Against the backdrop of the global energy transition, offshore wind power has undergone rapid development. As a vital component of offshore wind power infrastructure, dry shrinkage cracking in concrete piles poses a significant threat to the safe and stable operation of offshore wind power systems. However, the fundamental mechanism of concrete pile cracking during dry shrinkage—particularly the coupled effects of moisture diffusion, meso-structural heterogeneity, and stress evolution—remains poorly understood, lacking a unified theoretical framework. This knowledge gap hinders the development of targeted anti-cracking strategies for offshore concrete structures. Hence, investigating the mechanism of dry shrinkage cracking is of substantial importance. This paper employs numerical simulation to explore the patterns and influencing factors of dry shrinkage cracking in concrete piles for offshore wind turbines, aiming to provide theoretical support for enhancing pile performance. A meshless numerical simulation method based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) framework is developed, which generates concrete meso-structures via a specific algorithm, discretizes the moisture diffusion equation, defines dry shrinkage stress terms, and introduces a fracture coefficient to characterize particle failure, enabling the simulation of concrete dry shrinkage cracking processes. Simulation schemes are designed for varying aggregate percentages, aggregate particle sizes, dry shrinkage coefficients, and moisture diffusion coefficients, using a 100 mm-diameter circular concrete model. Qualitative results reveal the following: Increased aggregate percentages lead to more uniform moisture diffusion, with dry shrinkage crack number and length first increasing and then decreasing; larger aggregate particle sizes exacerbate moisture diffusion non-uniformity and intensify dry shrinkage cracking; higher dry shrinkage coefficients correlate with increased crack number and length; elevated moisture diffusion coefficients accelerate surface water loss, with cracking severity first increasing and then decreasing. The proposed SPH-based meshless method effectively simulates dry shrinkage cracking in offshore wind turbine concrete piles, demonstrating the significant impact of different factors on moisture diffusion and cracking patterns. This study offers insights for applying the SPH method in related fields, deepens the understanding of concrete dry shrinkage cracking mechanisms, and provides a theoretical foundation for the design and optimization of offshore wind power concrete piles.

Metabolic Responses and Oxidative Stress Adaptation Mechanisms of the Pituitary Gland in the Tiger Puffer Under Low-Temperature Stress
2025
To explore the induction of low temperature the Tiger Puffer (Takifugu rubripes) In this study, the influence of temperature on the pituitary gland during masculinization was investigated through chronic hypothermia stress experiments. Metabolomics was used to analyze the metabolic regulatory network of the pituitary gland under hypothermia stress. ELISA technology was employed to determine the activity content of oxidative stress-related enzymes in the pituitary gland. Further, TUNEL fluorescence labeling and qPCR were used to detect the apoptosis level of pituitary cells. Finally, to assess the impact of low-temperature stress on muscle tissue, HE staining and qPCR techniques were employed. The results showed that after 45 days of low-temperature stress, the differential metabolites of the pituitary gland were mainly enriched in the amino acid metabolic signaling pathway, and the contents of amino acids such as GSH and its synthetic precursors in the pituitary tissue changed significantly. The contents of oxidative stress indicators such as ROS and MDA all showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The qPCR results of TUNEL fluorescence labeling and apoptosis-related genes were consistent, indicating that the apoptotic level of pituitary cells first increased and then decreased with the stress process. Histological analysis revealed that low temperature led to muscle cell atrophy and increased interstitial space in muscle tissue. The expression changes in genes related to muscle development further confirmed that low temperature significantly inhibited muscle growth and development. Therefore, this study speculates that after being subjected to chronic low-temperature stress, the pituitary gland of the red-finned Oriental pufferfish can alleviate the oxidative stress response of the body by strengthening the amino acid metabolic pathway, and the fish body has shown a physiological trend of gradually adapting to low-temperature stress, but the growth and development of muscles are still significantly inhibited. The results of this study can provide theoretical support for understanding the physiological adaptation mechanism of the red-finned Oriental pufferfish to low-temperature stress and lay a foundation for subsequent in-depth exploration of the pituitary response mechanism to low temperatures.

The Observation of Meiotic Union Behavior of Gametophytes Provides a New Basis for Ploidy of Carassius auratus gibelio
2025
Our study investigates the karyotype of a vital polyploid fish, Carassius auratus gibelio. We found 150 chromosomes with 6 nucleolar organizer regions, suggesting complex chromosomal interactions. Male and female C. gibelio show different chromosome pairings, indicating asynchronous evolution. The formation of two trivalents or two bivalents and two univalents from six NOR bearing chromosomes in male C. gibelio is considered evidence of being in the process of rediploidization. The presence of only univalents and bivalents in the oocytes of female C. gibelio indicates that their cytogenetics are more stable, suggesting that they have completed rediploidization. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and evolutionary outcomes of this species’ genome. They provide relevant insights for further exploration of the reproductive modes of polyploid organisms and breeding strategies.

Population mobility change for controlling the transmission of COVID-19: mobile phone data analysis in nine cities of China
2023
Mobility restriction measures were the main tools to control the spread of COVID-19, but the extent to which the mobility has decreased remained unsure. We investigated the change in local population mobility and its correlation with COVID-19 infections, using 1185 billion aggregated mobile phone data records in nine main cities in China from 10 January to 24 February 2020. The mobility fell by as much as 79.57% compared to the normal days in 2020 and by 58.13% compared to the same lunar period in 2019. The daily incidence of COVID-19 was significantly correlated with local daily mobility (R
2
= 0.77, P < 0.001). The instantaneous reproduction number R(t) declined by 3% when mobility was reduced by 10% in the GLM analysis (P < 0.05). Our study indicated that the decreased mobility level, driven by a mixture effect of holiday and public health interventions, could substantially reduce the transmission of COVID-19 to a low level. Our study could provide evidence of mobility restriction to control local transmission for other places facing COVID-19 outbreaks or potential next waves.

A Novel Predictive Model of Detrusor Overactivity Based on Clinical Symptoms and Non-invasive Test Parameters in Female Patients with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms
2024
Introduction and Hypothesis
This study was aimed at investigating non-invasive indicators correlated with detrusor overactivity (DO) and at developing a prediction model for DO by reviewing clinical and urodynamic data of female patients.
Methods
We retrospectively enrolled 1,084 female patients who underwent a urodynamic study (UDS) at Tongji Hospital between September 2011 and April 2021. Associated factors and the independent prediction factors of DO were demonstrated by univariate and multivariate analysis. A non-invasive prediction model of DO was developed and validated by applying these data.
Results
A total of 194 patients (17.9%) were classified as having DO. A logistic regression of a multivariate nature showed that DO risk factors were independent of age, nocturia, urgency, urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), and the lack of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The DO prediction model had good performance, with an area under the curve of 0.880 (95% CI 0.826–0.933), which was verified by urodynamic data of patients in Tongji Hospital to be 0.818 (95% CI 0.783–0.853). An outstanding correspondence between the anticipated probability and the observed frequency was revealed by the calibration curve. Decision curve analysis demonstrated that clinical net benefit can be obtained by applying the DO prediction model when the DO risk probability was between 8 and 97%.
Conclusions
A non-invasive prediction model of DO was developed and validated using clinical and urodynamic data. Five independent factors associated with DO were identified: age, nocturia, urgency, UUI, and SUI. This prediction model can contribute to assessing the risk of female DO without the need for invasive urodynamic studies.

Influences of Pre-Existing Fissure Angles and Bridge Angles on Concrete Tensile Failure Characteristics: Insights from Meshless Numerical Simulations
2024
The existence of cracks is a key factor affecting the strength of concrete. However, traditional numerical methods still have some limitations in the simulation of crack growth in fissured concrete structures. Based on this background, the numerical treatment method of particle failure in smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is proposed, and the generation method for concrete meso-structures under the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) framework is developed. The concrete meso-models under different pre-existing micro-fissure inclinations and bridge angles (the inner tip line of the double pre-existing micro-fissure is defined as a bridge, and the angle between the bridge and the horizontal direction is defined as the bridge angle) were established, and numerical simulations of the crack propagation processes of concrete structures under tensile stress were carried out. The main findings were as follows: The concrete meso-structures and the pre-existing micro-fissures all have great impacts on the final failure modes of concrete. The stress–strain curve of the concrete model presents four typical stages. Finally, the crack initiation and propagation mechanisms of fissured concrete are discussed, and the application of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) in crack simulations of fissured concrete is prospected.

Experimental and Meshless Numerical Simulations on the Crack Propagation of Semi-Circular Bending Specimens Containing X-Shaped Fissures Under Three-Point Bending
2024
Cracks in rock and concrete have a great adverse effect on the stability of engineering structures; however, there are few studies on X-shaped fissures which widely exist in rock and concrete structures. Based on this background, three-point bending fracture tests of SCB specimens containing X-shaped fissures are carried out. The momentum equations in the SPH method are improved, and the crack propagations of SCB specimens under three-point bending are simulated. The results show that cracks grow simply along the vertical direction in the sample with no X-shaped fissures, and the existence of an X-shaped fissure changes the crack growth path and final failure modes of the SCB samples. The crack propagation simulation results are consistent with the experimental results, which verifies the rationality of the improved SPH method. The load–displacement curves mainly present three typical stages: the initial compaction stage, linear elastic deformation stage, and failure stage. The peak load decreases first then increases with an increase in eccentricity. With an increase in X-shaped fissure length and decrease in X-shaped fissure angle, the peak load decreases. The damage counts remain at 0 at the initial loading stage, corresponding to the initial compaction stage and the linear elastic deformation stage, and increase sharply at the later loading stage, corresponding to the failure stage, which is consistent with the experimental results. The influence mechanisms of X-shaped fissures on the crack propagation paths are discussed; the existence of different X-shaped fissure morphologies aggravate the tensile stress concentration at specific positions, leading to different crack propagation modes in the experiments. The research results can provide a certain reference for understanding the failure mechanisms of engineering structures containing X-shaped fissures and promote the applications of the SPH method into the simulations of cross-fissure crack propagations.

Hydroxyl radical (OH) is a key oxidant that triggers atmospheric oxidation chemistry in both gas and aqueous phases. The current understanding of its aqueous sources is mainly based on known bulk (photo)chemical processes, uptake from gaseous OH, or related to interfacial O₃ and NO₃ radical-driven chemistry. Here, we present experimental evidence that OH radicals are spontaneously produced at the air—water interface of aqueous droplets in the dark and the absence of known precursors, possibly due to the strong electric field that forms at such interfaces. The measured OH production rates in atmospherically relevant droplets are comparable to or significantly higher than those from known aqueous bulk sources, especially in the dark. As aqueous droplets are ubiquitous in the troposphere, this interfacial source of OH radicals should significantly impact atmospheric multiphase oxidation chemistry, with substantial implications on air quality, climate, and health.

Bioinspired artificial spider silk photocatalyst for the high-efficiency capture and inactivation of bacteria aerosols
2023
Bioaerosol can cause the spread of disease, and therefore, capture and inactivation of bioaerosols is desirable. However, filtration systems can easily become blocked, and are often unable to inactivate the bioaerosol once it is captured. Herein, we reported a bioinspired artificial spider silk (ASS) photocatalyst, consisting of a periodic spindle structure of TiO
2
on nylon fiber that can efficiently capture and concentrate airborne bacteria, followed by photocatalytic inactivation in situ, without a power-supply exhaust system. The ASS photocatalyst exhibits a higher capture capacity than the nylon fiber substrate and a photocatalytic inactivation efficiency of 99.99% obtained under 4 h irradiation. We found that the capture capacity of the ASS photocatalyst can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of hydrophilicity, Laplace pressure differences caused by the size of the spindle knots and surface energy gradients induced by surface roughness. The bacteria captured by the ASS photocatalyst are inactivated by photocatalysis within droplets or at the air/photocatalyst interfaces. This strategy paves the way for constructing materials for bioaerosol purification.
Bioaerosol can cause the spread of disease, but current removal systems are easily blocked and often cannot deactivate the bioaerosol. Here, the authors report a method for bioaerosol removal and deactivation using a bioinspired photocatalyst capable of capturing airborne bacteria.

Metabolic engineering of methylotrophic Pichia pastoris for the production of β-alanine
2021
β-Alanine (3-aminopropionic acid) is the only naturally occurring β-amino acid and an important precursor for the synthesis of a variety of nitrogen-containing chemicals. Fermentative production of β-alanine from renewable feedstocks such as glucose has attracted significant interest in recent years. Methanol has become an emerging and promising renewable feedstock for biomanufacturing as an alternative to glucose. In this work, we demonstrated the feasibility of β-alanine production from methanol using Pichia pastoris (Komagataella phaffii) as a methylotrophic cell factory. L-Aspartate-α-decarboxylases (ADCs) from different sources were screened and expressed in P. pastoris, followed by the optimization of aspartate decarboxylation by increasing the ADC copy number and C4 precursor supply via the overexpression of aspartate dehydrogenase. The production potential of the best strain was further evaluated in a 1-L fermenter, and a β-alanine titer of 5.6 g/L was obtained. To our best knowledge, this is the highest metabolite production titer ever reached in P. pastoris using methanol as the substrate.Graphic abstract
