Embedded Feature Selection and Machine Learning Methods for Flash Flood Susceptibility-Mapping in the Mainstream Songhua River Basin, China

Mapping flash flood susceptibility is effective for mitigating the negative impacts of flash floods. However, a variety of conditioning factors have been used to generate susceptibility maps in various studies. In this study, we proposed combining logistic regression (LR) and random forest (RF) models with embedded feature selection (EFS) to filter specific feature sets for the two models and map flash flood susceptibility in the mainstream basin of the Songhua River. According to the EFS results, the optimized feature sets included 32 and 28 features for the LR and RF models, respectively, and the composition of the two optimal feature sets was similar and distinct. Overall, the relevant vegetation cover and river features exhibit relatively high effects overall for flash floods in the study area. The LR and RF models provided accurate and reliable flash flood susceptibility maps (FFSMs). The RF model (accuracy = 0.8834, area under the curve (AUC) = 0.9486) provided a better prediction capacity than the LR model (accuracy = 0.8634, AUC = 0.9277). Flash flood-prone areas are mainly distributed in the south and southwest and areas close to rivers. The results obtained in this study is useful for flash flood prevention and control projects.

Forest succession trajectories after fires in valleys and on slopes in the Greater Khingan Mountains, China

Accurate assessment of postfire vegetation recovery is important for forest management and the conservation of species diversity. Topography is an important factor affecting vegetation recovery but whether species composition varies with different recovery stages and between valleys and slopes is unclear. Using field data and a space-for-time substitution method, we quantified species richness and diversity to obtain the successional trajectories of valleys and slopes. We surveyed the species of 10 burned areas from 1986 to 2010 in the Greater Khingan Mountains in northeastern China, and found that with increasing postfire recovery time, species richness in both valleys and slopes gradually decreased. However, species richness in valleys was relatively higher. Shrubs recovered rapidly in the valleys, and species diversity maximized approximately 11 years after fire. However, it maximized 17–18 years after fire on the slopes. Numerous shade-tolerant species were present in the valleys 11 years after fire but not until after 18 years on slopes. Larch appeared earlier than 11 years after fire and its recovery was slow in the valleys but appeared quickly on slopes and established dominance early. Our study provides some new insights into vegetation succession after fire at local scales. After fire, the vegetation recovery processes differ with topography and it affects the initial rate of recovery and species composition at different successional stages.

Does electroacupuncture benefit mixed urinary incontinence? A systematic review and meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis

Introductin and hypothesisMixed urinary incontinence (MUI) comprises a combination of urgency and stress. The efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture (EA) for the treatment of MUI remain unclear.ObjectiveTo assess the efficacy and safety of EA in treating MUI.MethodsWe searched PubMed, CENTRAL, Embase, Web of Science, four Chinese databases, clinical research registration platforms, grey literature, and the reference lists of the selected studies. Risk of bias and quality were evaluated using the Revman 5.4 and Jadad scores. Meta-analysis was performed using Stata 15.1 software. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was used to assess the stability of the results.ResultsEight randomized controlled trials comprising 847 patients were included. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with antimuscarinic drugs plus pelvic floor muscle training, EA resulted in significantly less pad weight on the 1-h pad test and statistically significantly lower severity scores on the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form. The change in the 72-h incontinence episode frequency difference was not statistically significant, and there was no outcome of overall response rate and quality of life in this meta-analysis. Few adverse events occurred in the EA group. The TSA results suggested that the result of change from baseline in the 1-h pad test was stable and the evidence was conclusive.ConclusionsEA could be a potential treatment option for MUI and is relatively safe. Nevertheless, because of the limitations of this study, our conclusions should be interpreted with caution, and further studies are needed to confirm the comprehensive clinical efficacy and placebo effect of EA.

Electroacupuncture stimulation inhibited astrogliosis and microglia polarisation to alleviate spinal cord injury via Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 signalling pathway

The aberrant activation of the Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) signalling pathway is involved in spinal cord injury (SCI) progression. Electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation is effective in alleviating SCI, but the mechanism is poorly understood.
An SCI model was constructed by cord contusion at T10, and AG490 (a JAK2 inhibitor) served as a positive control in this study. We evaluated the effects of EA on locomotor activity and spinal damage in SCI rats. The effects of EA on astrocytes and microglia and on the JAK2/STAT3 signalling pathway in the cells were investigated.
Behavioural tests showed that hind limb motor function of rats was improved after EA stimulation. The therapeutic effects of EA stimulation in restoring motor function, alleviating injured spinal cords, and inhibiting spinal cord neuronal apoptosis in SCI rats, were similar to those of AG490. Increased STAT3 activation was observed in astrocytes and microglia in the spinal cord of SCI rats, and this was reversed by EA stimulation. EA alleviated astrogliosis and inhibited microglia M1 polarisation in SCI rat spinal cords. In addition, RNA expression levels of pro-inflammatory factors IL-6, CXCL1, and TNF-α in rat spinal cords were suppressed by EA stimulation, while the expression level of the anti-inflammatory factor heme oxygenase 1 was increased. Meanwhile, the expression of p-JAK2, p-STAT3, and JAK2/STAT3 downstream targets SOCS3 and COX-2 in the spinal cord of SCI rats was inhibited by EA stimulation. Interestingly, the observed effects were comparable to those treated with EA.
Our findings demonstrate that EA stimulation ameliorates SCI in rats and exerts an inhibitory effect on the JAK2/STAT3 signalling pathway.

Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Trends and Mechanisms in Different Ecosystems in Northeastern China

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), when used as a proxy for plant photosynthesis, can provide an indication of the photosynthesis rate and has the potential to improve our understanding of carbon exchange mechanisms within an ecosystem. However, the relationships between SIF and vegetation indices (VIs) operating within different ecological contexts and the effect of other environmental factors on SIF remain unclear. This study focused on three ecosystems (cropland, forest, and grassland), with different ecological characteristics, located in Northeast China. These areas provide case studies where numerous relationships can be explored, including the correlations between the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) SIF and MODIS products, meteorological factors, and the differences in the relationships between the three different ecosystems. Some interesting results and conclusions were obtained. First, in different ecosystems, the relationships between SIF and MODIS products show different correlations, whereby the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) has a close relationship with SIF in all the three ecosystems of forest, cropland, and grassland. Second, forest-type ecosystems appear to be sensitive to changes in daily temperature, whereas cropland and grassland areas respond more closely to changes in previous 16-day daily minimum temperature. Compared with forest and cropland areas, grasslands were more sensitive to precipitation (although the R2 value was small). Third, different ecosystems have different mechanisms of photosynthesis. Hence, we suggest that it is better to use SIF in areas exhibiting different ecological characteristics, and different models should be employed while simulating SIF.

Trends and hotspots of acupuncture for allergic rhinitis: A bibliometric analysis from 2002 to 2022

The study aims to investigate and visualize the hotspots of acupuncture for Allergic rhinitis (AR) over the past two decades and pinpoint future trends in this field.
We conducted a systematic search of English-language articles or reviews on acupuncture for AR in the Web of Science Core Collection from 2002 to 2022. Using Citespace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix, we analyzed and visualized the publications, countries, institutions, authors, journals, and keywords from various angles.
The study identified 197 documents, 80 journals, 458 keywords, and 928 authors associated with acupuncture for AR. Although article publication fluctuated over the past 20 years, an overall upward trend emerged, with rapid growth during the second decade. China contributed the most to acupuncture research on AR and had the closest collaborations with the United States and Germany. China Medical University was the most prolific institution, and Benno Brinkhaus was the most productive and influential author. The most published journal was Medicine, while the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology was the most frequently cited journal. The highest frequency keywords included acupuncture, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. Randomized controlled trials and alternative & complementary medicine remained significant research hotspots, while rhinoconjunctivitis is expected to be the emerging focus of future investigations.
acupuncture has experienced robust development for the treatment of allergic rhinitis over the last two decades, with rhinoconjunctivitis and clinical research being the anticipated trends and frontiers of future research.

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Analysis of SWEET Gene Family in Strawberry

The Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporter (SWEET) is a class of bidirectional sugar transporter that is involved in critical physiological processes such as plant growth and development, and its response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Currently, there are few reports on the SWEET gene family in strawberry. In this study, we mined the SWEET gene family members in Fragaria × ananassa ‘Camarosa’ and carefully analyzed their molecular features and expression patterns. The results showed that 77 FanSWEET genes existed in the F. × ananassa ‘Camarosa’ genome, and the phylogenetic analysis classified them into four sub-groups. Analysis of gene structure, conserved structural domains, and conserved motifs showed that FanSWEETs were highly conserved during the evolutionary process. Expression profiling of the 11 FanSWEET genes revealed that three members were highly expressed in strawberry fruits, which were presumed to be involved in sugar transport during strawberry fruit ripening. In addition, based on the exogenous sugar-spraying treatment and quantitative real-time PCR analysis, we found that different members responded to different sugar treatments in different response patterns, and their functions in sugar transport need to be further explored. The present study provides a reference for further analysis of the functions of the SWEET gene in strawberry.

Research hotspots and trend analysis of cell transplantation in traumatic spinal cord injury: a bibliometric and visualized analysis

Background: A traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) can lead to severe nerve damage and disability. Cell transplantation therapy has shown great potential in the reconstruction of damaged spinal cords and promoting functional recovery. However, there is a lack of frontiers and futures analysis in the study of cell transplantation in TSCI. Methods: We used CiteSpace, VOSviewer and biblilometrix R package to perform bibliometric analysis on cell transplantation in TSCI from 2013 to 2023. Bibliometric records were extracted from English articles and reviews from the Web of Science core collection. Results: The bibliometric analysis included 284 papers published in 154 journals by 1,780 authors from 487 institutions in 41 countries and regions. The number of articles published in the past decade has fluctuated slightly, while the number of article citations has steadily increased. Mainland China and the United States are the leading countries and regions in this field, with the National Natural Science Foundation of China being the most funded foundation, and the United States being the country with the most funded articles. The University of Toronto in Canada is a prolific institution. Michael G. Fehlings has published the most articles, and D Michele Basso is the most cited author. Cell transplantation is the most published journal, and the Journal of Neurotrauma is the most cited journal. Cell and tissue engineering and clinical neurology are the basic disciplines in this field, and cutting-edge disciplines include developmental biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and materials science and multidisciplinary. This study also helps scholars understand the current hotspots and future trends in this field. Marrow stromal cells, glial progenitor, and cell therapy are current research hotspots in this field, while nerve regeneration, cell therapy, and the safety of transplantation of transplantation may be potential research directions in the future. Conclusion: Cell transplantation after TSCI is receiving increasing attention. Cell therapy is both the frontier and a possible future trend in TSCI research. In addition, glial progenitor and marrow stromal cells are also current research hotspots. Meanwhile, nerve regeneration and safety of transplantation may be potential research directions. These findings will help further deepen research on cell transplantation for TSCI in scientific work.

Mitochondrial dysfunction in perimenopausal mood disorders: From hormonal shifts to neuroenergetic failure (Review)

Perimenopause represents a key transition from a reproductive to non-reproductive state in women, characterized by physiological and psychological changes. Mood disturbances during this period, such as depression, anxiety and cognitive decline, are increasingly understood as complex neuroendocrine and metabolic disorders. Mitochondrial homeostasis carries out a key role in the pathophysiology of these affective symptoms. Disruptions in mitochondrial biogenesis, mitophagy and calcium regulation contribute to synaptic dysfunction and neuroimmune changes. These mitochondrial alterations interact with inflammatory pathways and hormonal signals, exacerbating neuropsychiatric symptoms. A more comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in menopausal mood disorders unveils potential therapeutic strategies, including mitochondria-targeted antioxidants, hormone replacement therapy, and lifestyle interventions designed to restore mitochondrial integrity and cerebral bioenergetic function.

Background
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a respiratory failure syndrome that can cause many complications, impacting patients’ quality of life. Behavioral and cognitive disorders have attracted increasing attention in patients with ARDS, but its potential mechanisms are still elusive.
Methods
Herein we transferred the faecal microbiota from patients with ARDS caused by community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) to antibiotics-treated recipient male mice to explore the microbiota-gut-brain mechanisms. Behavioral functions of mice were evaluated by the open field test, Morris water maze and Y-maze test. The structure and composition of the gut microbiota were analyzed by using 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. Microglia, astrocyte and neuron in the cortex and hippocampus were examined via immunofluorescent staining.
Results
We found that the major characteristic of the intestinal flora in ARDS/CAP patients was higher abundances of Gram-negative bacteria than normal controls. The gut microbiota derived from ARDS/CAP patients promoted neuroinflammation and behavioral dysfunctions in mice. Mice who underwent fecal transplant from ARDS/CAP patients had increased systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS), systemic inflammation, and increased colonic barrier permeability. This may adversely impact blood barrier permeability and facilitate microglia activation, astrocyte proliferation, and loss of neurons.
Conclusions
Our study proposes the role of the microbiota-gut-brain crosstalk on ARDS/CAP-associated behavioral impairments and suggests the gut microbiota as a potential target for the protection of brain health in ARDS patients in clinical practice.
