Respiratory incidents in response to air quality deterioration in the summer and early autumn season
The paper presents the results of an ecological study completed within the warm seasonal period of 01/07/2024–31/10/2024. The aim is to assess the relationship between ambient air quality deterioration and acute respiratory incidents occurring in the inhabitants of Gliwice (Poland; Upper Silesian agglomeration). The number of daily medical services (MS) due to respiratory diseases and illnesses was obtained from the register of the National Health Fund (Silesian Voivodeship Branch in Katowice). The daily mean values of aerosanitary factors in Gliwice came from the mobile air pollution laboratory of the Silesian University of Technology in Poland. The relative risk ( RR ) of MS was estimated using a Poisson log-linear model considering independent environmental factors (meteorological factors and air pollutant concentrations) or confounding factors (astronomical season and day of the week). The highest number of MS due to respiratory diseases refers to acute nasopharyngitis and asthma exacerbation, mostly in children aged 0–9 years. A significant impact was observed in the case of particulate matter concentration increase and number of MS due to acute nasopharyngitis, laryngitis and tracheitis, pneumonia, asthma exacerbation, in the case of nitrogen oxides appropriately acute nasopharyngitis, bronchitis and/or bronchiolitis, pneumonia, asthma exacerbation. Additionally, a longer time of exposure was associated with a higher risk of MS due to respiratory incidents. The increase in wind speed and relative humidity was significantly associated with a higher number of bronchitis and asthma exacerbation while a higher temperature and higher 8-hour ozone concentration remain protective of both MS. The results are essential for effectively communicating environmental health risks, educating the public about potential threats, and pressuring legislators responsible for legislation and risk management.
Changes in the Fatty Acid Composition and Antioxidant Properties in Mono-Protein Commercial Dry Dog Foods During Storage
Dogs are the most popular companion animals in Europe, with an estimated population of 106 million in households. Commercial dry dog foods are formulated to meet specific nutritional requirements and ensure safety during storage, often through the addition of preservatives to extend shelf life. This pilot study investigated the antioxidant properties and changes in the fatty acid composition during storage in six mono-protein (containing only one source of animal protein) dry dog foods. These findings might contribute to a better understanding of the long-term nutritional stability of commercial dry dog foods and their potential implications for canine health. Changes in chemical composition, fatty acid profile, and antioxidant properties were analyzed immediately after opening the packages and after 3 and 6 months of storage. Significant alterations (p ≤ 0.05) were observed in nutrient content, particularly crude fat level (decrease from 18.37 g/100 g DM to 16.87 g/100 g DM after 6 months), as well as saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Antioxidant properties, assessed via DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS, fluctuated over the storage period. Principal component analysis identified distinct patterns in nutrient and antioxidant profiles, highlighting the impact of storage duration and initial food composition on the stability of nutritional and antioxidant properties. The research demonstrates that the quality of commercial dry dog foods, particularly regarding oxidative stability and antioxidant properties, is subject to change over time after opening. The chemical composition of the foods was influenced by storage duration, with significant decreases in crude fat and variations in fatty acid profiles.
The Role of Cosmetology in an Effective Treatment of Rosacea: A Narrative Review
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory facial skin disease usually occurring in middle-aged patients. It manifests itself as an inflammatory condition with perivascular infiltrate, dilated blood vessels, lymphoedema, hyperplasia of sebaceous glands, and disorders of connective tissue structures brought on by fibrosis. Rosacea is characterized by multifactorial inflammatory mechanisms, and therefore it requires an interdisciplinary approach including adequate skin care, topical and/or systemic therapy, and physical modalities to successfully treat the various symptoms and disease subtypes. However, data regarding the possible role of cosmetologists in rosacea remains scanty and equivocal. The objectives of cosmetology therapy include restoration and regeneration, anti-inflammatory effects, the strengthening of blood vessels and regulation of their permeability, and the regulation of keratinization. Vascular abnormalities can be targeted with specific light and laser devices. Therefore, the present paper aims to review the latest advances and summarize different aspects concerning skin care in rosacea. Particular attention has been paid to the co-operation of cosmetologists with other specialists in order to bring about the interdisciplinary management of rosacea. It is also important to keep in mind that it is usually necessary to combine various methods of treatment, as this approach is more effective than monotherapy for attaining satisfactory cosmetic results in rosacea patients.
Capacitors and catalyst supports based on pyrolytic carbon deposited on metals/metal oxides derived from hydrotalcite-like materials
The formation of carbon deposits by the pyrolysis of acetonitrile at 600 and 700 °C with the assistance of metals/metal oxides generated in situ from MgCuAl and MgFeAl hydrotalcite-like materials (HTs) is described. The effects of the chemical composition of the supports on the quantity of carbon deposits and their structural ordering, morphology, nitrogen doping, porosity and capacitive properties, as well as their function as catalyst supports, were investigated. Among obtained pyrolytic carbons, that built of platelet-shaped carbon particles (formed at 600 °C with the use of MgCuAl HTs) appeared to be the most effective for charge storage (150 F g −1 ) as it contained mainly micropores (62%) and slit-shaped mesopores favouring the charge storage in deep parts of the carbon particles. It was revealed that the pyrolytic carbon exhibiting plate-like morphology with high exposure of edge plane surfaces and high specific surface area (1121 m 2  g −1 ) provides the highest dispersion of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (HPW) and as a consequence leads to the highest yield (85%) to the main product ( cis -2-butene) of n -butanol conversion achieved for HPW loaded on it.
Personality traits of candidates for surgical treatment of obesity and their impact on long-term postoperative outcomes. A systematic review based on PRISMA protocol
The qualification process for patients seeking bariatric surgery includes various psychological evaluations, one of which is personality assessment. Previous literature reviews have focused mainly on the assessment of personality disorders. However, there remains a persistent need to distinguish between personality traits and to summarise the personality profiles of patients who achieve long-term positive results versus those who do not. In this systematic review, conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines, only personality traits and their long-term effects in the postoperative period were analysed with the use of various assessment methods. A total of 3,631 studies, published between 2018 and 2023, were screened, and 17 were included, reporting the data of 4,888 patients. The results of this systematic review lead to the conclusion that bariatric treatment candidates have higher levels of personality traits that are associated with mental health disorders after surgery, e.g. neuroticism or introversion. The results further indicate that long-term surgical outcomes can be predicted based on personality trait profiles. Specific trait patterns were identified that were linked to poorer surgical outcomes. However, the review illustrates that researchers around the world use a variety of methods and theoretical concepts to assess personality traits, making it currently impossible to establish a reproducible pattern of psychological assessment. The authors propose recommendations for psychological assessment in clinical practice.
