Purpose
To understand the behavior of the magnetization processes in ferromagnetic materials in function of temperature, a temperature-dependent hysteresis model is necessary. This study aims to investigate how temperature can be accounted for in the energy-based hysteresis model, via an appropriate parameter identification and interpolation procedure.
Design/methodology/approach
The hysteresis model used for simulating the material response is energy-consistent and relies on thermodynamic principles. The material parameters have been identified by unidirectional alternating measurements, and the model has been tested for both simple and complex excitation waveforms. Measurements and simulations have been performed on a soft ferrite toroidal sample characterized in a wide temperature range.
Findings
The analysis shows that the model is able to represent accurately arbitrary excitation waveforms in function of temperature. The identification method used to determine the model parameters has proven its robustness: starting from simple excitation waveforms, the complex ones can be simulated precisely.
Research limitations/implications
As parameters vary depending on temperature, a new parameter variation law in function of temperature has been proposed.
Practical implications
A complete static hysteresis model able to take the temperature into account is now available. The identification is quite simple and requires very few measurements at different temperatures.
Originality/value
The results suggest that it is possible to predict magnetization curves within the measured range, starting from a reduced set of measured data.

The Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena in Catania, a UNESCO World Heritage site, embodies a complex architectural and historical stratigraphy, reflecting successive construction phases, functional changes, and the impact of catastrophic events, including the 1669 lava flow and the 1693 earthquake. As part of the CHANGES project, this study combines historical–archaeological research with non-invasive in situ scientific analyses to investigate the materials and the conservation state of the monumental complex. Stratigraphic analysis identified multiple masonry and plaster units, allowing the reconstruction of five main construction phases and related functional changes. Portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF), Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFT), and handheld optical microscopy provided rapid insights into the chemical and mineralogical composition of plasters and mortars, highlighting lime-based binders with variable aggregate, including volcanic clasts, sand, and cocciopesto. In situ diagnostic analyses allowed us to distinguish pre- and post-earthquake materials, while historical data contextualized construction phases and functional transformations. The integration of archaeological and scientific approaches proved to be complementary: historical evidence guides the selection of analytical targets, while diagnostic results enrich and validate the interpretation of the building’s evolution. This interdisciplinary methodology establishes a robust framework for the understanding and valorization of complex cultural heritage sites.

Roughly 3% of patients worldwide with a new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) already have an overt nephropathy at diagnosis and about 20–30% of the remaining ones develop a complication of this kind later in life. The early identification of kidney disease in diabetic patients is important as it slows its progression, which is important not only because this reduces the need for renal replacement therapy, but also because it decreases the high rate of mortality and morbidity associated with a reduction in kidney function. The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes and the consequent greater probability of finding different types of kidney diseases in diabetic patients frequently gives rise to overlapping diagnoses, a definition encompassing the differential diagnosis between diabetic and non-diabetic kidney disease. The issue is made more complex by the acknowledgement of the increasing frequency of presentations of what is termed “diabetic kidney disease” without relevant proteinuria, in particular in T2DM patients. Distinguishing between diabetes related and non-diabetes related forms of kidney disease in diabetic patients is not only a semantic question, as different diseases require different clinical management. However, while the urologic and macrovascular complications of diabetes, as well as overlapping parenchymal damage, can be diagnosed by means of imaging studies, often only a kidney biopsy will make a differential diagnosis possible. In fact, the coexistence of typical diabetic lesions, such as nodular glomerulopathy or glomerulosclerosis, with different glomerular, vascular and tubulo-interstitial alterations has been extensively described, and an analysis of the dominant histological pattern can contribute to determining what therapeutic approach should be adopted. However, due to the high frequency of kidney diseases, and to the fact that T2DM patients are often affected by multiple comorbidities, a kidney biopsy is not generally performed in T2DM patients. What follows is a review aiming to discuss the diagnostic work-up, on the base of clinical, laboratory and imaging criteria, and evaluate the present indications and alternatives to renal biopsy.

Differences in Efficacy between Antibacterial Lock Therapy and the Standard of Care for CVC-Related Infections: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Central Venous Catheter (CVC)-related infections cannot always be solved by replacement, due to some vascular anomalies or an emergency status. This comprehensive, evidence-based review aimed to define the efficacy of antibacterial lock therapy (ALT) compared to the standard of care (SoC) in CVC-related infections. Methods: We performed a systematic search in PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar, looking for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort or case-control observational studies. The eligible studies considered the subjects with a diagnosis of CVC-related infections treated with antibacterial lock therapy (ALT) compared to the standard of care (SoC). Results: Among 609 records at the end of the selection process, five articles, referring to observational studies, were included in this systematic review. In pooled analyses, including a total of 276 individuals, microbiological healing (OR 3.78; 95% CI; 2.03–7.03) showed significant differences between ALT and the SoC, with a follow-up varying from 2 weeks to 3 months. Conclusions: Our results suggested that ALT could improve the preservation of CVCs and could be considered when their replacement is not possible as a result of vascular problems. However, only observational studies were included and RCTs are needed to confirm these findings and to increase the level of evidence.

Indole-3-acetic acid correlates with monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (MHR) in chronic kidney disease patients

PurposeIndole-3-acetic acid is a protein-bound indolic uremic toxin deriving from tryptophan metabolism. Increased levels are associated with higher thrombotic risk and both cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. An emerging biomarker of cardiovascular disease is the monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR). The main purpose of this study was to investigate the association of indole-3-acetic acid with MHR and other markers of cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).MethodsWe enrolled 61 non-dialysis CKD patients and 6 dialysis patients. Indole-3-acetic acid levels were measured with ELISA technique.ResultsIn the whole cohort of 67 patients, indole-3-acetic acid was directly related to Ca × P (ρ = 0.256; P = 0.0365) and MHR (ρ = 0.321; P = 0.0082). In the 40 patients with previous cardiovascular events, indole-3-acetic acid correlated with uric acid (r = 0.3952; P = 0.0116) and MHR (ρ = 0.380; P = 0.0157). MHR was related with fibrinogen (ρ = 0.426; P = 0.0010), arterial hypertension (ρ = 0.274; P = 0.0251), C-reactive protein (ρ = 0.332; P = 0.0061), gender (ρ = − 0.375; P = 0.0017; 0 = male, 1 = female), and CKD stage (ρ = 0.260; P = 0.0337). A multiple regression analysis suggested that indole-3-acetic acid might be an independent predictor of MHR.ConclusionThis study shows a significant association between indole-3-acetic acid and MHR. Prospective studies are required to evaluate if decreasing indole-3-acetic acid concentrations may reduce MHR levels and cardiovascular events and improve clinical outcomes.
