The Romantic Prostitute and her After-Life. Transfigurations of a Cliché
2023
There seems to be a consensus among researchers specializing in French literary Romanticism that the “Romantic prostitute” is akin to a cliché, described as a “recurring motif,” an “archetype,” and a “stereotype.” This article first discusses the conceptual and historical implications of this apparently shared understanding of the status of the literary Romantic prostitute. The article then raises a historical issue: although the figure of the prostitute is indeed omnipresent in the Romantic era, she is arguably not an invention or a product of this period. If the Romantic prostitute is an “archetype” and a cliché, it is also because she preceded the literary epoch of Romanticism. From Maria Magdalena to early modern prostitutes including Prévost’s Manon Lescaut, Rousseau’s Les Amours de Milord Edouard, or Restif de la Bretonne’s La Courtisane vertueuse, the romantic prostitute has a complex but evident literary prehistory. This article ponders whether the literary history of the Romantic prostitute extends beyond the Romantic period. It argues that this figure did indeed have a literary life after Romanticism, and offers a series of analyses of subsequent literary prostitutes, in works by authors ranging from Zola to Céline. These authors, while taking the Romantic prostitute as their template, also subjected her to political, sociological, and aesthetic mutations.

Flaubert's Love Topoi: The Aesthetics of Prostitution
2023
The article shows how Flaubert dismantles the notion of romantic love in L'Education sentimentale through a double use of traditional love topoi. Flaubert stages a number of literary scenes where romantic love usually is at large, scenes where authentic or spontaneous feelings of love historically have thrived. At the same time, he inserts unconventional elements into these scenes. In that way Flaubert not only disassembles the notion of romantic love but he also signals how post-romantic love can be reactivated through the idea of prostitution. The article then analyzes what consequences such a substitution has for the very notion of topos. It is argued that Flaubert's reworking of topoi can be theorized by way of a new, not rhetorical, but aesthetic idea of literary topology. The article identifies how Flaubert invents non-typical topoi, which rely on aesthetic meaning and not rhetorical verisimilitude.

The Romantic Prostitute and her After-Life. Transfigurations of a Cliché
2023
There seems to be a consensus among researchers specializing in French literary romanticism that the “romantic prostitute” comes close to being a cliché. She has been called “poncif,” an “archetype,” and a “stereotype.” This article first discusses the conceptual and historical implications of this seeming concord on the status of the literary romantic prostitute. The article then raises a historical issue: although the figure of the prostitute is indeed omnipresent in the romantic era, she is arguably not an invention or a product of this period. From Maria Magdalena to early modern prostitutes including Prévost’s Manon Lescaut , Rousseau’s Les Amours de Milord Edouard , or Restif de la Bretonne’s La Courtisane vertueuse , the romantic prostitute has a complex but apparent literary prehistory. This article wonders whether the romantic prostitute also had a literary history after romanticism. It argues that the romantic prostitute did have a literary life after romanticism and will accordingly make a series of analyses of ulterior literary prostitutes (from Zola to Céline) that have the romantic prostitute as a matrix whilst having her undergo both political, sociological, and aesthetic mutations.
