Model-Free Feature Screening for Ultrahigh-Dimensional Data
With the recent explosion of scientific data of unprecedented size and complexity, feature ranking and screening are playing an increasingly important role in many scientific studies. In this article, we propose a novel feature screening procedure under a unified model framework, which covers a wide variety of commonly used parametric and semiparametric models. The new method does not require imposing a specific model structure on regression functions, and thus is particularly appealing to ultrahigh-dimensional regressions, where there are a huge number of candidate predictors but little information about the actual model forms. We demonstrate that, with the number of predictors growing at an exponential rate of the sample size, the proposed procedure possesses consistency in ranking, which is both useful in its own right and can lead to consistency in selection. The new procedure is computationally efficient and simple, and exhibits a competent empirical performance in our intensive simulations and real data analysis.
Rational design of isostructural 2D porphyrin-based covalent organic frameworks for tunable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution
Covalent organic frameworks have recently gained increasing attention in photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water. However, their structure-property-activity relationship, which should be beneficial for the structural design, is still far-away explored. Herein, we report the designed synthesis of four isostructural porphyrinic two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (MPor-DETH-COF, M = H 2 , Co, Ni, Zn) and their photocatalytic activity in hydrogen generation. Our results clearly show that all four covalent organic frameworks adopt AA stacking structures, with high crystallinity and large surface area. Interestingly, the incorporation of different transition metals into the porphyrin rings can rationally tune the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of corresponding covalent organic frameworks, with the order of CoPor-DETH-COF < H 2 Por-DETH-COF < NiPor-DETH-COF < ZnPor-DETH-COF. Based on the detailed experiments and calculations, this tunable performance can be mainly explained by their tailored charge-carrier dynamics via molecular engineering. This study not only represents a simple and effective way for efficient tuning of the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activities of covalent organic frameworks at molecular level, but also provides valuable insight on the structure design of covalent organic frameworks for better photocatalysis. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) present well-defined materials for constructing structure-property-activity relationships. Herein, authors explore isostructural porphyrinic two-dimensional COFs with tunable of photocatalytic H 2 production rates arising from tailored charge-carrier dynamics.

THz medical imaging: from in vitro to in vivo
Terahertz (THz) radiation has attracted considerable attention in medical imaging owing to its nonionizing and spectral fingerprinting characteristics. To date, most studies have focused on in vitro and ex vivo objects with water-removing pretreatment because the water in vivo excessively absorbs the THz waves, which causes deterioration of the image quality. In this review, we discuss how THz medical imaging can be used for a living body. The development of imaging contrast agents has been particularly useful to this end. In addition, we also introduce progress in novel THz imaging methods that could be more suitable for in vivo applications. Based on our discussions, we chart a developmental roadmap to take THz medical imaging from in vitro to in vivo. Terahertz (THz) medical imaging has been widely explored in vitro and in vivo, and has demonstrated the potential to be a unique tool to complement existing medical imaging methods.A fundamental limitation for THz medical imaging in vivo is the strong THz absorption by water. Some smart nanoparticles have been proposed to work as imaging contrast agents, which suggest a way to overcome the deteriorated THz imaging contrast in a living body.The recent development of novel THz imaging methods should promote in vivo applications, such as THz holographic imaging and near-field imaging.

Negative association of C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte index (CALLY index) with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in patients with cancer: results from NHANES 1999–2018
Background The CALLY index, which is derived from C-reactive protein (CRP) content, serum albumin level, and total lymphocyte count, reflects the immune, nutritional, and inflammatory status of the body. Lack of sufficient evidence on the correlation between the CALLY index and the prognosis of cancer patients with various cancer forms. This study seeks to elucidate the association between the CALLY index and mortality from all causes as well as specific causes in cancer patients within a U.S. population. Methods This investigation encompassed 3511 cancer-afflicted adults from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys (NHANES) spanning 1999 to 2018. The CALLY index was measured at baseline only. The relationship between the CALLY index and mortality from both all causes and cancer specifically was examined using Cox proportional hazards models. Additionally, restricted cubic spline, piecewise linear regression, and various subgroup and sensitivity analyses were employed. Results Over a median follow-up of 103 months, 1,355 deaths occurred, and the incidence of all-cause mortality for these participants was 38.34%. Our findings indicate that an elevated CALLY index correlates with a diminished risk of all-cause mortality. Upon applying a natural logarithmic transformation to the CALLY index, the comprehensively adjusted model revealed that each one-unit increment in ln CALLY corresponded to a 18% decrease in all-cause mortality risk among cancer patients (HR = 0.82, 95% CI:0.79–0.86). Analyses of mortality due to cardiac and cancer-related causes yielded consistent results, which were robust across various subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Conclusion The CALLY index demonstrated a linear and negative association with all-cause mortality, as well as mortality caused by cancer and cardiac conditions, highlighting its significant prognostic value in patients with oncological conditions.
Associations between Chinese college students’ anxiety and depression: A chain mediation analysis
Anxiety and depression are great public health concerns among college students. The purpose of this study was to explore whether sleep quality and quality of life (QoL) play mediating roles in anxiety and depression among Chinese college students. A total of 2757 college students (mean age = 19.07; SD = 1.14) completed the questionnaires, including a brief demographic survey. The 2-item General Anxiety Disorder (GAD-2) and the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) were used to assess the symptoms of anxiety and depression, respectively. And the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) were used to evaluate college students' sleep quality and QoL, respectively. Mediation analyses were conducted by using PROCESS macro in the SPSS software. Anxiety had both direct and indirect effects on depression. Sleep quality and QoL were not only independent mediators in the relationship between anxiety and depression but also chain mediators. The results of the current study highlight the crucial role of early intervention for depression with a focus on college students with anxiety, more especially, on those with poorer sleep quality and lower QoL.
