Small rodents are known hosts of various pathogens, including Hepatozoon, but until now, in Brazil, only Hepatozoon milleri has been described in these animals. In this study, liver samples and blood smears were obtained from 289 rodents belonging to 14 Cricetidae and two Muridae species that had been captured in municipalities of the states of Paraná and Rio de Janeiro. Smears were stained with Giemsa, and gametocytes were detected via microscopy in 10.72% (n = 31/289) of samples, with these individuals representing three rodent species. Significant morphometric differences were observed in gametocyte measurements in Akodon rodents. Using conventional PCR, Hepatozoon spp. 18S rDNA fragments were amplified in 24.91% (n = 72/289) of samples, with those individuals representing seven rodent species. Phylogenetic analyses clustered 41 sequences from this study into a subclade with other sequences from small mammals in Brazil, identifying four distinct haplotypes, and, for the first time, a relationship between Hepatozoon haplotype and gametocyte length was observed. Based on phylogenetic analysis, this study reinforces the trophic relationship between rodents and reptiles as a possible link in the Hepatozoon transmission cycle in South America. Furthermore, our findings expand knowledge on Hepatozoon spp. hosts, describing Oxymycterus nasutus and Oxymycterus quaestor as new host species and identifying two novel circulating haplotypes in rodents from Paraná State, southern Brazil.

Effect of Perioperative Palliative Care on Health-Related Quality of Life Among Patients Undergoing Surgery for Cancer

Involvement of palliative care specialists in the care of medical oncology patients has been repeatedly observed to improve patient-reported outcomes, but there is no analogous research in surgical oncology populations.
To determine whether surgeon-palliative care team comanagement, compared with surgeon team alone management, improves patient-reported perioperative outcomes among patients pursuing curative-intent surgery for high morbidity and mortality upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.
From October 20, 2018, to March 31, 2022, a patient-randomized clinical trial was conducted with patients and clinicians nonblinded but the analysis team blinded to allocation. The trial was conducted in 5 geographically diverse academic medical centers in the US. Individuals pursuing curative-intent surgery for an upper GI cancer who had received no previous specialist palliative care were eligible. Surgeons were encouraged to offer participation to all eligible patients.
Surgeon-palliative care comanagement patients met with palliative care either in person or via telephone before surgery, 1 week after surgery, and 1, 2, and 3 months after surgery. For patients in the surgeon-alone group, surgeons were encouraged to follow National Comprehensive Cancer Network-recommended triggers for palliative care consultation.
The primary outcome of the trial was patient-reported health-related quality of life at 3 months following the operation. Secondary outcomes were patient-reported mental and physical distress. Intention-to-treat analysis was performed.
In total, 359 patients (175 [48.7%] men; mean [SD] age, 64.6 [10.7] years) were randomized to surgeon-alone (n = 177) or surgeon-palliative care comanagement (n = 182), with most patients (206 [57.4%]) undergoing pancreatic cancer surgery. No adverse events were associated with the intervention, and 11% of patients in the surgeon-alone and 90% in the surgeon-palliative care comanagement groups received palliative care consultation. There was no significant difference between study arms in outcomes at 3 months following the operation in patient-reported health-related quality of life (mean [SD], 138.54 [28.28] vs 136.90 [28.96]; P = .62), mental health (mean [SD], -0.07 [0.87] vs -0.07 [0.84]; P = .98), or overall number of deaths (6 [3.7%] vs 7 [4.1%]; P > .99).
To date, this is the first multisite randomized clinical trial to evaluate perioperative palliative care and the earliest integration of palliative care into cancer care. Unlike in medical oncology practice, the data from this trial do not suggest palliative care-associated improvements in patient-reported outcomes among patients pursuing curative-intent surgeries for upper GI cancers.

Modulation of miR-29a and ADAM12 Reduces Post-Ischemic Skeletal Muscle Injury and Improves Perfusion Recovery and Skeletal Muscle Function in a Mouse Model of Type 2 Diabetes and Peripheral Artery Disease

Both Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) are associated with an increased risk of limb amputation in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). How diabetes contributes to poor PAD outcomes is poorly understood but may occur through different mechanisms in DM1 and DM2. Previously, we identified a disintegrin and metalloproteinase gene 12 (ADAM12) as a key genetic modifier of post-ischemic perfusion recovery. In an experimental PAD, we showed that ADAM12 is regulated by miR-29a and this regulation is impaired in ischemic endothelial cells in DM1, contributing to poor perfusion recovery. Here we investigated whether miR-29a regulation of ADAM12 is altered in experimental PAD in the setting of DM2. We also explored whether modulation of miR-29a and ADAM12 expression can improve perfusion recovery and limb function in mice with DM2. Our result showed that in the ischemic limb of mice with DM2, miR-29a expression is poorly downregulated and ADAM12 upregulation is impaired. Inhibition of miR-29a and overexpression of ADAM12 improved perfusion recovery, reduced skeletal muscle injury, improved muscle function, and increased cleaved Tie 2 and AKT phosphorylation. Thus, inhibition of miR-29a and or augmentation of ADAM12 improves experimental PAD outcomes in DM2 likely through modulation of Tie 2 and AKT signalling.

This work proposes an antenna integrated with a frequency-selective surface (FSS) for applications in medical continuous monitoring systems with a reduced specific absorption rate (SAR). The antenna and FSS were fabricated on textile substrates made of cotton and polyester, which are used in textile products for health. The array operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. We selected three textile materials, each with varying proportions of cotton and polyester, for designing the antennas and FSS. Electrical characterization of the materials was conducted. The antenna was designed for a filled ground plane and rectangular patch fed by a microstrip line. The FSS was designed using square loops. The experimental operation of the FSS within the range of interest was observed through the transmission coefficient as a function of frequency. Phantoms were fabricated to simulate human tissues. We conducted a thermal analysis to assess the impact of continuous exposure to signal transmission from the integrated antenna. Results demonstrated a reduction in SAR of 77.78% relative to the antenna without the FSS, due to the effective rejection of the ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band signal by the FSS.

The Global Supply Chain of Wood Products: A Literature Review

The global supply chain of wood products plays a key role in sustainable development and climate resilience, but remains fragmented in the academic and technical literature. This systematic review aims to synthesize research published between 2000 and 2025 on wood products’ production, transformation, trade, governance, and sustainability. A comprehensive search was conducted in multiple databases and repositories, including Scopus, FAOSTAT, ScienceDirect, DOAJ, SciELO, CAPES, EMBRAPA, and AGNIC. A total of 784 records were identified and, after applying eligibility and deduplication criteria, 119 documents were included in the final synthesis. The results reveal key thematic trends, including the dynamics of international timber trade, certification and traceability systems, logistical challenges, digitalization, and integration of forest policies. Key gaps include limited inclusion of smallholders, low technology adoption in the Global South, and fragmented governance mechanisms. The results suggest that improving sustainability in global timber supply chains requires coordinated policy frameworks, technological investment, and inclusive market systems. This review contributes a consolidated overview and offers insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in the forestry sector.

La guanábana (Annona muricata) es un cultivo de importancia económica para Nayarit, México. Los frutos han tenido una excelente aceptación en el mercado regional, dificultando su comercialización a lugares lejanos porque la producción es altamente perecedera, aunado a que los árboles de los huertos de guanábana son en su mayoría ecotipos o fenotipos sin ningún plan de mejoramiento genético. Debido a la falta de variedades comerciales y de un banco de germoplasma, es importante conocer la diversidad genética para identificar y seleccionar genotipos; una de las herramientas para este propósito es el uso de marcadores moleculares. El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar la diversidad genética de guanábana de las principales zonas productoras de Nayarit. Se extrajo ADN genómico de hojas de guanábana, las cuales fueron recolectadas de 11 huertos (poblaciones) de las siguientes zonas: Compostela (cinco poblaciones), Tepic (tres poblaciones) y San Blas (tres poblaciones). Posteriormente, se realizó un análisis mediante marcadores moleculares SSR y SRAP. Los resultados indicaron que los SSR no mostraron polimorfismo entre las poblaciones. Por otro lado, en los marcadores SRAP se obtuvieron 116 loci polimórficos con un promedio de porcentaje de loci polimórfico (P) entre las zonas productoras de 29,55 %. Asimismo, se realizó un AMOVA, el cual mostró que el mayor porcentaje de varianza se encuentra dentro de las poblaciones. Además, los análisis de agrupamiento demostraron la formación de tres grupos independientes. Por tanto, se obtuvo una alta homocigocidad y baja diversidad genética de guanábana entre las zonas y poblaciones estudiadas.

Objetivo: avaliar a frequência e os fatores associados à dislipidemia em pessoas com Diabetes Mellitus Tipo 2. Método: estudo transversal, desenvolvido com 45 pessoas diagnosticadas com diabetes e acompanhadas por uma Unidade Básica de Saúde. Foram investigadas variáveis sociodemográficas, relacionadas ao estilo de vida e referentes à análise do perfil lipídico. Resultados: a prevalência de dislipidemia foi de 82,2%, significativamente associada ao sexo feminino (p=0,005), ao tabagismo (p=0,002) e ao sedentarismo (p=0,050). Nos componentes da dislipidemia, as taxas de colesterol total, triglicérides e LDL se mostraram elevados em 68,9%, 57,8%, 11,1%, respectivamente. Já a taxa de HDL se mostrou diminuída em 2,2% dos investigados. Conclusão: a prevalência de dislipidemia mostrou-se elevada nos pacientes analisados. A existência de associação significativa entre a ocorrência de dislipidemia e variáveis como o sexo feminino, os hábitos de tabagismo e sedentarismo chama a atenção para a necessidade de melhores condutas para essa população.
