During the halcyon days of the Abstract Expressionist and Imaginative Realism movements, Frank O'Hara was the laureate of the New York art scene. From his posts as critic for Art News and curator at the Museum of Modern Art, he moved as a mercurial presence through the galleries and the studios of such painters as DeKooning and Larry Rivers, writing monographs about the new masters, encouraging the young, amusing with his talk-and dashing off his poems at odd moments with an insouciance that was legendary.
