Green Roofs Backgrounder for Landscape Contractors
To put it simply, green roofs are vegetated roof covers. Growing plants take the place of shingles and tiles. While the number of layers and layer placement vary from system to system and green roof type, all green roofs include a single to multi-ply waterproofing layer, drainage, growing media, and plants that cover the entire roof deck surface. Before jumping on the green roof bandwagon, landscape professionals should learn a bit more about the soil and vegetation used for a green roof system, along with the basic principles of green roof maintenance. For without making the proper selections with an understanding of the roof's care, the green roof may not survive. \"Sedum has proven to be the most tolerant plant media, especially in shallow soils,\" says Grace Koehler, sales manager for Midwest Groundcovers, a nursery in St. Charles, IL. \"Even with extreme fluctuations in climate, it usually survives, if not thrives.\" \"For instance, it is important that there is enough air space in the soil so that water and oxygen can move through the growth media,\" says Koehler. \"In addition, it must include all the nutrients for the plants to survive the initial installation, as well as thrive.\"

Going Green
\"Because landscape architects are leading in the design of green roofs across the country, it was important for us to build a demonstration project and measure the impact green roofs have on their surrounding communities,\" said Nancy Somerville, executive vice president and CEO of ASLA. \"The findings show that our green roof delivered significant economic and environmental benefits.\"
Cool and Green Roofs
If we could view a snapshot of every building in a typical American city, we would likely notice that virtually all of the buildings have dark roofs. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that more than 90 percent of all roofs in the United States are dark colored and comprised of low-reflective surfaces, with little or no vegetation. These conventional rooftops have served us well. But, with today's increased concerns about energy conservation and the environment, as well as new local, state, and federal regulations, they are fast becoming dinosaurs of another era. The largest problem with these roofs is that they can reach temperatures of 150 to 190 degrees F. during warm summer months. When this happens, cooling and electrical needs jump dramatically, which increases costs and power usage. Central business corridors heat up and create the urban heat island effect, causing personal discomfort and, again, contributing to rising costs and usage. Finally, rooftop deterioration increases significantly because the sun's rays and heat scorch the roof's surface. To alleviate the problem, more and more facilities are now installing 'cool' and green roofing systems (pictured at right). Often, both are installed on the same rooftop.
