Greenhouses are important for stable food production, but require large amounts of energy to maintain their microclimate in regions with harsh climates. This study assessed the internal thermal insulation performance of thermal curtains in double-layered plastic greenhouses in Korea in winter using cover surface temperature changes and heat transfer coefficients (U values). The thermal curtain performance increased as the temperatures of the inner cover surface increased and the outer cover surface decreased. The outer cover surface temperature with thermal curtains was almost uniformly 1.9 °C lower than that without thermal curtains, whereas the inner cover surface temperature was higher, demonstrating the warming effect of thermal curtain use. Under a constant indoor and outdoor air temperature difference, the daily average heating energy consumption was directly proportional to the U value. The U values were 2.76 W m−2 °C−1 with thermal curtains and 3.85 W m−2 °C−1 without thermal curtains. In double-layered plastic greenhouses that were covered with 0.1-mm-thick polyethylene, incorporating thermal curtains at night resulted in energy savings of about 28.7%, which was related to the decrease in U values. Installing and using thermal curtains at night in winter is a highly economical method for heating savings. These results can be used to promote energy savings in greenhouses in harsh climates.

This study comprehensively analyzed the heat loss and total heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of a single-span experimental plastic greenhouse covered with a double layer of 0.1 mm thick polyethylene. The air temperature and heat flux (W m−2) of the greenhouse components were measured from 18:00 to 06:00, and the energy balance equations under steady-state conditions were determined. The heat flux and U-value of the roof, sides, front and rear, and floor of the greenhouse were determined and compared. The results showed that these values for the roof play an important role in determining the heat load in the greenhouse, and that the average heat transfer through the floor is very small. The average U-value of the greenhouse cover is a comprehensive value which takes the U-values of the roof, sides, and front and rear into account through the use of an area–weighted average method. Finally, an average U-value of 3.69 W m−2 °C −1 was obtained through the analysis of the variations in the U-value, as it is related to the difference in air temperature between the interior and exterior of the greenhouse, as well as to the outdoor wind speed. The relationships between the average U-value and those of the roof, sides, and front and rear of the experimental greenhouse were modeled, and were shown to have a highly linear relationship.

Understanding science and technology information users through transaction log analysis
2013
Purpose - This study seeks to provide insight into user interaction with a web-based information system of science and technology, as extending the large-scale research of search queries. Ultimately, this study aims to gain knowledge of user behavior in order to improve the IR system for the users.Design methodology approach - The paper quantitatively analyzed queries submitted to a web-based IR system in science and technology. The data were collected in a full one-year period beginning on Friday, 1 January 2010 through on Friday, 31 December 2010. More than 7,240,000 queries and 20,700,000 records were quantitatively analyzed in this period for this study.Findings - In general, queries themselves tend to be short and simple (1.4 terms) for the web-based IR system in science and technology. This indicates that users tend to invest a minimum of effort (cognitive and physical) and time in structuring their information needs to look for information on the system. However, user sessions on the IR system are longer (8.2 queries) than on web search engines. Most search sessions last less than 30 minutes with a mean of 24 minutes and 15 seconds, a minimum of one second, a maximum of ten hours, and a mode of ten seconds. Regarding the topic trends in science and technology, Life Science ranked first in 2010. Environment ranked first and Life Science, 11th in 2009.Originality value - The authors have presented a study which has characterized users' searching behaviors of an information system in science and technology over a full one-year period, and suggested improvement issues in user interface and search functionality for the system. From this recent exploratory analysis, the authors believe that the user behavioral characteristics are valuable in monitoring the patterns and trends in use of an information system in the field of science and technology.

The aerodynamic performance of clap-and-fling mechanism in a KU-Beetle—a tailless two-winged flapping-wing micro air vehicle—was investigated for various horizontal free-stream inflows. Three inflow speeds of 0 (hovering), 2.52 m/s and 5.04 m/s corresponding to advance ratios of 0, 0.5 and 1 were considered. The forces and moments for two wing distances of 16 mm (in which the clap-and-fling effect was strong) and 40 mm (in which the clap-and-fling effect was diminished) were computed using commercial software of ANSYS-Fluent 16.2. When the advance ratio increased from 0 to 0.5 and 1, the lift enhancement due to clap in the down-stroke reversal increased from 1.1% to 1.7% and 1.9%, while that in the up-stroke reversal decreased from 2.1% to −0.5% and 1.1%. Thus, in terms of lift enhancement due to clap, the free-stream inflow was more favorable in the down stroke than the up stroke. For all investigated inflow speeds, the clap-and-fling effect augmented the lift and power consumption but reduced the lift-to-power ratio. The total contributions of the fling phases to the enhancements in lift, torque, and power consumption were more than twice those of the clap phases. For the advance ratio from 0 to 0.5 and 1, the enhancement in average lift slightly decreased from 9.9% to 9.4% and 9.1%, respectively, and the augmentation in average power consumption decreased from 12.3% to 10.5% and 9.7%. Meanwhile, the reduction in the average lift-to-power ratio decreased from 2.1% to 1.1% and 0.6%, implying that in terms of aerodynamic efficiency, the free-stream inflow benefits the clap-and-fling effect in the KU-Beetle.

A new hybrid terrain coverage method for underwater robotic exploration
2014
It is well known that it is difficult to explore underwater terrains using an autonomous underwater vehicle due to the varieties and complexities of underwater terrain elements. Since conventional underwater terrain coverage techniques are usually based on the assumption that the underwater surface is planar, they generate an unnecessary exploration path especially on steep sloped surfaces of ocean basins. This paper proposes a new type of coverage technique, the hybrid terrain coverage framework (HTCF), which considers various surface conditions in three-dimensional environments and generates an efficient exploration path for all environments. The HTCF incorporates a planar terrain coverage algorithm, a spiral path terrain coverage algorithm, and a hybrid decision module to recognize and select the most suitable technique depending on the sloped surface variations. Simulation results show that the proposed HTCF is more efficient than the conventional terrain coverage algorithm in terms of the energy consumption of the underwater vehicle.

Persistent Charging System for Crazyflie Platform
2022
Nowadays, quadcopters are used widely in different applications, but their flight time is limited during operation. In this paper, a precision landing method based on a Kalman filter is proposed for an autonomous indoor persistent drone system that aims to increase the flight time of quadcopters. First, a local positioning system is used for tracking performance. Second, instead of using this local positioning system during the landing phase, a multi-ranger sensor is proposed to increase the accuracy of horizontal errors. Next, based on the relative position provided by the multi-ranger sensor, a Kalman filter technique is applied to estimate the relative velocity of the system, which is then applied to control the position of the quadcopter during the landing phase. Finally, a charging state machine law is proposed to charge the battery of three quadcopters sequentially. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed concept based on a multi-ranger sensor can enhance the accuracy of the landing phase in comparison with the conventional method.

An Efficient Path Replanning Technique for EST-Based Robot Navigation in Dynamic Environments
2013
Expansive-Spaces Trees (EST) is a single-query sampling-based path planner. When EST is applied to robot navigation in dynamic environments, EST confronts the risk of a collision with dynamic obstacles since it has generated a path without any consideration for dynamic obstacles. This paper proposes an efficient path replanning technique for EST-based robot navigation in dynamic environments. The proposed technique replans a collision-free and efficient path instead of the original EST path which may cause a collision with dynamic obstacles. Besides, the replanned path can be easily merged into the original EST path because it preserves the property of EST. Simulation results in various dynamic environments reveal that the proposed technique can successfully replan a collision-free and efficient path for EST-based navigation.

One-step apexification using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been reported as an alternative treatment modality with more benefits than the use of long-term calcium hydroxide for teeth with open apex. However, orthograde placement of MTA is a challenging procedure in terms of length control. This case series describes the sequence of events following apical extrusion of MTA into the periapical area during a one-step apexification procedure for maxillary central incisor with an infected immature apex. Detailed long-term observation revealed complete resolution of the periapical radiolucent lesion around the extruded MTA. These cases revealed that direct contact with MTA had no negative effects on healing of the periapical tissues. However, intentional MTA overfilling into the periapical lesion is not to be recommended.

A longitudinal study of information needs and search behaviors in science and technology
2016
Purpose
This study aims at a longitudinal understanding of the user–system interactions from the context of science and technology at a query level.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors quantitatively analyzed log data sets culled from more than 24,820,416 queries submitted by users of a national scientific and technical information system, collected in 2008-2011.
Findings
In the fields of science and technology, the user search behaviors and patterns have remained stable. User queries are short and simple. In all, 80 per cent of the queries are made up of one-three terms. The length of query on a scholarly information system in the fields of science and technology is different from that of Web search. The former is longer than the latter. Search topics have shifted fast. “FUEL BATTERY”, “NANO”, “OLED”, “CAR”, “ROBOT” and “SMARTPHONE” were high-ranked queries from 2008 to 2011. It was found that the time to determine whether the users will stay on the site took about 10 seconds on average from the time of visit. If the users viewed the results of a list generated by the search query and took any action, such as detailed view, export or full-text download, most of them stayed more than 10 minutes on average.
Originality/value
Longitudinal user research using a query analysis helps to understand the information needs and behavioral patterns of users on information systems related to a specific field and those based on the Web. It also brings insights into the past, present and future events of a field. In other words, it plays a role as a mirror that reflects the flow of time. In the long run, it will be an historic asset. In the future, user studies using a query analysis need to be carried out from various (e.g. social, cultural or other academic disciplines) long-term perspectives on a continuous basis.
