\"The Global Response Force (GRF) is built for rapid response to unforeseen or, more specifically, unplanned operations. Selected Army airborne forces provide a large portion of the GRF and are dependent on joint concepts for deployment and access. This study illustrates a method for determining the best access strategies given constraints in aircraft, intermediate staging bases, operational capabilities, and other factors. The study applies this method to each geographic combatant command and develops specific, tailored strategies for each. The access strategies are built from multiple analytic techniques: historical aircraft data and platform specifications to determine capabilities and limitations of the air fleet; several airfield databases, site reports, and expert judgments to determine probable intermediate staging base locations and their likely capabilities; multiple deployment concepts for access to minimize operational risks; and detailed geographic and operational analysis to determine global coverage and reach. In the end, we were able to deduce a preferred strategy for each of the combatant commands. Global access for the GRF is provided partially through the use of well-established staging bases but will necessarily rely on austere basing and complex deployment concepts for particular locations in multiple combatant commands. The study concludes with several recommendations to close those risks, which span the services, combatant commands, and joint staff\"--Back cover.
Essential Law for Social Workers
Whether protecting their own rights or those of their clients, or navigating the juvenile justice, immigration, or welfare systems, social workers confront legal issues every day. This book explores legal concepts, legal reasoning, and legal processes—illustrated with case vignettes from social work practice—in order to provide social work practitioners and students with practical and accessible legal knowledge. It introduces readers to scholarship about the law and to conceptual knowledge that can be applied to any interaction with the legal system. Social workers are thereby enabled to \"think like a lawyer\" and increase their effectiveness. The volume features a discussion of recent reform movements, including Alternative Dispute Resolution, and an appendix of sources for legal information and research on the law.
Gatekeeping in BSW Programs
2000
Frustration provided the impetus for this book. Social work educators and field instructors often express unrelenting frustration with attempts to carry out their gatekeeping responsibilities. Spurred by a series of sessions and workshops on gatekeeping presented at annual conferences of the Association of Baccalaureate Program Directors (BPD) and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), in 1993 a group of volunteers from across the country decided to do something about this frustration by gathering information on the \"state of the art\" in social work education gatekeeping. This book grew out of the work of these social work educators, who proceeded with courage and determination into relatively uncharted waters. Because the history of this project's evolution is somewhat peculiar, as group efforts go, it seems well worth highlighting.
Social Work and the Law: A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Perspective
2003
Social workers in all practice areas are affected by interactions with the law and legal systems. Unfortunately, the profession has paid inadequate attention to education, scholarship, and practice in legal environments. This article introduces a new perspective for examining social work and the law called \"therapeutic jurisprudence,\" which emanates from psychology/mental health law. Therapeutic jurisprudence focuses on the therapeutic and antitherapeutic consequences of laws, legal rules, and legal actions. It provides a framework for assessing legal issues, applying social science research to legal questions, and structuring interventions in the legal environment. The authors argue that this perspective has the potential to serve as a lens through which social workers can view the law and, ultimately, use the knowledge gained to achieve better outcomes for clients.
