FlueBricks: A Construction Kit of Flute-like Instruments for Acoustic Reasoning
We present FlueBricks, a construction kit for acoustic reasoning via building and customizing flute-like instruments. By assembling generator, resonator, and connector modules that embody various aeroacoustic properties, users gain deeper understanding of how blowhole, tube length, and tone-hole placement alter onset, pitch, and timbre through hands-on experimentation. This forms a designer-player loop of configuring and playing to form, test, and refine acoustic behaviors-acoustic reasoning-shifting acoustic instruments from static artifacts to dynamic systems. To understand how users engage with this system, we conducted an exploratory study with 12 participants ranging from novices to professional musicians. During their explorations, we observed participants fluently switching between designer and player roles, scaffolding designs from familiar instruments, forming and refining their acoustic understanding of length, tone holes, and generator geometry, reinterpreting modules beyond their intended functions, and using their creations for performative acts such as pedagogical showing and musical expression. These collectively demonstrated FlueBricks's potential as a pedagogical tool for embodied acoustic reasoning.
FeltingReel: Density Varying Soft Fabrication with Reeling and Felting
FeltingReel is a soft fabrication system that allows users to create a 3D non-woven textile with various structural strengths. Our system coils wool yarn onto a central reel to form a basic shape and uses actuated barbed needles to refine it. By controlling the coiling tension and the felting times, our system varies the density of the workpiece in a target area to achieve various structural strengths. Specifically, our system controls the tilt of coiling and felting using a Stewart platform around a motorized rotating reel. Our system also allows different basic shapes with hollow internal structures to be formed by changing the detachable reel core. We investigate the effects of different felting needles, frequencies, and coiling directions that influence the density, structural strength, and fabrication time of a workpiece. We propose three methods to combine felting and reeling. We evaluate their performances and final products by producing two example workpieces using our system. We demonstrate several objects made by our working system and discuss its capabilities and limitations.
BetterMinton Service: Analyzing the Badminton Service using Open Kinetic Chain
We present a badminton training system that focuses on the backhand short service. Unlike the prior motor skill training systems which focus on the trainee's posture, our system analyzes the process of moving joints with the open kinetic chain (OKC), which helps align movement and minimize muscle use for better joint control. We process the users' mocap data to visually show their last service process comparing to 4 ideal OKC characteristics that we collected from a 6-sub-elite formative study as well as recommended contact posture. We validate our system through a 12-user study that measures serving accuracy, qualitative feedback, and skeletal data with users at various skill levels and open source our skeletal analysis model for future use. While the participants' overall service accuracy was not significantly improved, our results show that our system helps participants in the short term to fine-tune their service motion closer to our ideal 4 OKC characteristics.
Clonemator: Composing Spatiotemporal Clones to Create Interactive Automators in Virtual Reality
Clonemator is a virtual reality (VR) system allowing users to create their avatar clones and configure them spatially and temporally, forming automators to accomplish complex tasks. In particular, clones can (1) freeze at a user's body pose as static objects, (2) synchronously mimic the user's movement, and (3) replay a sequence of the user's actions in a period of time later. Combined with traditional techniques such as scaling, positional rearrangement, group selection, and duplication, Clonemator enables users to iteratively develop customized and reusable solutions by breaking down complex tasks into a sequence of collaborations with clones. This bypasses implementing dedicated interaction techniques or scripts while allowing flexible interactions in VR applications. We demonstrate the flexibility of Clonemator with several examples and validate its usability and effectiveness through a preliminary user study. Finally, we discuss the potential of Clonemator in VR applications such as gaming mechanisms, spatial interaction techniques, and multi-robot control and provide our insights for future research.
SimTube: Generating Simulated Video Comments through Multimodal AI and User Personas
Audience feedback is crucial for refining video content, yet it typically comes after publication, limiting creators' ability to make timely adjustments. To bridge this gap, we introduce SimTube, a generative AI system designed to simulate audience feedback in the form of video comments before a video's release. SimTube features a computational pipeline that integrates multimodal data from the video-such as visuals, audio, and metadata-with user personas derived from a broad and diverse corpus of audience demographics, generating varied and contextually relevant feedback. Furthermore, the system's UI allows creators to explore and customize the simulated comments. Through a comprehensive evaluation-comprising quantitative analysis, crowd-sourced assessments, and qualitative user studies-we show that SimTube's generated comments are not only relevant, believable, and diverse but often more detailed and informative than actual audience comments, highlighting its potential to help creators refine their content before release.
Optimization of Imaging Parameters for SPECT scans of 99mTcTRODAT-1 Using Taguchi Analysis
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans using [99mTc]TRODAT-1 can image dopamine transporters and provide valuable diagnostic information of PD. In this study, we optimized the scanning parameters for [99mTc]TRODAT-1/SPECT using the Taguchi analysis to improve image quality. SPECT scans were performed on forty-five healthy volunteers according to an L9 orthogonal array. Three parameters were considered, including the injection activity, uptake duration, and acquisition time per projection. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was calculated from the striatum/occipital activity ratio as an image quality index. Ten healthy subjects and fifteen PD patients were used to verify the optimal parameters. The estimated optimal parameters were 962 MBq for [99mTc]TRODAT-1 injection, 260 min for uptake duration, and 60 s/projection for data acquisition. The uptake duration and time per projection were the two dominant factors which had an F-value of 18.638 (38%) and 25.933 (53%), respectively. Strong cross interactions existed between the injection activity/uptake duration and injection activity/time per projection. Therefore, under the consideration of as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) for radiation protection, we can decrease the injection activity to 740 MBq. The image quality remains almost the same for clinical applications.
The Presence of Diabetes Mellitus or Pre-diabetes Mellitus Increases Mortality from Heart Disease in a Taiwanese Population: A 10-year Follow-Up Study
Background We evaluated hyperglycemia-associated mortality in the Taiwanese population by conducting a 10-year retrospective cohort study. Methods: From 2007 to 2017, all participants, regardless of their age or underlying diseases, were identified at a Health Screening Center in Taiwan. Overall, 114,534 participants were included in the analysis. They were classified into three subgroups according to glycemia and smoking status by combining survival for data analysis. Results: The mean follow-up time, age, and body mass index (BMI) were 8.14 ± 2.22 years, 40.95 ± 12.14 years, and 23.24 ± 3.65 kg/m 2 , respectively. The cumulative death rate increased from 0.9% in the normal fasting blood glucose(FBG) subgroup to approximately 6% in the diabetes FBG subgroup. After adjusting for age, gender, BMI, high-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, waist circumference(WC), and smoking status, the hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause, cancer, and heart disease mortality in the diabetes mellitus(DM) subgroup was 1.560, 1.381, and 1.828, respectively.HR was 0.989 in all-cause, 0.940 in cancer, and 1.326 in heart disease in the pre-DM subgroup. Conclusion Being tested for pre-DM is related to a higher risk of death from heart disease in the Taiwanese population at baseline. Therefore, cardiovascular risk must be actively measured among diabetes patients every visit.
The Population Effective Dose of Medical Computed Tomography Examinations in Taiwan for 2013
To evaluate the annual effective dose per capita attributed to computed tomography (CT) examinations in 2013 and to predict the population effective dose from 2000 to 2013 in Taiwan. A CT examination database collected from 30 hospitals was divided into 22 procedures and classified into six regions: head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and other, respectively. The effective doses in different regions were evaluated by dose-length product (DLP) multiplied by conversion factors. The CT scan dose parameters were collected from 4,407 patients. For the six scanned regions, the percentages of patients scanned were: head (39.8%), neck (3.9%), chest (23.3%), abdomen (26.7%), pelvis (4.8%), and other (1.6%), respectively. The DLPs per patient (mGy·cm/patient) were head (1,071±225), neck (1,103±615), chest (724±509), abdomen (1,315±550), pelvis (1,231±620) and other (1,407±937), respectively. The number of CT examinations increased rapidly, with an average annual growth rate of 7.6%. The number of CT examinations in 2013 was 2.6 times that in 2000. The population effective dose was 0.30 mSv per capita in 2000 and increased to 0.74 mSv per capita in 2013, with an annual growth rate of 7.2%. The growth trend indicates that the effective dose will continue to rise in Taiwan. Some strategies should be applied to cope with this growth. Defining the CT dose reference level stipulated in official recommendations and encouraging the use of iterative reconstruction imaging instead of filtered back-projection imaging could be a useful method for optimizing the effective dose and image quality.
The Association between Serum Testosterone and Hyperuricemia in Males
Gout is a common systemic inflammatory disease with a male predominance. This study aimed to determine the relationship between serum total testosterone level and hyperuricemia. Data on 1899 men, collected from 2007 to 2017, were included in the analysis. Serum testosterone and urate (SU) were measured on enrolment. The primary endpoints were SU levels ≥ 7 mg/dL and ≥9 mg/dL. On enrolment, participants had a mean age of 45.6 years and mean total testosterone and SU levels of 510 ng/dL and 6.6 mg/dL, respectively. The mean total testosterone levels were 533 and 470 ng/dL in patients with SU levels < 7 mg/dL and ≥7 mg/dL, respectively (p < 0.001); and 515 and 425 ng/dL in patients with SU levels < 9 mg/dL and ≥9 mg/dL, respectively (p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, body mass index, creatinine, serum lipid, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure, low testosterone level (<400 ng/dL) was significantly associated with an SU level ≥ 7 mg/dL (hazard ratio: 1.182, 95% confidence interval: 1.005–1.39) and ≥9 mg/dL (hazard ratio: 1.905, 95% confidence interval: 1.239–2.928). In men, a low testosterone level may be associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia.
Cardiovascular Protection of Hydroxychloroquine in Patients with Sjögren’s Syndrome
Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is a chronic systemic inflammation disease with clinical presentation of dry eye, dry mouth, and polyarthralgia. Active inflammation is associated with an increased risk of associated arterial stiffness or subclinical atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular events. We used the longitudinal health insurance database of Taiwan, which includes one million participants, to evaluate the relationship between the clinical medication of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). In total, 1674 patients with SS receiving HCQ medication were included after exclusion for previous CAD. Altogether, 1142 SS patients were included for evaluation after follow-up for more than one year. After adjusting for age, gender, medications, and chronic comorbidities, a significantly decreased hazard ratio (HR) for developing CAD was found among SS patients with higher medication possession ratio (MPR) of HCQ (HR = 0.49, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.26–0.94) when compared with low MPR of HCQ. A low HR for CAD was observed in SS patients with a high cumulative dose of at least 100,267 mg of HCQ (HR = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.09–0.66). Long-term HCQ therapy may decrease the HR of CAD in SS patients. The significant cardiovascular protective effect of HCQ therapy was observed in our study.
