Rising Tides or Rising Stars?: Dynamics of Shared Attention on Twitter during Media Events

\"Media events\" generate conditions of shared attention as many users simultaneously tune in with the dual screens of broadcast and social media to view and participate. We examine how collective patterns of user behavior under conditions of shared attention are distinct from other \"bursts\" of activity like breaking news events. Using 290 million tweets from a panel of 193,532 politically active Twitter users, we compare features of their behavior during eight major events during the 2012 U.S. presidential election to examine how patterns of social media use change during these media events compared to \"typical\" time and whether these changes are attributable to shifts in the behavior of the population as a whole or shifts from particular segments such as elites. Compared to baseline time periods, our findings reveal that media events not only generate large volumes of tweets, but they are also associated with (1) substantial declines in interpersonal communication, (2) more highly concentrated attention by replying to and retweeting particular users, and (3) elite users predominantly benefiting from this attention. These findings empirically demonstrate how bursts of activity on Twitter during media events significantly alter underlying social processes of interpersonal communication and social interaction. Because the behavior of large populations within socio-technical systems can change so dramatically, our findings suggest the need for further research about how social media responses to media events can be used to support collective sensemaking, to promote informed deliberation, and to remain resilient in the face of misinformation.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology is an emerging technology using visible light modulation that, in the modern world, will mainly facilitate high-speed internet connectivity. VLC provides tremendous advantages compared to conventional radio frequency, such as a higher transmission rate, high bandwidth, low-power consumption, no health hazards, less interference, etc., which make it more prominent in recent days. Due to their outstanding features, including low cost, low power consumption, etc., µ-light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have gained considerable attention for VLC implementation, but mostly for the ability to be used for lighting as well as communications. In this review paper, we will focus mainly on recent developments in VLC applications and various factors affecting the modulation bandwidth of VLC devices. Numerous factors, such as quantum confined stark effect (QCSE), carrier lifetime, carrier recombination time, crystal orientation, etc. affect the modulation bandwidth of LEDs, and more information will be discussed in the following sections. This paper will focus on VLC applications based on LEDs but mainly on semipolar μ-LEDs and μ-LED-based arrays with high bandwidths. Another important application of VLC is underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC), which has drawn a huge interest in marine exploration and underwater connectivity, but still faces some challenges because visible light is being used. In addition, this paper will focus on how the current VLC system modulation bandwidth can be enhanced. Many methods have been introduced, such as decreasing the active layer thickness or effective active area or using doping, but the bandwidth is restricted by the recombination time when the system configuration reaches its limit. Therefore, it is important to find alternative ways such as optimizing the system, using the blue filter or using the equalization technology, which will be addressed later. Overall, this review paper provides a brief overview of the VLC-based system performance and some of its potential prospects.

Downregulation of PLK4 expression induces apoptosis and G0/G1‐phase cell cycle arrest in keloid fibroblasts

Objectives
Keloids are benign fibroproliferative tumors that display many cancer‐like characteristics, such as progressive uncontrolled growth, lack of spontaneous regression, and extremely high rates of recurrence. Polo‐like kinase 4 (PLK4) was recently identified as a master regulator of centriole replication, and its aberrant expression is closely associated with tumorigenesis. This study aimed to investigate the expression and biological role of PLK4 in the pathogenesis of keloids.
Materials and Methods
We evaluated the expression of PLK4 in keloids and adjacent normal skin tissue samples. Then, we established PLK4 knockdown and overexpression cell lines in keloid fibroblasts (KFs) and normal skin fibroblasts (NFs), respectively, to investigate the roles of PLK4 in the regulation of proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptosis, and cell cycle in KFs. Centrinone B (Cen‐B), a highly selective PLK4 inhibitor, was used to inhibit PLK4 activity in KFs to evaluate the therapeutic effect on KFs.
Results
We discovered that PLK4 was overexpressed in keloid dermal samples and KFs compared with adjacent normal skin samples and NFs derived from the same patients. High PLK4 expression was positively associated with the proliferation, migration, and invasion of KFs. Furthermore, knockdown of PLK4 expression or inhibition of PLK4 activity by Cen‐B suppressed KF growth, induced KF apoptosis via the caspase‐9/3 pathway, and induced cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in vitro.
Conclusions
These findings demonstrate that PLK4 is a critical regulator of KF proliferation, migration, and invasion, and thus, Cen‐B is a promising candidate drug for keloid treatment.

White light generation by mixing red, green, and blue laser diodes (RGB LDs) was demonstrated with Commission International de l’Eclairage coordinates of (0.2928, 0.2981), a correlated color temperature of 8382 K, and a color rendering index of 54.4 to provide a maximal illuminance of 7540 lux. All the white lights generated using RGB LDs were set within the risk group-1 criterion to avoid the blue-light hazard to human eyes. In addition, the RGB-LD mixed white light was diffused using a frosted glass to avoid optical aberration and to improve the performance of the lighting source. In addition, visible light communication (VLC) by using RGB-LD mixed white-light carriers and a point-to-point scheme over 1 m was performed in the directly modulated 16-QAM OFDM data format. In back-to-back transmission, the maximal allowable data rate at 10.8, 10.4, and 8 Gbps was determined for R, G, and B LDs, respectively. Moreover, the RGB-LD mixed white light-based indoor wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-VLC system yielded a total allowable transmission data rate of 8.8 Gbps over 0.5 m in free space. Such a high-speed RGB-LD mixed WDM-VLC system without any channel interference can be used to simultaneously provide data transmission and white lighting in an indoor environment.

A Novel γ′-Strengthened Nickel-Based Superalloy for Laser Powder Bed Fusion

An experimental printable γ′-strengthened nickel-based superalloy, MAD542, is proposed. By process optimization, a crack-free component with less than 0.06% defect was achieved by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). After post-processing by solution heat treatment, a recrystallized structure was revealed, which was also associated with the formation of annealing twins. After the aging treatment, 60–65% γ′ precipitates were obtained with a cuboidal morphology. The success of printing and post-processing the new MAD542 superalloy may give new insights into alloy design approaches for additive manufacturing.

Blue Laser Diode Enables Underwater Communication at 12.4 Gbps

To enable high-speed underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) in tap-water and seawater environments over long distances, a 450-nm blue GaN laser diode (LD) directly modulated by pre-leveled 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) data was employed to implement its maximal transmission capacity of up to 10 Gbps. The proposed UWOC in tap water provided a maximal allowable communication bit rate increase from 5.2 to 12.4 Gbps with the corresponding underwater transmission distance significantly reduced from 10.2 to 1.7 m, exhibiting a bit rate/distance decaying slope of −0.847 Gbps/m. When conducting the same type of UWOC in seawater, light scattering induced by impurities attenuated the blue laser power, thereby degrading the transmission with a slightly higher decay ratio of 0.941 Gbps/m. The blue LD based UWOC enables a 16-QAM OFDM bit rate of up to 7.2 Gbps for transmission in seawater more than 6.8 m.

Traditional bone tissue engineering (BTE) strategies induce direct bone-like matrix formation by mimicking the embryological process of intramembranous ossification. However, the clinical translation of these clinical strategies for bone repair is hampered by limited vascularization and poor bone regeneration after implantation in vivo. An alternative strategy for overcoming these drawbacks is engineering cartilaginous constructs by recapitulating the embryonic processes of endochondral ossification (ECO); these constructs have shown a unique ability to survive under hypoxic conditions as well as induce neovascularization and ossification. Such developmentally engineered constructs can act as transient biomimetic templates to facilitate bone regeneration in critical-sized defects. This review introduces the concept and mechanism of developmental BTE, explores the routes of endochondral bone graft engineering, highlights the current state of the art in large bone defect reconstruction via ECO-based strategies, and offers perspectives on the challenges and future directions of translating current knowledge from the bench to the bedside.

Kombucha fermentation of mulberry leaves and its effect on the content and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of flavonoid extracts

As the main drug for the treatment of type II diabetes, presently used α-glucosidase. inhibitors generally have serious side effects. Developing new, effective, safe, and economical α-glucosidase inhibitors from medicinal and edible plant resources have become a research hotspot. In this paper, Kombucha was used for the fermentation of dried mulberry leaves (ML-DS) and fresh mulberry leaves (ML-FS), with the aim of increasing the content and α-glucosidase inhibitory efficiency of active substances in ML.The research results indicated that both dried and fresh mulberry could be used as fermentation substrates for Kombucha, especially ML-FS. After 12 d of fermentation, pH value and reducing sugar concentration of the ML-FS was rapidly decreased from 6.46 to 2.78 and from 108.43 ± 5.33 mg/ml to 19.40 ± 1.67 mg/ml, respectively. As for the total flavonoid content in the extract of ML (MLF), the MLF content in the ML-FS that fermented for 12 d (ML-D12-FS) was increased by 49.46% compared to that in the unfermented ML (ML-D0-FS). Meanwhile, Kombucha fermentation also can significantly improve the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of MLF. At the concentration of 45.6 mg/L, the inhibition rate of ML-D12-FS on α-glucosidase reached to 85.88%, and the IC50 value decreased to 5.5 mg/L which was 16.7 mg/L for ML-D0-FS. This paper would provide an economical and green method for the production of α-glucosidase inhibitors from mulberry leaves.

The experiences of family caregivers in response to a dementia diagnosis disclosure

Background
Dementia is a serious disease that can lead to disability because it impacts the individual’s memory, cognition, behavior, and capacity to perform activities of daily living. While most people prefer to receive a full diagnostic disclosure, the actual care requirements of family caregivers of persons with dementia are often unknown after a dementia diagnosis is disclosed. The primary aim of this study was to explore the experiences of family caregivers in response to a dementia diagnosis disclosure and analyze the care needs of caregivers.
Methods
A qualitative study conducted in accordance with COREQ guidelines. The grounded theory approach was undertaken in 20 family caregivers of persons with dementia, who were selected using purposive sampling. Data were analysed using the constant comparative method.
Results
The core category of this study was \"diagnostic disclosure: Start the long road of care challenges\", which was defined as describing the experiences of family caregivers of persons with dementia after first being informed of diagnosis. Five major categories describing the experiences of family caregivers following a dementia diagnosis was developed: ‘deciding to seek medical attention,’ ‘the moment of disclosure,’ ‘conveying information,’ ‘maintaining the persons’ functioning,’ and ‘receiving support and living well with dementia.’ Subcategories within each major category also emerged.
Conclusions
Clear diagnostic disclosure is important for ensuring that positive developments can occur in response to disclosure. Healthcare professionals must develop strategies to prevent disclosure from triggering overreactive emotions from persons with cognitive impairments, assist them in understanding their illness in a tactful manner, and ensure that they understand how to cooperate in any subsequent care plans.
