No checks and balances for bad police chiefs
Prior to the mandatory reporting of misconduct by the agency, officers who were guilty of anything -- ranging from brutality to violations of moral turpitude -- were given the option of resigning with no documentation in their personnel file. The agencies benefited by not having to litigate the dismissal and avoided the public embarrassment of the officer's actions. The officer would simply move on to another agency and continue the same behavior until he or she was caught again.
ADDERLEY, ROTHSTEIN LINK?
Like any other business leader, Chief [Frank Adderley] has a litany of duties. One of these is to serve as an advocate for organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and the Police Athletic League. These programs depend on donations from the community; soliciting prominent businessmen like [Scott Rothstein] is essential.
Crime-mapping system misleading in Hollywood
The people who voted for [Charlie Crist] when he was a Republican did so because he supported their views. But beware. Crist has started to flip-flop from his conservative views, to more liberal views of the Democrats. State Sen. [Nan Rich] is a Broward County resident and the most viable option for those seeking a solid, intelligent, accomplished candidate with true Democratic values. She doesn't have the funding that the Charlie Christ or Rick Scott machines have, but if there were a debate, she would gain the recognition she rightfully deserves. Let Broward State Attorney do job
Unless I'm mistaken, it is not the job of the Public Defender's Office to determine the status of a case put before prosecutors. Mr. [Howard Finkelstein] was not privy to the facts of the case, facts that indicated the case couldn't be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. His office was not involved in the proceedings at all. One March 12 letter writer disagrees with the opinions of Stephen Goldstein, so he calls him a \"worshiping fan of Joseph Goebbels of Nazi Germany,\" the organizer of German citizens' attacks on Jews and the minister of Nazi propaganda. Another letter writer disagrees with Gary Stein's article on pit bulls, so she calls him a \"complete idiot.\" I was disheartened, but not surprised, by the abysmal turnout in Tuesday's local South Florida elections. Michael Mayo's column, \"Apathy the biggest winner in March local elections,\" was right that \"all politics is local.\"
