When Proterozoic Crusts Became Thick: New Insights from Magma Petrology
The Earth’s continental crust represents the outermost envelope of the solid Earth, controlling exchanges within the geosphere and reflecting geodynamics processes. One of the fundamental issues of Earth Science aims to determine crustal thickness in past geodynamic environments in order to discuss the evolution of certain geodynamic processes through time. Despite presenting a continuing challenge, the evolution of crustal thickness during the last 3 billion years can be investigated using indirect clues yielded by the chemical signature of mafic magmas and associated ferromagnesian minerals (pyroxene, amphibole). Here, we present a new statistical assessment of a global database of magmatic and mineral chemical information. Analysis reveals the increasing occurrence of high-temperature pyroxenes and amphiboles growing in Ca-rich, Fe-poor magma since ~1 Ga, which contrasts with lower temperature conditions of minerals crystallization throughout the Meso- and Palaeoproterozoic times. This is interpreted to reflect temporal changes in the control of Earth’s crust on mantle-derived magma composition, related to changes in lithospheric thickness and mantle secular cooling. We propose that thick existing crust is associated with deeper, hotter magmatic reservoirs, potentially elucidating the mineral chemistry and the contrasting iron content between primary and derivative mafic magmas. Based on both the chemical and mineral information of mafic magma, an integrated approach provides qualitative estimates of past crustal thickness and associated magmatic systems. Our findings indicate that the Proterozoic was characterized by thicker crustal sections (>40–50 km) relative to the Phanerozoic and Archean (<35 km). This period of crustal thickening appears at the confluence of major changes on Earth, marked by the onset of mantle cooling and Plate Tectonics and the assembly of Columbia, the first supercontinent.
Paleoproterozoic gold events in the southern West African Craton: review and synopsis
The southern part of the West African Craton includes the Baoulé-Mossi Domain, the world’s premier Paleoproterozoic gold province (~10,000 metric ton gold endowment). Structural, metamorphic, and geochronological data suggest gold mineralisation occurred during three episodes that span much of the Eoeburnean and Eburnean orogenic cycles. Eoeburnean orogenic and rare skarn-hosted gold deposits formed between ca. 2200 and 2135 Ma during repeated episodes of volcanism, plutonism, and shortening, which thickened the Paleoproterozoic crust. Early Eburnean orogenic and placer gold deposits formed between ca. 2110 and 2095 Ma during inversion, metamorphism, and subsequent oblique shortening of intra-orogenic basins filled after ca. 2135 Ma. This episode of mineralisation terminated when the Baoulé-Mossi Domain docked with the Archean Kénéma-Man Domain at ca. 2095 Ma. Late Eburnean orogenic and less common intrusion-related gold deposits formed between ca. 2095 and 2060 Ma during strike-slip to oblique-slip tectonics, post-collisional high-K plutonism and crustal reworking across the western and southern Baoulé-Mossi Domain. Eoeburnean gold deposits include ca. 10 % of the gold endowment of the Baoulé-Mossi Domain, whereas the Early Eburnean and Late Eburnean deposits include ca. 50–70% and 20–40%, respectively. Here, we highlight the favourable confluence of accretion-collision tectonics, involving juvenile crust formation as well as protracted magmatic, metamorphic, and deformation histories that resulted in diachronous gold events spread over at least 100 myr throughout the Baoulé-Mossi Domain.
Integration by design: driving mineral system knowledge using multi-modal, collocated, scale-consistent characterisation
Recent decades have seen an exponential rise in the application of machine learning in geoscience. However, fundamental differences distinguish geoscience data from most other data types. Geoscience datasets are typically multi-dimensional, and contain 1D (drill holes), 2D (maps or cross-sections), and 3D volumetric and point data (models/voxels). Geoscience data quality is a product of the data's resolution and the precision of the methods used to acquire them. The dimensionality, resolution, and precision of each layer within a geoscience dataset translate into limitations to the spatiality, scale, and uncertainty of resulting interpretations. Historically, geoscience datasets were overlaid cartographically to incorporate subjective, experience-driven knowledge and variances in scale and resolution. These nuances and limitations that underpin the reliability of automated interpretation are well understood by geoscientists but are rarely appropriately transferred to data science. For true integration of geoscience data, such issues cannot be overlooked without consequence. To apply data analytics to complex geoscience data (e.g. hydrothermal mineral systems) effectively, methodologies that characterise the system quantitatively at a common scale, using collocated analyses, should be sought. This paper provides research and exploration insights from an innovative district-wide, scale-integrated geoscience data project, which analysed 1590 samples from 23 mineral deposits and prospects across the Cloncurry district, Queensland, Australia. Nine different analytical techniques were used, including density, magnetic susceptibility, remanent magnetisation, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, radiometrics, conductivity, automated mineralogy based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), geochemistry, and short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral data with 561 columns of scale-integrated data (+2151 columns of SWIR data). All data were collected on 2.2 cm × 2.5 cm sample cylinders, a scale at which the confidence in the coupling of data from techniques can be high. These data are integrated by design to eliminate the need to downscale coarser measurements via assumptions, inferences, inversions, and interpolations. This scale-consistent approach is critical to the quantitative characterisation of mineral systems and has numerous applications in mineral exploration, such as linking alteration paragenesis with structural controls and petrophysical zonation. The Geodynamic and Tectonic Evolution of the Palaeoproterozoic Sefwi Greenstone Belt, West African Craton
This thesis investigates the Palaeoproterozoic crust of the West African Craton in southwest Ghana, providing insight into its controversial geodynamic and tectonic evolution. Rocks of the study area comprise greenschist- to amphibolite facies, mafic to felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, high-grade paragneisses and low-grade volcano-sedimentary packages, all of which are extensively intruded by multiple generations of granitoids. New lithological, metamorphic and structural maps are constructed using integrated field mapping and interpretation of regional airborne geophysical datasets. This approach is used to constrain the deformation history of the sparsely exposed rocks of the NE- to NNE-striking Sefwi Greenstone Belt and the adjacent volcano-sedimentary domains deformed during the Eburnean Orogeny (2150–2070 Ma).Combined geochemical and geochronological analysis of the magmatic suites of the Sefwi Greenstone Belt reveal calc-alkaline, volcanic arc affinities, as well as a striking similarity to Neoarchean TTGs that require diverse magma sources and petrogenetic processes. Rare inherited zircon cores from the Palaeoproterozoic magmatic suite yield ages of ca. 2250 to 2270 Ma, with granitoid emplacement ages ranging between ca. 2189 and 2081 Ma. Zircon Lu-Hf analysis reveals consistently positive εHf(t) values and two-stage crustal model ages between 2650 and 2250 Ma, indicative of a radiogenic proto-crust and short crustal residence times. The magmatic evolution reveals the coeval generation of sodic, high-silica TTGs derived from partial melting of low-K mafic sources and dioritic magmas generated in a metasomatised, LILE-enriched mantle wedge at ca. 2155 Ma. Subsequent emplacement of high-K quartz monzonites at ca. 2136 Ma supports the interaction of mantle-derived magmas and remelting of existing TTGs. The final stage of magmatism is characterised by the emplacement of two-mica-granites and leucogranites along the NW margin of the Sefwi Greenstone Belt between ca. 2092 and 2081 Ma, interpreted as a terminal collisional event during the Eburnean Orogeny.Eburnean metamorphism and deformation is characterised in the study area by initial high-pressure amphibolite facies metamorphism corresponding with low apparent geothermal gradients (HP-MT, ~15–17°C/km). D1 NNW-SSE shortening generated a ubiquitous bedding-parallel foliation (S1) and ~E-W striking thrust faults, resulting in the burial of supracrustal rocks and crustal thickening. In the high-grade terrane, subsequent amphibolite-granulite facies metamorphism is associated with anatexis. In-situ SHRIMP U-Pb monazite ages at ca. 2073 Ma, hosted within, D2 mineral assemblages, are interpreted as the initial timing of cooling and exhumation, significantly later than paroxysmal metamorphism in NW Ghana and central Ivory Coast (2150–2130 Ma). NNE-striking normal detachments and constrictional deformation structures formed during sinistral ENW-WSW transtension (D2), during which segments of the middle- and lower crust were juxtaposed with low-grade domains. Subsequent E-W directed shortening (D3) caused the dextral re-activation of NE-SW striking shear zones, associated with a localised greenschist facies metamorphic overprint.We propose that the juvenile crust of southwest Ghana was generated in an intra-oceanic arc setting, associated with diverse and intense subduction-related magmatism until subsequent terrane accretion and collision. The north-western margin of the Sefwi Greenstone Belt in interpreted as a suture between the separate arc terranes, diachronously accreted during the Eburnean Orogeny. The Palaeoproterozoic crust of the southern portion of the West African Craton represents a juvenile crustal growth event, recording the unique geodynamic and orogenic processes associated with nascent subduction-related plate tectonics in the early Earth.
Political discourses of idealised masculinity: the risk management of male prisoners through work, education and family transitions
This thesis focuses upon the new rehabilitation of male prisoners within the context of idealised masculinity. Through the discourse analysis of written policy documents, this work addresses two fundamental questions: How is idealised masculinity constituted within political discourse and how does idealised masculinity influence the formulation of prison rehabilitation programmes? Idealised masculinity is defined as the heterosexual breadwinning role attributed to men as workers and providers for the family. It is this that is articulated within political discourses as a technique of government by which to reduce re-offending amongst the male prisoner population. Within the Foucauldian analysis of governmentality and Neo-Marxist theorising around Post-Fordism, idealised masculinity represent a form of governance that the state employs to inform its programme of managing the risks posed by offenders. This is evident through two particular pathways to reduce re-offending. Namely Pathway Two Education, Training and Employment and Pathway Six Children and Families. The argument presented is that current forms of punishment and imprisonment are characterised and defined within gender specific practices underpinned by the constitution of masculinity. The purpose of which is to reconstruct male prisoner’s attitudes and behaviour from that of deviant to non-deviant behaviour, from anti-social to pro-social values and through their moral and responsible reconstruction towards active, self-governing subjects. Thus the importance of maintaining family ties and the re-skilling and training of male prisoners to be able to compete within the labour market and obtain legitimate employment underpins political discourses surrounding penal concerns of the new rehabilitation. However governing at a distance and the state being unable or unwilling to place the children and family of offender’s on a formal footing and to effectively intervene to stimulate job creation activities within the labour market could mean that male prisoners are merely set up to fail.
Experiences of Sickness Absence Among Nhs Staff : a Grounded Theory Analysis
Reducing sickness absence and speeding up return to work following absence is usually beneficial for employees and organisations. However, current theory on sickness absence is not sophisticated enough to meaningfully inform policies which adequately promote employee wellbeing. This research aimed to explore employees’ decisions about taking sickness absence and returning to work and to identify factors which help employees to remain in or return to work. Two studies are presented. Study 1 was a systematic review evaluating the evidence that cognitive-behavioural (CBT) pain management improves work outcomes (return to work, sickness absence and hours worked) in employees with chronic pain. Fifteen studies were reviewed. A meta-analysis of a subgroup of four good or adequate quality studies showed no effect of intervention. Other high and adequate quality studies found no effect of intervention, with one exception. Lower quality studies lacked appropriate control groups, therefore conclusions could not be drawn about their effectiveness. Overall, insufficient evidence was found that CBT pain management improves vocational outcomes. Complex interventions, which target workplace and health issues, may be required. Study 2 was a grounded theory study of sickness absence among NHS staff in South Wales. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 18 employees. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Charmaz’s (2006) approach to grounded theory. A new process model of sickness absence is presented which goes beyond established theories. The establishment of the legitimacy of absence and its negotiation with others, particularly health professionals and managers, were core to the model. The absence process was complex, with different factors becoming important at different points in time, including the type and severity of illness; the work context; the employees’ beliefs about illness and work; their values and support. Line managers had a key role in managing absence but may require additional support and training. Health psychologists should now turn their attention to understanding the specific beliefs which are relevant to absence from work in order to further develop theories of sickness absence.
