Large Enhancement of the Luminescence Properties of an Eu(III) Dye upon Association with the DNA-CTMA Matrix
In this study, the photophysical properties of thin films of an Eu3+ dye, namely europium tetrakis(dibenzoylmethide) triethylammonium (EuD4TEA), within deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) biopolymer functionalized with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTMA) were extensively investigated and compared with those of thin films of the same dye embedded in more conventional polymers, like poly(methyl methacrylate) and polycarbonate. The new materials obtained have good optical properties, as shown by their absorption and emission spectra. Remarkably, a large enhancement in photoluminescence was observed upon the interaction of EuD4TEA with DNA-CTMA (2- and 17-fold increase in luminescence quantum yield with respect to PMMA and PC). Photophysical analyses suggest that the emission enhancement was mainly due to the increase in the sensitization efficiency (ηsens) from the ligands to the Eu3+ ion along with the suppression of the vibrational deactivation upon immobilization onto the DNA-CTMA matrix, as the concentration of the complex increased from 20 to 50%. These phenomena are primarily driven by the transformation of the Eu3+ micro-environments, which are created by the interactions between complex ligands and the DNA-CTMA matrix.
Fly Ash Waste Recycling by Pt/TiO2 Incorporation for Industrial Dye Removal
New materials are obtained by transforming fly ash wastes into a valuable composite, with tandem adsorption and photodegradation properties. Mild hydrothermal synthesis, from titanium dioxide, platinum nanoparticles and zeolite materials obtained from a waste, fly ash, as support, was involved in the composite preparation. The platinum nanoparticles extended the photocatalytic activity of the composite in visible range (Eg = 2.1 eV). The efficiency of tandem adsorption and photocatalytic activity of the new composite were determined to be 25% for Bemacid Blau and 43.89% for Bemacid Rot after 360 min, the irradiation time. The addition of H2O2 improves the process efficiency up to 80.70% and 93.43%, respectively. The Pt nanoparticle (PtNP) contribution led to the band gap energy change to Vis light (400 nm), thus suggesting the possibility of photocatalysis under the action of a fraction of natural light.

Research and Science Today No. 1(5)/2013
RESEARCH AND SCIENCE TODAY is a biannual science journal established in 2011. The journal is an informational platform that publishes assessment articles and the results of various scientific research carried out by academics. We provide the authors with the opportunity to create and/or perfect their science writing skills. Thus, each issue of the journal (two per year and at least two supplements) will contain professional articles from any academic field, authored by domestic and international academics. The goal of this journal is to pass on relevant information to undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students as well as to fellow academics and researchers; the topics covered are unlimited, considering its multi-disciplinary profile. Regarding the national and international visibility of Research and Science Today, it is indexed in over 30 international databases (IDB) and is present in over 200 online libraries and catalogues; therefore, anybody can easily consult the articles featured in each issue by accessing the databases or simply the website.

Influențe și confluențe în literatura română contemporană. I. Anchetă scriitori
\"Vatra\" magazine invites some writers to answer the following questions: 1. Which writers have influenced you? How have they stimulated your creativity? 2. What role do you attribute to cultural references in your creation (authors, literary works, music, TV series, etc.)? How much do you take into account the potentialities of cultural dialogue when you write? 3. Do you consider that your work is in a relationship of continuity or discontinuity with previous literary generations? 4. Do you consider that in current, extremely contemporary Romanian literature, we are still dealing with a subversive countermodel (imported, as in the case of the eighties, for example), or is it still necessary to mark a break with the literary tradition? 5. What would be the lines of major influences and confluences (internal and external), identifiable in current prose/poetry? Can they be unitarily systematized or are they, rather, heterogeneous? Can it be said that a certain literary genre is more susceptible to them, or that it has a higher degree of permeability?
