The Impact of Ecological Governance Projects on Regional Ecological Carrying Capacity Under Climate Change
Ecological governance projects have great potential benefits, but there is a lack of quantitative evaluation of their impacts in terms of enhancing regional ecological carrying capacity under climate change. To quantitatively evaluate the impact of ecological governance projects on regional ecological carrying capacity, a quantitative evaluation model was developed by coupling the classical ecological footprint and ecological service value theory. This model was validated using the water source treatment project (hereinafter referred to as the “DZ” project) of the Middle Route of China’s South to North Water Diversion Project, which is the world’s largest water diversion project, as an example. The results showed the following: (1) During the implementation of the “DZ” project, the per capita ecological carrying capacity of the reservoir area experienced a wave-like growth trend, with an increase of 0.103615 hm2 and a yield increase rate of 20.00%. The “DZ” project has outstanding ecological benefits, valued at approximately USD 125.272266 million. (2) The “DZ” project has contributed to the improvement of the ecological carrying capacity in the Henan area of the Danjiang Reservoir by about 10.14%, demonstrating that such projects have a considerable impact on efforts to improve regional ecological carrying capacity under climate change.
Biochar to improve soil fertility. A review
Soil mineral depletion is a major issue due mainly to soil erosion and nutrient leaching. The addition of biochar is a solution because biochar has been shown to improve soil fertility, to promote plant growth, to increase crop yield, and to reduce contaminations. We review here biochar potential to improve soil fertility. The main properties of biochar are the following: high surface area with many functional groups, high nutrient content, and slow-release fertilizer. We discuss the influence of feedstock, pyrolysis temperature, pH, application rates, and soil types. We review the mechanisms ruling the adsorption of nutrients by biochar.
Combined consideration of body mass index and waist circumference identifies obesity patterns associated with risk of stroke in a Chinese prospective cohort study
Background In China, few studies have examined the relationship between the combination of body mass index and waist circumference and the risk of stroke. Moreover, the relationship may also be different in different genders. Thus, we investigated the association between the combination of body mass index and waist circumference and the risk of stroke in Chinese. Methods This prospective cohort study included 36 632 participants aged 18 to 90 years. Participants were recruited from 60 surveillance sites (25 urban sites and 35 rural sites) across China in 2010 China Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance, and followed up in 2016-2017. Incident cases of stroke were identified through questionnaires (including the basis of clinical diagnosis, imaging tests, time of diagnosis, diagnosis unit) and Cardiovascular Event Report System. Risk factors for stroke were collected at baseline using questionnaire, physical measurements and laboratory tests. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to generate adjusted hazard ratios and 95%CI. All analyses were duplicated by gender stratification. Results During 6.42 ± 0.50 years of follow-up, 1 333 (597 males, 736 females) stroke events were observed among the 27 112 participants who did not have cardiovascular diseases at baseline. Compared with the general population who have normal weight or underweight with normal WC, those who have normal weight or underweight with abdominal obesity (adjusted hazard ratios 1.45, 95%CI 1.07-1.97 in males; 0.98, 95%CI 0.78-1.24 in females), overweight with abdominal obesity (1.41, 95%CI 1.14-1.75 in males; 1.33, 95%CI 1.10-1.61 in females), obesity with abdominal obesity (1.46, 95%CI 1.11-1.91 in males; 1.46, 95%CI 1.17-1.81 in females). Overweight with normal WC was found to be not statistically significant for both males and females (all P >0.05). Subgroup analysis found a multiplicative interaction between age and anthropometric group in females ( P for interaction <0.05). Sensitivity analysis results did not change. In the subjects with CVD risk factors, we found a similar relationship as in the general population . Conclusions Combined assessment of body mass index and waist circumference identifies obesity patterns associated with stroke risk.
Abnormal glycosylation changes in brain tissue of kainic acid-induced epileptic rats
Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. Despite significant progress in epilepsy research, about 30% of patients continue to experience uncontrolled seizures and clear diagnostic criteria remain elusive. Abnormal glycosylation contributes to various neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. However, it is unclear whether protein glycosylation is altered in epilepsy. Herein, we established a chronic epilepsy rat model by injecting kainic acid solution into the right lateral ventricle and examined the changes in protein N -glycosylation and O -GlcNAcylation in rat brain tissues using mass spectrometry and lectin blotting. We found a significant reduction in complex N -glycan abundance in the hippocampal tissue of epileptic rats, which may be related to decreased MGAT1 expression. Additionally, we observed a marked decrease in protein O -GlcNAcylation, which may be associated with reduced levels of GFPT1, the rate-limiting enzyme in the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway. This research offers new insight into potential therapeutic strategies for epilepsy.
Grid resource data differentiation standard based on CIM model
Aiming at the problem of differential data processing of power grid resources, this paper puts forward a power grid data processing method based on Common Information Model (CIM) model. CIM integrates various departments of enterprises using modern computer technology, covering multiple links, and optimizes automation management in the manufacturing industry through the integration of software and hardware. By analyzing the characteristics and relations between single type and different types of power grid resource data, this paper stratifies and combines the power grid equipment and resources in CIM model, forming a brand-new data processing mode. This model can not only solve the problem of heterogeneity of power grid resource data, but also effectively integrate and process data from different sources and formats. In the process of data processing, regression analysis is used to adjust and optimize according to the actual data to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the data. The experimental results show that this method can significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of data processing, and can better reflect the characteristics and status of power grid resources, which has high practical value.
Comprehensive evaluation of nine evapotranspiration products from remote sensing, gauge upscaling and land surface model over China
Benefiting from the advancements in monitoring and measuring terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET), diverse ET products have been proliferated. This study evaluated nine ET products from three types, namely remote sensing-based retrievals (GLEAM, PML and PLSH), gauge-based upscaling (FCCRU, FCGSW and FCWFD) and land surface model-based reanalysis (ERA5-Land, GLDAS and MERRA) over China and its seven climate zones. Both spatial and temporal change trends in ET were investigated, and period feature were analyzed. Then, in-situ ET observations were used for validating the performances of ET products. The results demonstrate that all products show comparable performances in spatial distribution over China, but the mean ET values present evident discrepancies (433–563 mm/a). Among them, reanalysis ET products reproduce higher ET, but with less difference. In terms of climate sub-regions, the most significant discrepancies are located in QT. In addition, PLSH, MERRA and GLDAS present substantial increasing trends, while all three gauge-based upscaling ET products display decreasing trends. Regionally, all the ET products show positive trends in QT. Moreover, most of ET products present apparent periodic oscillation ranging from 2.0–5.5 year scales. At point scale, most ET products perform well at NMG and CBS sites (CC > 0.80, RMSE < 20 mm/month). However, general underestimations appear in northwestern China sites (HB and DX), and systematical overestimation exist in southern China sites (DHS and XSBN). By comparison, remote sensing-based ET products performs best, followed by gauge-based upscaling ET, comparatively, reanalysis-based ET products have poorest performances against in-situ ET observations. This study can provide valuable reference information for the selection of proper ET datasets for the hydrological simulation and analysis over China.
Review of Development Trend of Transportation Energy System and Energy Usages in China Considering Influences of Intelligent Technologies
With the continuous development of intelligent transportation technologies, new ways of energy usage in transportation continue to emerge, which puts forward new requirements for the planning and design of energy systems. However, comprehensive analyses on the characteristics of transportation energy systems and the development trend of energy usage patterns brought by intelligent technologies have rarely been carried out so far. This paper explores this subject by reviewing the recent development and utilization of intelligent technologies in the transportation system and its impacts on energy usage. This review is carried out from three aspects, covering the representative intelligent transportation and energy technologies on vehicles, infrastructures and systems. The scope is limited within road, railway and water transport domains, with a focus on the recent developments in China as a representative. In terms of vehicles, the development trend of the power systems for new energy vehicles, the characteristics of energy usages in electric vehicles and the effects on energy saving and emission reduction are summarized. In terms of infrastructures, new technologies on smart road, smart port, intelligent railway energy system and the usage of clear energy on electric grid for transportation are reviewed, with the consideration of their potential influences on energy usages and the energy consumption characteristics of typical facilities also being analyzed. As for the transportation system, this review has focused on intelligent and connected transportation systems, train control and autonomous systems, and intelligent shipping system, with the emphasis on the energy saving and emission reduction effects of applying these intelligent technologies. The overall development trend of the transportation energy system is then analyzed based on the above materials, in particular, the future energy usage patterns in transportation system are given and the major challenges and obstacles approaching the future scenarios are also identified.
Relationship between BMI and risk of impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose in Chinese adults: a prospective study
Background Current studies in most Western countries have largely focused on body mass index (BMI) as an important risk factor for impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG), which have different pathophysiological bases. In people with obesity, the prevalence of IGT is higher and the prevalence of IFG is lower. The prevalence of IGT in the Asian population is higher than that in the white population, and the obesity rate in China is still increasing. However, few cohort studies explore the relationship between BMI and the incidence of IGT and IFG in China. We aimed to explore the relationship between BMI and the risk of IGT and IFG in Chinese adults and analyze the differences between them. Methods The baseline data were obtained from the 2010 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance, of which 20 surveillance sites were followed up from 2016 to 2017. Finally, in this study, a total of 5,578 studies were grouped into BMI categories of underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m 2 ), normal weight (18.5–23.9 kg/m 2 ), overweight (24.0–27.9 kg/m 2 ), and obesity (≥ 28.0 kg/m 2 ). We used the unconditional logistic regression model to analyze the relationship between BMI and the risk of IGT and IFG. Results During an average follow-up of 6.4 years, 562 developed IGT and 257 developed IFG. After age, gender, urban and rural areas, physical activity, family history of diabetes, hypertension, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, and other factors were adjusted, overweight increased the risk of IGT by 35% [odds ratio ( OR ) 1.35, 95% confidence interval ( CI ) 1.08–1.70], and obesity increased the risk of IGT by 77% ( OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.27–1.47). After the factors consistent with the above were adjusted, only obesity increased the risk of IFG by 122% ( OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.39–3.54). Conclusions In China, obesity is an important risk factor for IGT and IFG, and the risk of IGT increases during the overweight stage.
The efficacy and safety of post-stroke cognitive impairment therapies: an umbrella review
Background: Stroke survivors are at significantly increased risk of cognitive impairment, which affects patients’ independence of activities of daily living (ADLs), social engagement, and neurological function deficit. Many studies have been done to evaluate the efficacy and safety of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) treatment, and due to the largely inconsistent clinical data, there is a need to summarize and analyze the published clinical research data in this area. Objective: An umbrella review was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PSCI therapies. Methods: Three independent authors searched for meta-analyses and systematic reviews on PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science to address this issue. We examined ADL and Barthel index (BI), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), neurological function deficit as efficacy endpoints, and the incidence of adverse events as safety profiles. Results: In all, 312 studies from 19 eligible publications were included in the umbrella review. The results showed that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists, cell therapies, acupuncture, and EGB76 can improve the MoCA and ADL, and the adverse effects were mild for the treatment of PSCI. Moreover, Vinpocetine, Oxiracetam, Citicoline, thrombolytic therapy, Actovegin, DL-3-n-Butylphthalide, and Nimodipine showed adverse events or low article quality in patients with PSCI. However, the research evidence is not exact and further research is needed. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that ACEI inhibitors (Donepezil) and NMDA antagonists (Memantine), EGB761, and acupuncture are the ADL and BI, MoCA, and neurological function deficit medication/therapy, respectively, for patients with PSCI. Targeted Delivery of Engineered RVG-BDNF-Exosomes: A Novel Neurobiological Approach for Ameliorating Depression and Regulating Neurogenesis
Addressing the urgent need for innovative depression treatments, this study heralds a breakthrough in major depressive disorder (MDD) therapy by intertwining clinical observations with neurobiological advancements. We analyzed brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in serum exosomes from a diverse group of 60 individuals, including first-episode, drug-free MDD patients, medicated MDD patients, and healthy controls. Our results revealed a significant decrease in BDNF levels within MDD patients’ exosomes, which notably increased post-medication, highlighting BDNF’s potential as a biomarker for both MDD diagnosis and treatment efficacy. Advancing these clinical findings, we developed RVG-modified exosomes engineered to overexpress BDNF (RVG-BDNF-Exos), designed to directly target neuronal cells. Our findings demonstrate that these engineered exosomes can successfully traverse the blood–brain barrier, targeting neurons in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. In our mouse model of depression induced by lipopolysaccharide, RVG-BDNF-Exos treatment led to a significant increase of BDNF in these key brain regions, crucial for mood regulation and neurogenesis. This intervention modulated the BDNF/TrkB/AKT signaling pathway, central to neural plasticity and implicated in depression’s pathogenesis. Behavioral assessments exhibited substantial improvements in depressive-like behaviors in mice treated with RVG-BDNF-Exos, including reduced immobility in Tail Suspension and Forced Swim Tests. Additionally, our treatment effectively decreased neuroinflammation, as evidenced by the reduction in microglia and astrocyte numbers. Moreover, RVG-BDNF-Exos treatment enhanced neurogenesis and regulated synaptic plasticity, as indicated by the increased expression of neuronal markers MAP2 and DCX, and synaptic proteins PSD95 and Syn-1. In conclusion, this study not only underscores the clinical potential of serum exosomal BDNF as a diagnostic and therapeutic marker for MDD but also demonstrates the efficacy of RVG-BDNF-Exos in alleviating depressive symptoms. Our findings pave the way for future targeted, personalized psychiatric treatments, offering a promising direction in MDD therapy.
