoul also preferred crops, they had a higher composition of natural food in their diets because of a low availability of crops. The preference of crops and discarded food waste in urban areas is expected to have accelerated the appearance of wild boar in urban areas. The consumption of earthworms did not differ between the two study sites, but it did differ seasonally due to availability. The number of earthworms was significantly negatively correlated with crop availability in both sites. Effective management plans that involve targeted hunting by baiting with food in Seoul and direct hunting in the fall in Geochang should be implemented to resolve the human–wild boar conflicts in these areas.

Background/Objectives: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent urological disorder in aging men, characterized by the enlargement of prostate epithelial and stromal cells, which leads to lower urinary tract symptoms. Paeonol, a bioactive compound derived from Moutan Cortex (Paeonia suffruticosa), exhibits multiple pharmacological properties; however, its therapeutic potential in BPH remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms of paeonol in BPH treatment using network pharmacology and in vivo experiments. Methods: Network pharmacology and molecular docking were conducted to identify potential targets of paeonol against BPH. For the in vivo study, testosterone-induced BPH rat models were employed, and efficacy was evaluated through prostate weight assessment, histological examination, and the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis of prostate tissues. Results: In silico analysis revealed key signaling pathways involved in apoptosis, proliferation, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)–protein kinase B (Akt), and inflammation. Paeonol administration significantly reduced prostate weight, volume, and histological hyperplasia in BPH rats. qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated that paeonol may suppress dihydrotestosterone production by inhibiting 5α-reductase 2 (5AR2) and the androgen receptor (AR), while also downregulating local growth factors, alpha serine/threonine-protein kinase (Akt1), nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), and glutathione reductase (GR) expression. Conclusions: These findings provide novel insights into the multitargeted therapeutic potential of paeonol in BPH by inhibiting 5AR and AR and suppressing proliferation via NF-κB and Akt pathway modulation.

An Overview of Systematic Reviews: Complementary Therapies for Cancer Patients

Introduction: This article critically examines the systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analysis (MA) of complementary therapies for cancer patients to appraise the evidence level, and offers suggestions for future research and practice. Methods: The Cochrane Library and MEDLINE were searched from their inception to January 2018, to identify SR and MA of complementary therapies available for cancer patients. Final selected SR and MA were methodologically evaluated for their quality by applying the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR2) instrument. Data extraction and risk of quality assessments were performed by 2 independent reviewers. Results: A total of 104 studies were included in the analysis. The majority of the individual clinical trials included in the SR and MA were performed in China (48%) and the United States (26.9%). Breast cancer was the most studied cancer type (25%), and acupuncture was the most studied intervention (21%). Side effects of cancer such as pain, depression, and fatigue were effectively managed with complementary therapies. The methodologically problematic items included not listing the excluded studies and lack of protocol or protocol registration. Conclusions: With increasing interest in research, complementary therapies appear to be beneficial in reducing side effects and raising the quality of life of cancer patients. Complementary therapies have generally been studied for all cancers, with acupuncture being the most researched, regardless of the cancer type. Since AMSTAR2 is a stricter assessment tool than before, future studies need to consider the risk of methodological bias with caution and discuss appropriate overall quality assessment tools.

Salvia miltiorrhiza and Its Compounds as Complementary Therapy for Dyslipidemia: A Meta-Analysis of Clinical Efficacy and In Silico Mechanistic Insights

Background/Objectives: Dyslipidemia is a significant risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), a leading cause of death worldwide. Salvia miltiorrhiza Burge is widely used in East Asia for cardiovascular health, showing potential benefits in lowering cholesterol and reducing inflammation. Methods: This study systematically reviewed and conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the clinical effectiveness of Salvia miltiorrhiza in treating dyslipidemia. Moreover, network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses were performed to explore the mechanisms underlying the effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza. Results: The meta-analysis revealed that when Salvia miltiorrhiza is combined with statin therapy, it significantly enhances lipid profiles, including reductions in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides and improvements in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), compared to statin therapy alone. The in silico analyses indicated that Salvia miltiorrhiza may influence key biological pathways, such as the PI3K/Akt, JAK/STAT, and HMGCR pathways, which are involved in inflammation, lipid metabolism, and the development of atherosclerosis. Conclusions: Salvia miltiorrhiza shows potential as a complementary therapy for dyslipidemia, offering additional lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Temporal Patterns and Hotspot Identification of Vehicle Collisions with the Roe Deer (Capreolus pygargus) on Jeju Island, South Korea

Wildlife–vehicle collisions (WVCs) are increasing worldwide, posing a threat to both humans and wildlife in terms of human injury and loss of wildlife. Understanding the temporal and spatial non-randomness of WVCs is an essential process for effective WVC management. Roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) is the most prevalent wildlife species in WVCs on Jeju Island, South Korea. This study analyzed individual temporal patterns and spatial hotspots (clusters) based on roe deer–vehicle collisions (RDVC) on Jeju Island from 2014 to 2017. RDVCs occur frequently from July to October, and RDVCs are higher in male deer than with females in all seasons, except in winter. The clusters in the high-risk periods were more regionally distributed compared to the clusters in the low-risk periods. Regardless of the period, some road sections have been identified as crucial clusters that should be given priority for road fencing to mitigate human-deer conflicts. Our findings could also provide road administrators with practical options for management such as temporarily imposing vehicle speed limits and installing signboards.
