Dual-Screen Television: Computational Analysis of Audience Attunement
2023
This research uses computational analysis of tweets to interpret audience response to televisual narrative. Audiences today turn to Twitter to share reactions during broadcast television; viewers form a community of fans, and also shape an online image through these mediated judgements. In particular, I focus on HBO’s Euphoria, which earned the status of most-tweeted about television show by garnering thirty-four million tweets during its second season alone. These responses morph the work into an assemblage of viewer response and viral content. Building on existing methods in the digital humanities, I formulate a novel way to computationally analyze what television, or cultural experiences generally, do in real-time: what feelings they set in motion in audiences, how audiences attune to these works, and how they self-cultivate via narrative. In pairing response analysis with a close reading of Euphoria, this thesis examines in Chapter One how audiences identify with character, and in Chapter Two how they emotionally respond to character and scene. Influenced by reader response theory and Rita Felski’s concept of attunement, it interrogates viewers’ character judgements. Utilizing affect theory and Silvan Tomkin’s model of emotional contagion, it studies how emotions can move between the work and its viewers. Finally, it discusses the jouissanceof tweeting while watching uncomfortable television, and what Twitter makes possible or forecloses in audience response. Television is the dominant entertainment medium of late capitalism, and this thesis aims to use computational tools to take a pulse on how spectorial pleasure manifests on the Internet

Written by authors with extensive experience of working with students with dyslexia, this book provides clear guidance and practical strategies for dyslexia-friendly practice for those working with young people aged 14 to 19 and adults in education or work-based training. Looking at how dyslexia impacts on learning, the authors suggest ways to improve the learning environment and explain how to help students develop the basic skills that will help them to make the transition from study to employment. Building on the latest research and understanding of dyslexia, they also consider overlapping syndromes, emotional and social issues, and funding.
Molecular structure and iodine oxidative-thermal decarbonylation of the seven-coordinate complex MoI2(CO)3(NCMe)2 to give the crystallographically characterised complex mer-MoI3(NCMe)3
1999
The X-ray crystal structure of the seven-coordinate complex [MoI2(CO)3(NCMe)2] (1) has been determined and shows discrete molecules. The geometry of the metal coordination sphere conforms to a distorted capped octahedron with a carbonyl group in the unique capping position. The capped face contains two carbonyl ligands and an iodo group, the uncapped face two MeCN ligands and an iodo group. The low temperature 13C n.m.r. spectrum (-70 °C, CD2Cl2) shows a single band at δ = 222.8 ppm, which suggests that the complex is rearranging more rapidly than the n.m.r. timescale at this temperature. Refluxing a 2:1 mixture of [MoI2 (CO)3(NCMe)2] and I2 in MeCN for 2h gives the crystallographically characterised molybdenum(III) complex mer-[MoI3(NCMe)3] (2) in quantitative yield.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

High yield synthesis, molecular structure and n.m.r. studies of the seven-coordinate complex WI2(CO)3(PEt3)2
1998
The reaction of [WI2(CO)3(NCMe)2] with two equivalents of PEt3 in Et2O/CH2Cl2 gives the MeCN-displaced product [WI2(CO)3(PEt3)2] (1) in high yield. The crystallographically determined solid state structure of (1) shows the complex to be capped octahedral with a carbonyl ligand capping an octahedral face containing the two octahedral carbonyls and one PEt3 group. The other face contains the two iodo ligands trans to carbonyl groups, and the second PEt3 ligand trans to the first PEt3 group. The low temperature (-30°C) 13C-{1H}-n.m.r. spectrum of (1) correlates with the solid state structure, and the fluxional properties of (1) have been investigated by VT 31P-{1H}-n.m.r.spectroscopy.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

That's My Pride Beneath the Love Train
2007
My reservations mounted. I could no longer take his eccentricities with a grain of salt by telling myself, ''He's just so free-spirited,'' or ''It's cute how he ditches social norms.'' Still, I chose to suppress them, throwing my standards out the window along with my cynicism. Romance had proved me wrong: it was real and it was here, begging me to appease it no matter how deplorable the circumstances. My ordinary sorrows felt utterly original to me, almost revolutionary. I spent an entire week (or so it seemed) crouching on street corners with my palms raised to the sky, thinking such novel thoughts as, ''No one will ever understand'' and ''This is the first time in history that pain like this has been felt by a human being.'' So I sang the lyric to his voice mail: ''Sweet summer days when I was feeling so fine, just you and me girl was a beautiful time. Oh yeah, said I felt so happy, my, my, my ...'' with the last ''my, my, my'' croaked out in an almost silent cry to make him pity me even more. I then called him 17 more times, relishing with each automated pickup the sound of his recorded voice.
