BBC Proms. 2013, Last night of the Proms. Part 2
It's a year of changes for the final night of the BBC Proms. The grand finale of the world's most celebrated classical music festival is conducted by Marin Alsop, making her the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in its 119 year history. Star violinist Nigel Kennedy and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato take to the stage to perform a wide range of popular pieces including Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending, Over the Rainbow and Danny Boy. The night also includes the world premiere of Anna Clyne's Masquerade, before closing with the traditional Last Night pieces.

It's a year of changes for the final night of the BBC Proms. On 11th September 2001, the world witnessed the most horrific terrorist attack in history. 2001's Last Night of the Proms changed its plans and performed instead a tribute to the victims around the world. Of the traditional final sequence in the second half, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No.1, Henry Wood's Fantasia on British Sea-Songs, and Rule, Britannia! were replaced with John Adams' fanfare Tromba Lontana, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, Spirituals from Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time, and the Choral Finale from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

This year, an outstanding young American soloist makes her Proms debut on the Last Night alongside an internationally renowned British soprano, and a recently rediscovered piece of Shostakovich makes its first ever appearance. The composer of Pomp and Circumstance transcribes Bach and we bid farewell to Sir Andrew Davis at the end of his outstanding period at the helm of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Performances include Mozart's Violin Concerto No.4 in D, extracts from Strauss's Salome, and works from Grainger, Delius, Elgar and Henry Wood.
