Role of Small-scale Impulsive Events in Heating the X-Ray Bright Points of the Quiet Sun
Small-scale impulsive events, known as nanoflares, are thought to be one of the prime candidates that can keep the solar corona hot at its multimillion-Kelvin temperature. Individual nanoflares are difficult to detect with the current generation of instruments; however, their presence can be inferred through indirect techniques such as Differential Emission Measure (DEM) analysis. Here, we employ this technique to investigate the possibility of nanoflare heating of the quiet corona during the minimum of solar cycle 24. We estimate the DEM of disk-integrated quiet Sun and X-ray bright points (XBP) using the observations from XSM on board the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter and AIA on board the Solar Dynamic Observatory. XBPs are found to be the dominant contributor to disk-integrated X-rays, with a radiative flux of ∼2 × 105 erg cm−2 s−1. XBPs consist of small-scale loops associated with bipolar magnetic fields. We simulate such XBP loops using the EBTEL hydrodynamic code. The lengths and magnetic field strengths of these loops are obtained through a potential field extrapolation of the photospheric magnetogram. Each loop is assumed to be heated by random nanoflares having an energy that depends on the loop properties. The composite nanoflare energy distribution for all the loops has a power-law slope close to −2.5. The simulation output is then used to obtain the integrated DEM. It agrees remarkably well with the observed DEM at temperatures above 1 MK, suggesting that the nanoflare distribution, as predicted by our model, can explain the XBP heating.
Men’s sheds as an alternative healthcare route? A qualitative study of the impact of Men’s sheds on user’s health improvement behaviours
Background Men’s health is a globally underrepresented area of research and policy. With men facing numerous healthcare barriers, there are calls for more ‘male friendly’ approaches to health improvement that take into consideration differing male behaviours and attitudes towards health. Men’s Sheds are community-based organisations delivering practical and social activities that encourage positive health behaviours. While Sheds have been recognised for their health and wellbeing benefits to men, research has yet to explore the impacts of Sheds on male health improvement and their potential role as a preventative gendered public health measure. Methods The study used in-depth interviews with 62 Shed members from five Sheds to investigate the impacts of Shed activity on the health improvement behaviours and attitudes of Shed users. Findings from the qualitative study were used to propose a set of pathways in which Sheds activity led to positive health engagement. Results The proposed pathways suggest that there are many different and interlinked ways in which Shed activities can impact on the health behaviours and attitudes of Shed users. Through participation in various practical and social activities in an inclusive environment, Shed users reported increases in their health seeking behaviours, improved perspectives on and management of their personal health, and an increased ability to overcome illness and recover. Conclusions Where male friendly health provision has been lacking, this study suggests how Men’s Shed activities can provide positive male health outcomes, often in unexpected and non-obvious ways. In particular, the proposed visual pathways are important to inform policymakers and practitioners of the ways in that Sheds may contribute to engaging men in health improvement practices and increase their health knowledge. This study also provides a structure from which further studies can measure and evaluate Shed health impacts.

Nonequilibrium Processes in the Solar Corona, Transition Region, Flares, and Solar Wind (Invited Review)
We review the presence and signatures of the non-equilibrium processes, both non-Maxwellian distributions and non-equilibrium ionization, in the solar transition region, corona, solar wind, and flares. Basic properties of the non-Maxwellian distributions are described together with their influence on the heat flux as well as on the rates of individual collisional processes and the resulting optically thin synthetic spectra. Constraints on the presence of high-energy electrons from observations are reviewed, including positive detection of non-Maxwellian distributions in the solar corona, transition region, flares, and wind. Occurrence of non-equilibrium ionization is reviewed as well, especially in connection to hydrodynamic and generalized collisional-radiative modeling. Predicted spectroscopic signatures of non-equilibrium ionization depending on the assumed plasma conditions are summarized. Finally, we discuss the future remote-sensing instrumentation that can be used for the detection of these non-equilibrium phenomena in various spectral ranges.

Evolution of Elemental Abundances in Hot Active Region Cores from Chandrayaan-2 XSM Observations
The first ionization potential (FIP) bias, whereby elemental abundances for low-FIP elements in different coronal structures vary from their photospheric values and may also vary with time, has been widely studied. In order to study the temporal variation and understand the physical mechanisms giving rise to the FIP bias, we have investigated the hot cores of three active regions (ARs) using disk-integrated soft X-ray spectroscopic observations with the Solar X-ray Monitor on board Chandrayaan-2. Observations for periods when only one AR was present on the solar disk were used to ensure that the AR was the principal contributor to the total X-ray intensity. The average values of temperature and emission measure were ∼3 MK and 3 × 1046 cm−3, respectively. Regardless of the AR’s age or activity, the elemental abundances for the low-FIP elements Al, Mg, and Si with respect to the soft X-ray continuum were consistently higher than their photospheric values. The average FIP bias for Mg and Si was 2–2.5, whereas the FIP bias for the mid-FIP element, S, was almost unity. However, the FIP bias for the lowest-FIP element, Al, was observed to be a factor of 2 higher than Si, which, if real, suggests a dependence of the FIP bias of low-FIP elements on their FIP value. Another major result from our analysis is that the FIP bias of these elements is established within ∼10 hr of emergence of the AR and remains almost constant throughout its lifetime.

Multiwavelength Observations of a B-class Flare Using XSM, AIA, and XRT
We present multiwavelength observations by Chandrayaan-2/Solar X-ray Monitor, Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, and Hinode/X-Ray Telescope (XRT) of a B-class flare observed on 2021 February 25, originating from an active region (AR 12804) near the northwest limb. The microflare lasts for ∼30 minutes and is composed of hot loops reaching temperatures of 10 MK. We report excellent agreement (within 20%) for the average effective temperatures obtained at the flare peak from all the three instruments, which have different temperature sensitivities. The XRT filter combination of Be-thin and Be-med provides an excellent opportunity to measure the high temperatures in such microflare events. The elemental abundances during the evolution of the microflare are also studied and observed to drop toward photospheric values at the flare peak time, compared to coronal values during the rise and decay phase. This is consistent with previous XSM studies.
