The influence of preprocessing on text classification using a bag-of-words representation
Text classification (TC) is the task of automatically assigning documents to a fixed number of categories. TC is an important component in many text applications. Many of these applications perform preprocessing. There are different types of text preprocessing, e.g., conversion of uppercase letters into lowercase letters, HTML tag removal, stopword removal, punctuation mark removal, lemmatization, correction of common misspelled words, and reduction of replicated characters. We hypothesize that the application of different combinations of preprocessing methods can improve TC results. Therefore, we performed an extensive and systematic set of TC experiments (and this is our main research contribution) to explore the impact of all possible combinations of five/six basic preprocessing methods on four benchmark text corpora (and not samples of them) using three ML methods and training and test sets. The general conclusion (at least for the datasets verified) is that it is always advisable to perform an extensive and systematic variety of preprocessing methods combined with TC experiments because it contributes to improve TC accuracy. For all the tested datasets, there was always at least one combination of basic preprocessing methods that could be recommended to significantly improve the TC using a BOW representation. For three datasets, stopword removal was the only single preprocessing method that enabled a significant improvement compared to the baseline result using a bag of 1,000-word unigrams. For some of the datasets, there was minimal improvement when we removed HTML tags, performed spelling correction or removed punctuation marks, and reduced replicated characters. However, for the fourth dataset, the stopword removal was not beneficial. Instead, the conversion of uppercase letters into lowercase letters was the only single preprocessing method that demonstrated a significant improvement compared to the baseline result. The best result for this dataset was obtained when we performed spelling correction and conversion into lowercase letters. In general, for all the datasets processed, there was always at least one combination of basic preprocessing methods that could be recommended to improve the accuracy results when using a bag-of-words representation.

Wnt5a Signaling in Cancer
Wnt5a is involved in activating several non-canonical WNT signaling pathways, through binding to different members of the Frizzled- and Ror-family receptors. Wnt5a signaling is critical for regulating normal developmental processes, including proliferation, differentiation, migration, adhesion and polarity. However, the aberrant activation or inhibition of Wnt5a signaling is emerging as an important event in cancer progression, exerting both oncogenic and tumor suppressive effects. Recent studies show the involvement of Wnt5a in regulating cancer cell invasion, metastasis, metabolism and inflammation. In this article, we review findings regarding the molecular mechanisms and roles of Wnt5a signaling in various cancer types, and highlight Wnt5a in ovarian cancer.
Explaining long-term outcome trajectories in social–ecological systems
Improved knowledge of long-term social and environmental trends and their drivers in coupled human and natural systems is needed to guide nature and society along a more sustainable trajectory. Here we combine common property theory and experimental impact evaluation methods to develop an approach for analyzing long-term outcome trajectories in social-ecological systems (SESs). We constructed robust counterfactual scenarios for observed vegetation outcome trajectories in the Indian Himalaya using synthetic control matching. This approach enabled us to quantify the contribution of a set of biophysical and socioeconomic factors in shaping observed outcomes. Results show the relative importance of baseline vegetation condition, governance, and demographic change in predicting long-term ecological outcomes. More generally, the findings suggest the broad potential utility of our approach to analyze long-term outcome trajectories, target new policy interventions, and assess the impacts of policies on sustainability goals in SESs across the globe.
Reductions in global biodiversity loss predicted from conservation spending
Empirical two-part models describe the relationship between conservation spending, human development pressures and biodiversity loss and can inform sustainable development strategies by predicting the effects of financing decisions on future biodiversity losses. Conservation costs Financial investments into conservation are often held back by a lack of certainty over the benefits of spending more. Anthony Waldron and colleagues assess the impact of conservation spending on biodiversity between 1996 and 2008 in 109 countries that signed up to the Convention on Biological Diversity. They find that conservation spending over this period reduced national-level biodiversity loss by 29%, on average. They also find that the funding needed to achieve specific conservation goals rises with socioeconomic pressures. The authors develop a predictive model of biodiversity decline, which takes into account the effects of human development pressures and conservation financing. They propose that this could help to predict the funding that each country needs to achieve specific biodiversity policy goals, including those laid out in the Convention on Biological Diversity and the broader United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Halting global biodiversity loss is central to the Convention on Biological Diversity and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 1 , 2 , but success to date has been very limited 3 , 4 , 5 . A critical determinant of success in achieving these goals is the financing that is committed to maintaining biodiversity 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ; however, financing decisions are hindered by considerable uncertainty over the likely impact of any conservation investment 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 . For greater effectiveness, we need an evidence-based model 10 , 11 , 12 that shows how conservation spending quantitatively reduces the rate of biodiversity loss. Here we demonstrate such a model, and empirically quantify how conservation investment reduced biodiversity loss in 109 countries (signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity and Sustainable Development Goals), by a median average of 29% per country between 1996 and 2008 We also show that biodiversity changes in signatory countries can be predicted with high accuracy, using a dual model that balances the effects of conservation investment against those of economic, agricultural and population growth (human development pressures) 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 . Decision-makers can use this model to forecast the improvement that any proposed biodiversity budget would achieve under various scenarios of human development pressure, and then compare these forecasts to any chosen policy target. We find that the impact of spending decreases as human development pressures grow, which implies that funding may need to increase over time. The model offers a flexible tool for balancing the Sustainable Development Goals of human development and maintaining biodiversity, by predicting the dynamic changes in conservation finance that will be needed as human development proceeds.

Relative effects of black, purple, and green multiple-funnel traps on catches of arboreal and saproxylic beetles in forest understoreys
Trap colour can be an important consideration in detection programmes for arboreal and saproxylic beetles. Green and purple intercept traps are more attractive than black intercept traps to the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), an invasive species in North America. In four experiments, I tested three commercial multiple-funnel traps (green, purple, and black), baited with various lure blends, to determine the relative effects of trap colour on catches of other bark and woodboring beetles, and their associated predator species, in north–central Georgia, United States of America. I captured numerous species of Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) (n = 51), Curculionidae (Coleoptera) (n = 33), and associated predators (Coleoptera) (n = 22) across the four experiments. However, the majority of the species captured were either unaffected by trap colour or were caught in greater numbers in black and purple traps than in green traps. The two exceptions were the predators Enoclerus ichneumonus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) and Pycnomerus sulcicollis LeConte (Coleoptera: Zopheridae), which were more abundant in green traps than in black traps. Purple traps performed better than black traps for the following species: Cnestus mutilatus (Blandford) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Cossonus corticola Say (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Xylobiops basilaris (Say) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), Buprestis lineata Fabricius (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), and Namunaria guttulata (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Zopheridae).
