Film & Music: 'To call her voice angelic is to do her a disservice': The Decemberists' Colin Meloy on why Shirley Collins remains an inspiration
by
Meloy, Colin
2008
It's the voice that sings it, too. I think to call Shirley's voice angelic is to do it a disservice. There's no denying the high, pure beauty of her voice, but there's too much earth, too much dirt in it to call it angelic. It's also a voice completely its own; there's no other voice to match it. The folk revival on both sides of the Atlantic produced a lot of imitations, but Shirley's voice is a touchstone.

My Brightest Diamond
One of my absolute favorite records this year is called Bring Me the Workhorse, by Shara Worden, a.k.a. My Brightest Diamond. She plays in Sufjan Stevens' band, but this is her own record, and it's just fantastic.

MUSICIANS AND POLITICS IN 2008
2008
Election time is nearly upon us. And once again, disaffected citizens are calling for reform. Seven and a half years of George W. Bush's policies have led Americans of all stripes to anticipate the day of regime change in the United States, and, as usual, musicians are speaking out. As Under the Radar's Protest Issue is going to print, it looks like the presidential race will be pitting Illinois Senator Barack Obama against presumptive Republican nominee John McCain in the ultimate fighting championship of political discourse and a veritable shitstorm of confusion, dishonesty, and questioning. The artistic community is organizing in response, but politics is tricky business.
