ENGAGEMENT: THE SECRET to Sustainable Learning
The reams of data that have become a fixture in most schools are a testament to the truism that anything that can be measured is inherently more valuable than that which is more difficult to quantify. Since it may be problematic to assess the degree to which students are motivated to become independent, to persevere in the face of obstacles, or to delve deeper into a topic of study, these important goals are often given short shrift. [...]one of the most obvious indicators of engagement in the classroom may well be sustainability. [...]extrinsic rewards sometimes can be a deterrent to learning, such as when students read 10 \"easy\" books in exchange for admittance to a pizza party rather than reading two challenging books that might take longer and leave them out of the fun.
