Vanadium dioxide has attracted much interest due to the drastic change of the electrical and optical properties it exhibits during the transition from the semiconductor state to the metallic state, which takes place at a critical temperature of about 68 °C. Much study has been especially devoted to developing advanced fabrication methodologies to improve the performance of VO

thin films for phase-change applications in optical devices. Films structural and morphological characterisation is normally performed with expensive and time consuming equipment, as x-ray diffractometers, electron microscopes and atomic force microscopes. Here we propose a purely optical approach which combines Polarized Raman Mapping and Phase-Transition by Continuous Wave Optical Excitation (PTCWE) to acquire through two simple measurements structural, morphological and thermal behaviour information on polycrystalline VO

thin films. The combination of the two techniques allows to reconstruct a complete picture of the properties of the films in a fast and effective manner, and also to unveil an interesting stepped appearance of the hysteresis cycles probably induced by the progressive stabilization of rutile metallic domains embedded in the semiconducting monoclinic matrix.

Urocanase is an enzyme in the histidine pathway encoded by the UROC1 gene. This report describes the first putative mutations, p.L70P and p.R450C, in the coding region of the UROC1 gene in a girl with urocanic aciduria presenting with mental retardation and intermittent ataxia. Computed (in silico) predictions, protein expression studies and enzyme activity assays suggest that none of the mutations can produce a fully functional enzyme. The p.L70P substitution, which probably implies the disruption of an α-helix in the N-terminus, would alter its properties and therefore, its function. The p.R450C change would render impossible any interaction between urocanase and its substrate and would loss its enzyme activity. Consequently, these studies suggest that both mutations could alter the correct activity of urocanase, which would explain the clinical and biochemical findings described in this patient.

Objective To describe a new phenotype associated with a novel variant in BAG3: autosomal dominant adult-onset distal hereditary motor neuronopathy. Methods This study enrolled eight affected individuals from a single family and included a comprehensive evaluation of the clinical phenotype, neurophysiologic testing, muscle MRI, muscle biopsy and western blot of BAG3 protein in skeletal muscle. Genetic workup included whole exome sequencing and segregation analysis of the detected variant in BAG3. Results Seven patients developed slowly progressive and symmetric distal weakness and atrophy of lower limb muscles, along with absent Achilles reflexes. The mean age of onset was 46 years. The neurophysiological examination was consistent with the diagnosis of distal motor neuronopathy. One 57-year-old female patient was minimally symptomatic. The pattern of inheritance was autosomal dominant, with one caveat: one female patient who was an obligate carrier of the variant died at the age of 73 years without exhibiting any muscle weakness. The muscle biopsies revealed neurogenic changes. A novell heterozygous truncating variant c.1513_1514insGGAC (p.Val505GlyfsTer6) in the gene BAG3 was identified in all affected family members. Conclusions We report an autosomal dominant adult-onset distal hereditary motor neuronopathy with incomplete penetrance in women as a new phenotype related to a truncating variant in the BAG3 gene. Our findings expand the phenotypic spectrum of BAG3-related disorders, which previously included dilated cardiomyopathy, myofibrillar myopathy and adultonset Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2 neuropathy. Variants in BAG3 should be considered in the differential diagnosis of distal hereditary motor neuronopathies.

2006
Maternal periodontal disease has been associated with an increased risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. In this randomized trial, nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis (including scaling and root planing) in pregnant women improved periodontal disease but did not significantly alter rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, or fetal growth restriction.

Recent studies suggest that periodontitis, an inflammatory disease caused primarily by gram-negative bacteria that destroy tooth-supporting connective tissue and bone, is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, as well as low birth weight and preeclampsia.

The Relationship Between Domain Specific Adolescent Stress in Five Domains and Depression: Rumination as a Moderator
2023
Prior to this study, understanding the impact of rumination as a moderating factor in predicting the interaction between specific domains of stress and adolescent depression remained largely unknown. Guided by the theoretical frameworks of response style theory of depression, control mastery theory, and diathesis stress model, the purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental study was to examine the link between five domains of adolescent stress (i.e., school, family, peers, appearance, and sports) and depression, the relationship between rumination and depression, and the moderating effect of rumination on these relationships. Participants included previously data collected from 635 adolescents from a midwestern U.S. city. Data were analyzed using correlations and multiple regression with moderation to address research questions regarding the extent to which each of the five domains of adolescent stress predicted depression in adolescence, the extent to which rumination predicted depression, and the extent to which rumination moderates these relationships. Results indicated that each domain of stress was correlated with depression, a significant relationship between rumination and depression in adolescence existed, and rumination moderated the relationship between stress and depression in family stress, peer stress, and appearance stress, with each increasingly related to depression as rumination levels increased. Rumination did not moderate the relation in school stress or sports stress. Findings support existing literature in that different domains of stress can differentially predict adolescent depressive symptoms. The implications for positive social change include the application of findings to targeted intervention strategies therapeutic techniques by specific domains of stress.

Marketing
2018
Almost 50% of small businesses close within 5 years in part because of inadequate marketing strategies. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore how landscape industry small business owners have successfully used social media marketing to help ensure business viability. The population for this study was landscape industry small business owners in central Alabama, who have been successful in using social media marketing. The conceptual framework for the study included adoption theory to understand the successful implementation of social media as a marketing tool, and social exchange theory to explain how social behavior results from the exchange process within social media. Data collection included semistructured interviews with 4 small business owner from the landscape industry and content analysis of the social media for 4 landscape industry small businesses. Data were alphanumerically and thematically coded. Analysis revealed 4 themes: (a) marketing strategy adoption; (b) primary social media types used; (c) social media content including aspects such as service, education, and holiday posts; and (d) benefits and challenges such as social media as a low-cost marketing option for improved visibility, but with a trial-and-error learning curve. Results may be used by small businesses to improve their long-term viability through social media marketing strategies, and to improve citizens’ quality of life and the local economy through increased tax revenues leading to more resources for schools, public safety organizations, and other institutions in the community.

Adoption of Innovation in Small-Scale Forestry: The Case of Portable-Sawmill-Based Microenterprises
Microenterprise development can be a valuable societal component not only in terms of filling important niche markets, but also by enhancing a society's wellbeing through creating opportunities available to people who are marginalized by the labor force for one reason or another. Forest microenterprises, in particular, can enhance rural community development efforts, as well as forest conservation goals, by empowering local people to successfully manage their resources as well as offer the possibility of income enhancement (Salafsky, Cordes, Leighton, Henderson, Watt, & Cherry, 1997; Lupo, 2012). This paper explores the adoption of portable-sawmill-based forest microenterprises. Key findings include common factors motivating portable sawmill adoption, as well as a bimodal adoption pattern, supporting previously postulated arguments regarding the importance of creating multiple adoption theories.
