Saving a Shared Asset
2008
Lake Erie, the recipient of waters from the Cuyahoga, Maumee, Grand, Huron, Chagrin, and many other tributaries, benefited tremendously from Clean Water Act regulations in the two decades following the law's passage. Various biological, chemical, and physical indicators provided positive evidence of the Clean Water Act's impact. However, these indicators began showing a decline in lake health in the mid-1990s, confounding the state's environmental scientists. The shift prompted a detailed study by the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, a coalition of state agencies established in 1990 to preserve Lake Erie's natural resources, enhance the quality of its waters and ecosystem, and promote economic development. Nonpoint source pollution was degrading Lake Erie. To help counter the threat of nonpoint source pollution, the commission published \"Ten Guiding Principles for a Sustainable Lake Erie Watershed\" in its 2000 Lake Erie Protection and Restoration Plan. Three of the 10 guiding principles explicitly addressed land-use planning and its relationship with the lake.

Immediate byelection hardly likely
1999
Also, that lame excuse that in the past, seats were empty for up to a year and no byelection was called. I don't know where the premier has been living in the past but it certainly wasn't P.E.I., because all seats were dual ridings unlike what is happening in Summerside right now in District 22 where now they have no representation in the legislature.

Ohio Communities Protect Their Great Lake Watersheds
2008
Various issues of Ohio communities related to the protection of their Great Lake watersheds, are discussed. The model treats the merits of development, conservation, and agriculture independently. Point sources can be readily identified and monitored, and responsible parties can be punished if they violate the Law. Freedom to create and decide provided empowerment and momentum for the pilot watersheds. Based on the feedback received from the individual pilot watersheds, it appears that watershed-based collaborative land-use planning has a future in Ohio. The threats to the health of Lake Erie and threats from flooding in their own backyards have stimulated a conversation about cooperative planning to protect water resources.
