A 220- to 299-GHz CMOS Terahertz Detector
2019
This paper proposes a terahertz (THz) detector in a 180-nm standard CMOS process. The detector consists of a square loop antenna and an NMOS transistor. The antenna has two feed ports. One is connected to the source of the transistor and the other is grounded to provide the source a dc ground. To improve the power transfer efficiency between the antenna and the transistor, impedance matching between them is needed. It is concluded that in order to increase the voltage responsivity of the detector, impedance matching should be achieved by changing the impedance of the antenna rather than by changing the impedance of the transistor. The parasitic capacitance and inductance of the gate power supply line will affect the antenna-transistor impedance matching. An open microstrip transmission line connected to the gate is designed to eliminate this influence. Measurement results show that the detector can detect THz radiation in the frequency range of 220 to 299 GHz. At 244 GHz, the detector achieves a best voltage responsivity of 2497 V/W and a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 357 pW/Hz

The influence of early adoption of nonenhanced computed tomography on management of patients with pyogenic liver abscess
2023
Background and Aim A pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is an infectious disease with high in‐hospital mortality. It has no specific symptoms and is difficult to be diagnosed early in the emergency department. Ultrasound is commonly used to detect PLA lesions of PLA, but its sensitivity can be affected by lesion size, location, and clinician experience. Therefore, early diagnosis and prompt treatment (especially abscess drainage) are crucial for better patient outcomes and should be prioritized by clinical physicians. Methods We conducted a retrospective study to compare the effect of early and late (i.e., receiving CT scanning within 48 h and >48 h after admission) adoption of nonenhanced computed tomography (CT) scanning regarding the hospitalization days and interval between admission and drainage of patients with PLA. Results This study included 76 hospitalized patients with PLA in the Department of Digestive Disease of Xiamen Chang Gung Hospital in China who underwent CT examinations from 2014 to 2021. We conducted CT scans on 56 patients within 48 h of admission and on 20 patients more than 48 h after admission. The early CT group had a significantly shorter hospitalization length compared with the late CT group (15.0 days vs. 20.5 days; P = 0.035). Besides, the median time to initiate drainage after admission was also significantly shorter in the early CT group than in the late CT group (1.0 days vs. 4.5 days; P < 0.001). Conclusion Early CT scanning within 48 h of admission may aid in early PLA diagnosis and benefit disease recovery, as revealed by our findings. Nonenhancement of early CT could be a clue to make prompt diagnosis for liver abscess, especially for nongastroenterologists.

Efficacy of surgery combined with photodynamic therapy or triamcinolone acetonide for keloid treatment: An interim analysis of nine cases
2023
Photodynamic therapy emerged in the 1900s and recently, it has been developed as a novel modality for treating tumors, precancerous lesions, hypertrophic skin diseases, vascular diseases and so on. We aimed to compare the efficacy and adverse effects of surgery combined with photodynamic therapy or triamcinolone acetonide injection for keloid treatment. This self‐controlled study included nine patients with keloids. Two keloid sites were selected for each patient: one site received photodynamic therapy (PDT group) and the other site received local triamcinolone acetonide injections (TA group). All the keloids were surgically excised. The Vancouver Scar Scale and pruritus and pain scores were assessed at 3 and 6 months, respectively. At 3 and 6 months postoperatively, the pruritus and pain scores decreased significantly (P < .01) and equally in both groups (P > .05). At 6 months postoperatively, the PDT group showed the following results: complete cure, one patient; significantly effective, four patients; effective, four patients; and ineffective, no patient (efficacy, 100%). The TA group showed the following results: complete cure, one patient; significantly effective, three patients; effective, four patients; and ineffective, one patient (efficacy, 88.9%). Between‐group differences were not significant (P > .05). Hyperpigmentation was observed (n = 2) in the experimental group, whereas menstrual disorders (n = 2), local capillary dilation (n = 1) and subcutaneous atrophy (n = 1) were observed in the TA group. Photodynamic therapy and local triamcinolone acetonide are equally and highly effective in treating keloids with few side effects and when combined with surgery. Keloids are recurrent or refractory pathological scars that exhibit cancer‐like biological characteristics. Dermatological applications of 5‐aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy have achieved favorable therapeutic effects in treating skin conditions. This study compared the clinical efficacy and adverse effects of surgery plus photodynamic therapy and surgery plus local triamcinolone acetonide injection. Photodynamic therapy and local triamcinolone acetonide combined with surgery are equally and highly effective at treating keloids with few side effects.

Recent evidence shows that resveratrol (RSV) may ameliorate high-glucose-induced cardiac oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and myocardial fibrosis in diabetes. However, the mechanisms by which RSV regulates mitochondrial function in diabetic cardiomyopathy have not been fully elucidated. Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to cardiac dysfunction in diabetic patients, which is associated with dysregulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α(PGC-1α). In this study we examined whether resveratrol alleviated cardiac dysfunction in diabetes by improving mitochondrial function via SIRTi-mediated PGC-1α deacetylation. T2DM was induced in rats by a high-fat diet combined with STZ injection. Diabetic rats were orally administered RSV (50 mg·kg^-1·d^-1) for 16 weeks. RSV administration significantly attenuated diabetes-induced cardiac dysfunction and hypertrophy evidenced by increasing ejection fraction (EF%), fraction shortening (FS%), ratio of early diastolic peak velocity (E velocity) and late diastolic peak velocity (A velocity) of the LV inflow (E/A ratio) and reducing expression levels of pro-hypertrophic markers ANP, BNP and 13-MHC. Furthermore, manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, ATP content, mitochondrial DNA copy number, mitochondrial membrane potential and the expression of nuclear respiration factor (NRF) were all significantly increased in diabetic hearts by RSV administration, whereas the levels of malondialdehvde (MDA) and uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) were significantly decreased. Moreover RSV administration significantly activated SIRT1 expression and increased PGC-1α deacetylation. H9c2 cells cultured in a high glucose (HG, 30 mmol/L) condition were used for further analyzing the role of SIRT1/PGC-i(x pathway in RSV regulation of mitochondrial function. RSV (20 μmol/L) caused similar beneficial effects in HG-treated H9c2 cells in vitro as in diabetic rats, but these protective effects were abolished by addition of a SIRT1 inhibitor sirtinol (25μmol/L) or by SIRT1 siRNA transfection. In H9c2 cells, RSV-induced PGC-1α deacetylation was dependent on SIRT1, which was also abolished by a SIRT1 inhibitor and SIRT1 siRNA transfection. Our results demonstrate that resveratrol attenuates cardiac injury in diabetic rats through regulation of mitochondrial function, which is mediated partly through SIRTi activation and increased PGC-1α deacetylation.

Furan-containing conjugated polymers for organic solar cells
2017
Development of organic semiconductors is one of the most intriguing and productive topics in material science and engineering. Many efforts have been made on the synthesis of aromatic building blocks such as benzene, thiophene and pyrrole due to the facile preparation accompanied by the intrinsic environmental stability and relatively efficient properties of the resulting polymers. In the past, furan has been less explored in this field because of its high oxidation potential. Recently, furan has attracted obsession due to its weaker aromaticity, the greater solubilities of furan-containing π-conjugated polymers relative to other benzenoid systems and the accessibility of furan-based starting materials from renewable resources. This review elaborates the advancements of organic photovoltaic polymers containing furan building blocks. The uniqueness and advantages of furan-containing building blocks in semiconducting materials are also discussed.

Optically pumped terahertz sources
2017
High-power terahertz (THz) generation in the frequency range of 0.1–10 THz has been a fast-developing research area ever since the beginning of the THz boom two decades ago, enabling new technological breakthroughs in spectroscopy, communication, imaging, etc. By using optical (laser) pumping methods with near- or mid-infrared (IR) lasers, flexible and practical THz sources covering the whole THz range can be realized to overcome the shortage of electronic THz sources and now they are playing important roles in THz science and technology. This paper overviews various optically pumped THz sources, including femtosecond laser based ultrafast broadband THz generation, monochromatic widely tunable THz generation, single-mode on-chip THz source from photomixing, and the traditional powerful THz gas lasers. Full descriptions from basic principles to the latest progress are presented and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed as well. It is expected that this review gives a comprehensive reference to researchers in this area and additionally helps newcomers to quickly gain understanding of optically pumped THz sources.

Scale effects on nonlocal buckling analysis of bilayer composite plates under non-uniform uniaxial loads
2015
Scale effects are studied on the buckling behavior of bilayer composite plates under non-uniform uniaxial compression via the nonlocal theory. Each isotropic plate is composed of a material that is different from others, and the adhesive between the plates is modeled as the Winkler elastic medium. According to the symmetry, effects of the Winkler non-dimensional parameter, the thickness ratio, the ratio of Young’s moduli, and the aspect ratio are also considered on the buckling problem of bilayer plates, where only the top plate is under the uniaxial compression. Numerical examples show that the Winkler elastic coefficient, the thickness ratio, and the ratio of Young’s moduli play decisive roles in the buckling behavior. Nonlocal effect is significant when the high-order buckling mode occurs or the aspect ratio is small.
