Religion, politics and jingle bells: examining contextual factors influencing the impact of workplace holiday practices
PurposeWhile Christmas and the holidays are widely celebrated in society at large in the US, the question arises whether doing so has value in today’s organizations. In this light, the present study examined the relationship of workplace holiday practices with positive affect and emotional engagement, along with some boundary conditions of these relationships. Specifically, this research examined the moderating influences of religious orientation, political orientation and political environment.Design/methodology/approachData were collected at two points in time via an online survey. At time 1, the participant survey included measures of workplace holiday practices, political orientation and demographic characteristics. At time 2 (approximately two weeks afterward), the participant survey included measures of positive affect and emotional engagement.FindingsWorkplace holiday practices were related to both positive affect and emotional engagement. There were slightly stronger effects for the impact of workplace holiday practices among individuals who reside in more conservative (“red”) states in the US on emotional engagement, but not positive affect. Individual political orientation did not moderate the relationships between workplace holiday practices and the outcomes. Counter to expectations, the absence of workplace holiday practices had a stronger negative effect on non-Christians’ emotional engagement than Christians. The interaction between workplace holiday practices and religious orientation with positive affect was nonsignificant.Research limitations/implicationsThe data from this research were obtained via a survey methodology. Although data on the independent and dependent variables were obtained at two different points in time, future research could experimentally manipulate features of the work environment related to the celebration of the holidays to more definitively establish cause-and-effect relationships.Practical implicationsThis research highlights the value of celebrating Christmas and the holidays. In this light, organizations should not underestimate the potential value of such celebratory activity in promoting employee goodwill. At the same time, organizations must be cognizant that some individuals may value the celebration of Christmas and the holidays more so than others.Originality/valueThis research provides a framework for further research on workplace holiday practices and identifies theories that can be used in future research to explore the mechanisms that influence how and under what conditions workplace holiday practices impact employees’ experiences at work.
Measuring Parent Rated Interest and Deprivation type Curiosity in Swedish Young Children - are they meaningfully distinct?
Proxy ratings of young children’s curiosity has the potential to be useful for research in Sweden. One such proxy rating is the parent-rating Interest/Deprivation Young Children scale. This scale has previously only been validated in Dutch samples, where it differentiated curiosity dimensions of interest (joyful exploration) and deprivation (reduction of aversive feelings of not knowing). The objective of this study was to investigate internal and construct validity of the Swedish version of the Interest/Deprivation Young Children scale. A translation of the Interest/Deprivation Young Children scale was conducted and then administered to 266 parents in Sweden, who rated their children (4-6-years old) on 10 items, with 5 items each for subscales of interest and deprivation dimensions of epistemic curiosity. Responses were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis. Results indicate acceptable internal reliability for deprivation-curiosity items (α = 0.78) and for interest-curiosity items (α = 0.79). For the combined scale score alpha was found good (α = 0.84). However, confirmatory factor analysis failed to differentiate interest and deprivation dimensions of curiosity. Item revisions are suggested which could be implemented for further investigations. Also, the possibility of using the I/D-YC total score as a more general measure of child curiosity is argued for. An open question is how other dimensions of curiosity might be more viable for proxy ratings of child curiosity.
Navigating in a hypercompetitive environment: the roles of action aggressiveness and TMT integration
Recognizing that both the hypercompetition and competitive dynamics research streams rely on Austrian economics and its idea of temporary advantage as an intellectual cornerstone, the present study merges these related, but thus far, disparate perspectives. It develops hypotheses that relate the intensity of the hypercompetitive environment and a firm's TMT dynamics to its action aggressiveness, or the volume and speed with which a firm engages its rivals. Using a survey-based sample of 104 Taiwanese firms, this study's findings show that the hypercompetitive environment and TMT sociobehavioral integration have direct and interacting effects on firms' action aggressiveness. Moreover, action aggressiveness is an important mediator between TMT integration and firm performance, particularly under hypercompetitive conditions. As such, the study contributes to our understanding of temporary advantage by revealing TMT integration and action aggressiveness as two essential organizational mechanisms for navigating in the hypercompetitive context. Finally, reflective of temporary advantage as a defining feature of hypercompetition, our findings show that performance variation is greater within this context. The article contributes to hypercompetition and competitive dynamics research by providing an integrated perspective of competitive behavior within the broad context of hypercompetitive environment, TMT dynamics, and firm performance.
Jean-Michel Basquiat
The exhibition covers the painter's whole career, from 1980 to 1988, focusing on 120 defining works. With the Heads from 1981-1982, gathered for the first time here, and the presentation of several collaborations between Basquiat and Warhol, the exhibition includes works previously unseen in Europe, essential works such as Obnoxious Liberals (1982), In Italian (1983), and Riding with Death (1988), as well as paintings which have rarely been seen since their first presentations during the artist's lifetime, such as Offensive Orange (1982), Untitled (Boxer) (1982), and Untitled (Yellow Tar and Feathers) (1982). At a young age, Jean-Michel Basquiat left school and made his first studio in the streets of New York. Very quickly, his painting achieved great success, which the artist both sought out and felt subjected to. His work refers back to the eruption of modernity, that of the expressionists, but his filiations are numerous. The acuteness of his gaze, his visits to museums, and the reading of a number of books gave him a real sense of culture. Yet his gaze was directed: the absence of black artists being painfully evident, the artist imposed the need to depict African American culture and revolts in equal measure in his work. Basquiat's death in 1988 interrupted a very prolific body of work, carried out in under a decade, with over one thousand paintings and even more drawings.--Fondation Louis Vuitton website.
A new external jugular venipuncture technique for efficient vascular access that exploits a murine anatomical variation
Vascular access in mice is a cornerstone of biomedical research, with peripheral venous approaches like the lateral tail vein, retrobulbar venous sinus, facial vein, and saphenous vein being common. However, central venous approaches are challenging due to animal size and required expertise. To address this, we developed the Sternoclavicular joint-Targeted External jugular venipuncture Method (STEM). This technique provides reliable, longitudinal vascular access for frequent blood sampling using palpable surface anatomy landmarks. Moreover, STEM eliminates the need for fur shaving, specialized restraints, or deep sedation, allowing a single operator to perform the procedure safely and efficiently. Our protocol, based on a comprehensive anatomical analysis, revealed that the external jugular vein in mice traverses anteriorly to the clavicle before draining into the subclavian vein – a key anatomical difference from humans. This finding enabled a refined technique using the sternoclavicular joint as a landmark, improving the success and reproducibility of central venous access. Finally, STEM facilitates efficient blood collection and accurate intravenous administration with minimal setup time. It is straightforward and easily replicable, allowing researchers of all expertise levels to achieve high precision and reproducibility. The simplified learning process and consistent results make STEM valuable for various mouse-based experiments in biomedical research.
Implantation of a vascular access button in mice
Vascular access presents unique challenges in experimental mice due to their small size and anatomical constraints. Achieving reliable vascular access is crucial for optimizing experimental outcomes, especially in protocols requiring serial blood sampling or repeated intravascular therapy. Although vascular access buttons (VABs) offer significant advantages, their widespread adoption has been limited by technical challenges and a lack of comprehensive validation regarding their safety, feasibility, and long-term management. To address these gaps, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of VAB implantation in mice. The technical success rate was 90.2%, and the 28-day survival rate was 80.4%. Optimal catheter insertion lengths determined by intraoperative and autopsy findings, and computed tomography were 9.5 ± 0.6 mm (20–25 g), 10.1 ± 0.8 mm (25–30 g), and 11.2 ± 0.5 mm (> 30 g), respectively. Catheter patency was analyzed by stratifying the cohort into groups based on physical parameters such as catheter tip geometry, heparin concentration in the maintenance solution, and frequency of catheter maintenance procedures. Although approximately half of the mice lost complete catheter patency by day 14, the majority maintained partial patency at day 28 in all experimental groups except for two cases of complete occlusion in the 2 Fr square tip, low-dose heparin, weekly maintenance group. The evaluation of biodistribution and clearance with indocyanine green indicated that VAB administration may have advantages over conventional venipuncture. These standardized methodologies can provide a framework for diverse biomedical research applications, enhancing both the efficiency and reproducibility of studies requiring reliable vascular access.
