Star violinist Nigel Kennedy and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato take to the stage to perform a wide range of popular pieces including Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending, Over the Rainbow and Danny Boy. The night also includes the world premiere of Anna Clyne's Masquerade, before closing with the traditional Last Night pieces.

2001
On 11th September 2001, the world witnessed the most horrific terrorist attack in history. 2001's Last Night of the Proms changed its plans and performed instead a tribute to the victims around the world. Of the traditional final sequence in the second half, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No.1, Henry Wood's Fantasia on British Sea-Songs, and Rule, Britannia! were replaced with John Adams' fanfare Tromba Lontana, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, Spirituals from Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time, and the Choral Finale from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

With final echoes of Shakespeare in works by Dvorak and Thomas Ades, and a rare revival for the anniversary of Elgar, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus are joined by a Russian soprano and an American violinist whose star qualities bring a fitting climax to this season, marking 80 years of the BBC's running of the Proms.
