BackgroundThe root system plays a major role in plant growth and development and root system architecture is reported to be the main trait related to plant adaptation to drought. However, phenotyping root systems in situ is not suited to high-throughput methods, leading to the development of non-destructive methods for evaluations in more or less controlled root environments. This study used a root phenotyping platform with a panel of 20 japonica rice accessions in order to: (i) assess their genetic diversity for a set of structural and morphological root traits and classify the different types; (ii) analyze the plastic response of their root system to a water deficit at reproductive phase and (iii) explore the ability of the platform for high-throughput phenotyping of root structure and morphology.ResultsHigh variability for the studied root traits was found in the reduced set of accessions. Using eight selected traits under irrigated conditions, five root clusters were found that differed in root thickness, branching index and the pattern of fine and thick root distribution along the profile. When water deficit occurred at reproductive phase, some accessions significantly reduced root growth compared to the irrigated treatment, while others stimulated it. It was found that root cluster, as defined under irrigated conditions, could not predict the plastic response of roots under drought.ConclusionsThis study revealed the possibility of reconstructing the structure of root systems from scanned images. It was thus possible to significantly class root systems according to simple structural traits, opening up the way for using such a platform for medium to high-throughput phenotyping. The study also highlighted the uncoupling between root structures under non-limiting water conditions and their response to drought.

Abstract Fuzzy logic enables automated decision-making and classifies genotype suitability across environments. This study assessed the adaptability and stability of upland rice genotypes using fuzzy logic. To do so, eight lines from the Federal University of Goiás, 10 from the Federal University of Lavras, and two commercial cultivars were evaluated for grain yield, plant height, and flowering days in 13 environments in Goiás. The trials used a randomized complete block design with three replications. Adaptability and stability were analyzed using fuzzy controllers, which classified genotypes into four groups: general adaptability, poorly adapted, favorable, and unfavorable environments. The CSD 08004 line exhibited broad adaptability and stability for yield and plant height and was close to general adaptability for flowering days, making it suitable for cultivation in Goiás.

The common bean breeding program coordinated by Embrapa Arroz e Feijão released 50 new cultivars from 1984 to 2010. The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic progress in terms of seed yield and other agronomic traits achieved by the black-type common bean breeding program in Brazil over the 22-year period from 1985 to 2006. Two types of field experiments were performed to assess genetic progress. In regard to experiments on lines, the three best breeding lines from each of 11 evaluation cycles constituted 33 treatments. These evaluations were made in 20 environments and served to estimate progress in seed yield and seed size because these were the criteria applied in selecting the elite lines. Cultivar evaluations included nine cultivars recommended by Embrapa during the period under investigation, and the evaluations were established in 21 environments. These evaluations served to estimate improvements in reaction to angular leaf spot, plant architecture and tolerance to lodging because cultivars usually exhibit superior phenotypes for such characteristics. Evaluations were performed from 2008 to 2010. Estimated improvement in seed yield was 25.2 kg ha⁻¹ or 1.1 % per year. Improvements were also found in tolerance to lodging (1.7 % per year) and 100-seed weight (0.65 % per year). There was no significant progress for the plant architecture and resistance to angular leaf spot traits.

To attain success with selection process, the breeders need to understand the genetic variability into each population developed by breeding program. In this purpose, breeders need to estimate the variance components and genetic and phenotypic parameters. Besides, they need to have the ability to select simultaneously genetically top progenies for multiple traits. This study used a field trial, with a panel of 198 S0:2 lowland rice progenies, evaluated in three environments during two years in order to: (i) estimate genetic parameters for different traits in a rice breeding population, (ii) evaluate the impact of direct selection and selection performed through three selection indices in a rice population developed by recurrent selection, and (iii) compare three selection indices using different economic weights with direct and indirect selection. Significant genetic variation was found among progenies for: grain yield, plant height, days to flowering, panicle blast, leaf scald and grain discoloration. The direct selection provided high gains for single trait selection, but this method may results in undesirable changes in related traits. Thus, between the evaluated indices and in comparison, to indirect selection the Mulamba and Mock index provided simultaneously greater gains for all the evaluated traits. Furthermore, we found that when the random weights and b-variation index were used as economic weight, it was found lower gains or no gains, showing that the gains attained with Smith and Hazel and Tai indices were linked to economic weights used.

Choosing parents and segregating populations are fundamental steps for the success in plant breeding. For the common bean crop, the development of genotypes that combine favorable agronomic traits and seed quality may increase the chances of adopting new cultivars. This study aimed to select promising parents and segregating populations to develop slow seed-coat darkening lines, together with high grain yield, lodging tolerance and short seed cooking time after storage, as well as to investigate the relationship between seed-coat darkening and seed cooking time after storage. Twenty segregating populations (F3, F4 and F5 generations) and their parents were evaluated. The sum of ranks index for combined traits was used in the selection of superior populations. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between seed-coat darkening and cooking time after storage were estimated. Among the parents, the BRSMG Madrepérola cultivar was the most promising to generate lines with seedcoat darkening. The superior populations were BRSMG Madrepérola x IPR Saracura, BRSMG Madrepérola x BRS Sublime, BRSMG Madrepérola x BRS Estilo and BRSMG Madrepérola x BRS Notável. A linear relationship was not found between seed-coat darkening and seed cooking time after storage, indicating that the first trait is not an adequate indicator to infer about seed cooking time.

Common bean parents and populations resistant to white mold (WM, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) were selected based on estimates of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for WM severity in three field nurseries in Brazil. Twenty-seven populations were obtained by partial diallel crosses between parents from two groups: GI) three sources of partial resistance identified abroad and GII) nine Brazilian cultivars and elite lines. Populations were advanced in bulk up to the F6 generation. The overall mean of WM severity from combined analysis ranged from 2.83 to 5.03 (scale of 1 to 9 scores) in the F6 population. The score of the susceptible control BRS Requinte was 7.21. The GI parents K-59, in Oratórios, MG, and Viçosa, MG, and K-407 and PI204717, in Goianira, GO, contributed to increase resistance to WM. The most promising populations for obtaining elite lines resistant to WM were K-59/BRS Executivo, PI204717/BRS Campeiro, PI204717/Jalo Precoce, K-59/BRS Radiante, and K-407/BRS Cometa.

The final field trials to evaluate elite lines developed by the Embrapa national common bean breeding program generated a phenotypic database composed by agronomic traits of 84 elite lines and nine cultivars over a 16-year period (1993–2008) and 450 environments in all Brazilian growing areas. The main goal of this study was to use this database as a model to compare the consistency of the results obtained from indirect methods for genetic progress estimation for grain yield in common bean breeding, using the direct method as a reference. Three indirect methods for genetic progress estimation were evaluated: (1) linear regression with unadjusted averages, (2) linear regression with averages adjusted by the mixed models, and (3) linear regression with averages adjusted by a fixed effects model with the error exception. The genetic progress estimated by the direct method was 31.3 kg ha−1 per year (1.34%**). This value was considered as the reference estimate, since it was calculated using the grain yield data from final field trials with all common bean lines evaluated under the same environmental conditions. The estimate obtained using the regression with unadjusted averages of the three best lines by cycle was 25.66 kg ha−1 per year (1.26%*), similar to the result obtained by the direct method. Considering both methods using fixed and mixed models, the genetic gain estimates were statistically null (0.42% and 0.45%, respectively). Therefore, the regression method with unadjusted means was more informative than the other indirect methods.

Selecting appropriate donors and acquiring information about the genetic basis of inheritance is essential for breeding programs. In this study, a diallel cross was produced by crossing 15 progenies with five commercial lines of wide diversity for different rice traits (grain yield, plant height, days to flowering, panicle blast, brown spots, leaf scald, and grain discoloration) in an incomplete crossing design. The 20 parents and the 25 F2 crosses constituting the diallel cross were evaluated in a triple lattice design for different traits in a field test. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences between parents and their crosses for all traits, showing high variability. The general combining ability (GCA) and the specific combining ability (SCA) were significant, with a greater contribution of the SCA compared to GCA for the variation among crosses, indicating that non-additive effects were more prevalent for the traits evaluated. The results suggested that commercial lines such as IRGA 424 and BRS Catiana can be used to improve CNA 12T population.

The objectives of this study were to assess which environmental factors (local, season or years) are the most important to contribute for the interactions with genotypes of common black beans and to verify the existence of genotypes with broad and/or specific adaptation to the diverse planting seasons in Central Brazil. Data of grain yields for 13 genotypes in 18 field trials used for cultivar registration were utilized, across 2 years (2003 and 2004). Analyses of variance were carried out with decomposition of the genotype x environment interactions. Firstly, data of 18 trials were used, allowing a partial isolation of factors and, subsequently, eight trials were used to allow a complete isolation of the factors. The genotype x sowing seasons (R
2
= 4.2 %) and genotype x year (R
2
= 4.1 %) interactions were of the greatest important, while genotype x location was less important (R
2
= 3.0 %). It was concluded that is more important to conduct evaluations of genotypes in different seasons and years rather than in different locations. The majority of the genotypes tested presented specific adaptation, although it was possible to identify superior lines with wide adaptation.
