Shakespeare and Legs
Elise cupped her bare hands in front of her mouth and blew on them to warm them. Then she rubbed them quickly together, hoping that a little friction would take the numbness out of her fingertips. Before bending down to tighten the lace on her right skate, she stared out across the snow-covered expanse of the frozen bay. Elise had been so startled by the invitation, so pleasantly surprised, that it hadn't occurred to her to ask if they would be going alone, just the two of them, the way it had always been in the past. She had simply and delightedly said yes, and it wasn't until the doorbell rang and she'd flung the door open to find Laura and Antoine standing on the porch that she'd understood that this was not one of the good old days. Elise lived at the foot of Hillcrest Avenue, which ran right into Lakeside Drive. Walking to one side of Laura, with Antoine on the other side holding Laura's hand, Elise trudged unenthusiastically through the snow towards the bay. The threesome eventually crossed Lakeside Drive and climbed down a steep flight of stairs to what in the summertime was a mooring area for pleasure boats. Now, in the depths of February, the docks had long since been pulled out of the water and the vast bay stretched clear and downy white as far as the eye could see to where the snow-covered surface of the lake blended into pale, greyish clouds at the horizon.

Before bending down to tighten the lace on her right skate, she stared out across the snow-covered expanse of the frozen bay. Elise lived at the foot of Hillcrest Ave., which ran right into Lakeside Dr. They found a log that had been caught in the freeze and was now embedded in the ice, and sat down on it to change from boots to skates. Elise worked quietly while she listened to Laura chatter on about skating down to the village and stopping at Etienne's for hot chocolate. Etienne's was a tiny restaurant next to the grocery store opposite the village fire station. It was the one place open on Sunday afternoons and that was only because the bus stopped there. Etienne was a ticket agent for the bus line.

THE STEPFATHER GAME Series: BEDTIME STORIES
Earl Barron wasn't exactly in one of Montreal's best neighborhoods. Brynn thought most of the teachers it attracted were dinosaurs who didn't realize that the world had changed in the four or five decades since they'd been kids. And if they did know, they didn't care. Or they didn't like kids. Or they were burn-out cases who were teaching at Earl Barron because it was the only job they could get. Like The Weasel. The Weasel taught history. Actually, what The Weasel did was stand with his back to the class, copying out entire pages from the history text onto the blackboard. The students were then supposed to make their own copies in their notebooks, memorize it and spit it right back at him at Christmas, Easter and final exams. He never strayed from the text, and if the kids asked questions, The Weasel accused them of not having read the book, and made them copy out another chapter into their binders. Ruznek, the vice-principal. An equal opportunity pain in the butt. Ruznek didn't care what color you were or what church you went to, or even if you went to one. If you were a kid, he didn't like you. Kids didn't like him, either. The talk was that he'd been a corrections officer before turning to the administration of education. He reminded Brynn of those big German shepherds the cops used to sniff out shipments of heroin down at the docks. He kept his nose to the ground, sniffing for trouble and the kids who made it.
