Geology and structure of the Tastiota-Himalaya region, eastern margin of the Gulf of California rift, coastal Sonora, Mexico
This work reports a new 1:50,000-scale geologic map of a portion of the Gulf of California rift along the central Sonoran coast in northwestern Mexico. Six chronostratigraphic units established by regional lithologic correlations are (1) Paleozoic (?) calcareous and clastic sedimentary and metasedimentary successions that represent isolated, rare roof pendants intruded by (2) Cretaceous granodiorite bodies. These pre-Neogene rocks are overlain by an extensive Miocene volcanic cover categorized into (3) Lower-Middle Miocene (21–15 Ma) porphyritic intermediate lavas; (4) a widespread distributed Upper Miocene (11–10 Ma) succession of felsic pyroclastic deposits, dikes, and lavas showing vertical and lateral lithofacies variations; (5) Upper Miocene (10–8.5 Ma) mafic volcanic lava flows; and (6) Pliocene to Recent colluvial and alluvial deposits. The structural architecture consists of a complex network of normal, oblique-normal, and strike-slip faults active during the Late Miocene and related to the early Gulf of California rift history.
Control of dopaminergic neuron survival by the unfolded protein response transcription factor XBP1
Parkinson disease (PD) is characterized by the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Although growing evidence indicates that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a hallmark of PD, its exact contribution to the disease process is not well understood. Here we report that developmental ablation of X-Box binding protein 1 (XBP1) in the nervous system, a key regulator of the unfolded protein response (UPR), protects dopaminergic neurons against a PD-inducing neurotoxin. This survival effect was associated with a preconditioning condition that resulted from induction of an adaptive ER stress response in dopaminergic neurons of the SNpc, but not in other brain regions. In contrast, silencing XBP1 in adult animals triggered chronic ER stress and dopaminergic neuron degeneration. Supporting this finding, gene therapy to deliver an active form of XBP1 provided neuroprotection and reduced striatal denervation in animals injected with 6-hydroxydopamine. Our results reveal a physiological role of the UPR in the maintenance of protein homeostasis in dopaminergic neurons that may help explain the differential neuronal vulnerability observed in PD.
Effects of the energy balance transition on bone mass and strength
Chronic positive energy balance has surged among societies worldwide due to increasing dietary energy intake and decreasing physical activity, a phenomenon called the energy balance transition. Here, we investigate the effects of this transition on bone mass and strength. We focus on the Indigenous peoples of New Mexico in the United States, a rare case of a group for which data can be compared between individuals living before and after the start of the transition. We show that since the transition began, bone strength in the leg has markedly decreased, even though bone mass has apparently increased. Decreased bone strength, coupled with a high prevalence of obesity, has resulted in many people today having weaker bones that must sustain excessively heavy loads, potentially heightening their risk of a bone fracture. These findings may provide insight into more widespread upward trends in bone fragility and fracture risk among societies undergoing the energy balance transition.
Cutting the Greenness Index into 12 Monthly Slices: How Intra-Annual NDVI Dynamics Help Decipher Drought Responses in Mixed Forest Tree Species
We studied the correspondence between historical series of tree-ring width (TRW) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI, i.e., greenness index) values acquired monthly over an entire year by unmanned aerial vehicles. Dendrochronological techniques revealed differentiated responses between species and seasonality. Pinus engelmannii Carrière and Juniperus deppeana Steudel were affected by warm temperatures (TMAX) during the winter prior to growth and benefited from precipitation (PP) during the seasons prior to the spring period. The standardized precipitation–evapotranspiration index (SPEI) confirmed the high sensitivity of P. engelmannii to drought (r = 0.7 SPEI). Quercus grisea Liebm. presented a positive association with PP at the beginning and end of its growth season. Monthly NDVI data at the individual tree level in the three species (NDVI ~0.37–0.48) statistically confirmed the temporal differences. Q. grisea showed a drastic decrease during the dry season (NDVI = 0.1) that had no impact on drought sensitivity in the same period, according to the climate-TRW relationship. We conclude that a relationship is plausible between the crown greenness index and radial growth, although more extended temporal windows of the NDVI should be explored. Differences in susceptibility to drought found among the species would presumably have implications for the composition of these forests under drought scenarios.
The Agroforestry Heritage System of Sabana De Morro in El Salvador
Traditional agroforestry systems are recognized as having great importance for providing multiple benefits for local communities all over the world, especially in tropical countries. Thanks to their multifunctional role, they can support small farmers, contribute to hydrogeological risk reduction, water regulation, preservation of soil, agrobiodiversity and landscape, as well as being examples of mitigation and adaptation towards climate change. The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) aims to identify agricultural systems of global importance, preserving landscape, agrobiodiversity and traditional knowledge, through dynamic conservation principles. The Sabana de Morro is a traditional agroforestry system located in El Salvador based on cattle grazing in pastures with the presence of Crescentia alata and Crescentia cujete trees, locally called Morro or Jícaro. We documented the main characteristics of this system, that has never been deeply studied, in the Municipality of Dolores, in accordance with the five GIAHS criteria, and through detailed land use mapping, to assess the relations between landscape structure, agrobiodiversity and traditional silvopastoral practices. Sabana de Morro proved to be based on strong interactions between trees, cattle and farmers. The pulp of the Morro fruits is eaten by grazing cattle, completing their feeding and giving a peculiar taste to the locally produced cheese. Morro trees provide shade for the animals while cattle contribute by spreading their seeds that also take advantage of the manure. Results show that this agroforestry system contributes to the preservation of a rich agrobiodiversity and of the traditional landscape. At the same time, it supports local farmers’ livelihood and is consistent with the aim of the GIAHS programme, even if further surveys and research are needed to assess the real possibility of the inclusion in this FAO programme.
Comparing Respondent-Driven Sampling and Targeted Sampling Methods of Recruiting Injection Drug Users in San Francisco
The objective of this article is to compare demographic characteristics, risk behaviors, and service utilization among injection drug users (IDUs) recruited from two separate studies in San Francisco in 2005, one which used targeted sampling (TS) and the other which used respondent-driven sampling (RDS). IDUs were recruited using TS ( n  = 651) and RDS ( n  = 534) and participated in quantitative interviews that included demographic characteristics, risk behaviors, and service utilization. Prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess whether there were differences in these variables by sampling method. There was overlap in 95% CIs for all demographic variables except African American race (TS: 45%, 53%; RDS: 29%, 44%). Maps showed that the proportion of IDUs distributed across zip codes were similar for the TS and RDS sample, with the exception of a single zip code that was more represented in the TS sample. This zip code includes an isolated, predominantly African American neighborhood where only the TS study had a field site. Risk behavior estimates were similar for both TS and RDS samples, although self-reported hepatitis C infection was lower in the RDS sample. In terms of service utilization, more IDUs in the RDS sample reported no recent use of drug treatment and syringe exchange program services. Our study suggests that perhaps a hybrid sampling plan is best suited for recruiting IDUs in San Francisco, whereby the more intensive ethnographic and secondary analysis components of TS would aid in the planning of seed placement and field locations for RDS.
Areal Interpolation Using Parcel and Census Data in Highly Developed Urban Environments
Areal interpolation is routinely used when spatial data are unavailable at desired geographical units. While many methods are available, few of them were developed specifically for and tested in highly developed urban cores. Even fewer studied subpopulation or population characteristics. This paper explores both issues using parcel map and decennial census data as ancillary information. Using census blocks as intermediate zones, the method first disaggregates source-zone data to intermediate zones, then disaggregates data to parcel level in intermediate zones intersecting target zones, and finally aggregates intermediate-zone and parcel-level estimates to obtain target-zone estimates. Compared to areal weighting and residential proportion, the proposed method is significantly more accurate. All three methods perform the best on population count, and worst on spatially clustered subpopulations such as black/African American population. Quotient variables are more difficult to interpolate than count variables. The research demonstrates the utility of parcel and decennial census data for areal interpolation in highly developed urban cores, and calls for future research on subpopulation and population characteristics.
Understanding Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia: An Umbrella Review of Scientific Evidence and Qualitative Content Analysis
Background and Objectives: Exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) is a topic of interest in the scientific community. This umbrella review aimed to analyze EIH research and compare it with public dissemination on X. Materials and Methods: We selected relevant EIH reviews that included a healthy population or patients with pain and studied exercise interventions. A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, SciELO, PEDro, and Google Scholar, employing the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome strategy. Data were extracted and summarized, and methodological quality was assessed with the Quality Assessment Scale for Systematic Reviews, and risk of bias with the Risk of Bias in Systematic Reviews tool. The Physical Activity Guidelines Advisor Committee was employed for evidence synthesis. Simultaneously, advanced X website searches gathered EIH-related content for analysis. Information from posts on X was qualitatively analyzed and contrasted with evidence in the literature. Results: We included nine systematic reviews and 17 narrative reviews. Systematic reviews presented high methodological quality. However, half had low risk of bias, while the other half presented high risk of bias. The EIH in healthy participants was controversial for some exercise modalities, such as aerobic exercise, and the influence of psychological variables. Modalities, such as isotonic resistance exercise, showed favorable effects on hypoalgesia. However, in patients with musculoskeletal pain, different exercise modalities did not generate EIH. X analysis unveiled a considerable representation of science-related content, although with prevalent misinterpretations of scientific evidence. Conclusions: EIH has been extensively studied, yet the certainty of evidence remains limited. While some exercise modalities demonstrate hypoalgesic effects in asymptomatic individuals, these effects remain unverified in patients with musculoskeletal pain. Moreover, the analysis of social media content highlights frequent misinterpretations of scientific evidence, particularly conflating hypoalgesia with analgesia. This underscores the need for more precise, evidence-based communication on social media platforms.
COVID-19 in people living with HIV: a single-center descriptive study
Introduction: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) may suffer more severe symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) due to their immunocompromised status, even if they are undetectable. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has been reported as an independent factor associated with higher mortality in patients with COVID-19. The present study aims to describe the clinical characteristics of PLHIV and COVID-19 in one center in Mexico. Methodology: We conducted an observational retrospective monocentric cohort study of PLHIV diagnosed with COVID-19 between 1 March 2020 and 30 April 2021. SARS-CoV-2 was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of a nasopharyngeal swab sample, clinical features, and epidemiological characteristics. Results: We identified 55 PLHIV with COVID-19. The median age was 36 years (IQR 25–41.5 years), and 54 patients were men. The median duration of HIV-1 infection was 4.3 years (Interquartile range, IQR 2.6–7.2 years), and 100% were on antiretroviral therapy (ART). The last HIV-1 RNA viral load analysis of the patients was 52/55 (94.5%) indicating that they were in virological suppression. The median CD4+ T-cell count was 734/mm3 (IQR 541.5-921/mm3). The most frequent pre-existing comorbidities found were obesity (21.8%), hypertension (7.2%), and diabetes (5.4%). Only one death was reported (1.8%). Conclusions: It has been reported that COVID-19/HIV/AIDS co-infection has a higher risk of mortality, admission to intensive care, and complications. However, our study found that people living with HIV-1 with adequate virological control did not present a severe course of COVID -19.
The multifunctional role of linear features in traditional silvopastoral systems: the sabana de morro in Dolores (El Salvador) and the pastures with carob trees in Ragusa (Italy)
Traditional agro-silvo-pastoral systems are becoming each day more important, representing multifunctional systems that can contribute to the preservation of agrobiodiversity and of traditional knowledge and associated culture, to the wellbeing of local communities and to sustainable development of rural areas, as testified by the increasing interest regarding the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Despite many researches on traditional agro-silvo-pastoral systems tend to focus only on land uses and land use changes, is also important to analyse the different features that characterize cultural landscapes, as well as to produce detailed spatial maps, in order to preserve and valorise these systems as a whole. The paper intends to compare two traditional silvopastoral systems in two different continents and environments: sabana de morro (El Salvador) and pastures with carob trees (Italy), considered as good example of biocultural diversity. Both these sites are characterized by extensive cattle breeding in a hot climate under the shade of trees, whose fruits can also integrate the animal diet. The study analyzed the traditional landscape structure, with particular attention to the presence of linear elements, that act as property divisions and as ecological corridors, contributing to biodiversity at landscape scale. Sabana de Morro is characterized by a complex system of hedges that enhances the variety of species, while an extensive network of dry-stone walls divides the Sicilian pastures with carob trees. These two different types of linear elements created thanks to the local farmers’ knowledge are made of different materials but can play a similar ecological and social function, acting as a division between one pasture and another, as a delimitation of property boundaries, and are necessary to allow a correct pasture management. Despite the differences, these two traditional linear features deeply characterize the landscape structure and fragmentation, creating important microhabitat for many animal and vegetal species and a network of ecological corridors. For these reasons the conservation of linear features should be promoted at planning level, as well as their restoration. Thanks to the applied methodology, it was possible to identify peculiarities and vulnerabilities of linear features and of the systems as a whole, so that it will be possible to create effective management and conservation tools.
