This study concerns the first urinary schistosomiasis case observed in Corsica (France, Europe) occurring in a 12-year-old German boy. The aim was to identify the relationship between this Schistosoma haematobium infection and other schistosomes of the Schistosoma group with terminal-spined ova. Morphological and molecular analyses were conducted on the ova. The results showed that the schistosome responsible for the emergence of schistosomiasis in Corsica was due to S. haematobium introgressed by genes from S. bovis.

Although schistosomiasis has been a public health issue in Gabon for nearly a century, little is known about its current transmission dynamics. We analyzed the chronobiology of 137 cercarial emission profiles of Schistosoma haematobium from Libreville, the capital of Gabon, located in an open area for schistosomiasis. We found that 88% of the cercariae were shed between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and that the average pattern was of circadian type, with the average peak at 1 p.m., and representing 27% of the total number of cercariae of the day. The rhythms of emergence may be associated with environmental pressures on the parasite, especially those related to their definitive hosts.
Bien que la schistosomose soit un problème de santé publique au Gabon depuis près d’un siècle, la dynamique actuelle de sa transmission est peu connue. Nous avons analysé la chronobiologie de 137 profils d’émission cercarienne de Schistosoma haematobium de Libreville, la capitale du Gabon, située dans une zone géographique ouverte pour la schistosomose. Nous avons trouvé que 88 % des cercaires étaient émises entre 11 heures et 15 heures et que le profil moyen était de type circadien, avec un pic moyen situé à 13 heures et représentant 27 % du nombre total de cercaires journalier. Les rythmes d’émergence sont associés aux pressions environnementales sur le parasite, particulièrement celles relatives aux hôtes définitifs.

Mosquito-Borne Arboviruses Occurrence and Distribution in the Last Three Decades in Central Africa: A Systematic Literature Review

Arboviruses represent a real public health problem globally and in the Central African subregion in particular, which represents a high-risk zone for the emergence and re-emergence of arbovirus outbreaks. Furthermore, an updated review on the current arbovirus burden and associated mosquito vectors is lacking for this region. To contribute to filling this knowledge gap, the current study was designed with the following objectives: (i) to systematically review data on the occurrence and distribution of arboviruses and mosquito fauna; and (ii) to identify potential spillover mosquito species in the Central African region in the last 30 years. A web search enabled the documentation of 2454 articles from different online databases. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) and the quality of reporting of meta-analyses (QUORUM) steps for a systematic review enabled the selection of 164 articles that fulfilled our selection criteria. Of the six arboviruses (dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV), yellow fever virus (YFV), Zika virus (ZIKV), Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), and West Nile virus (WNV)) of public health concern studied, the most frequently reported were chikungunya and dengue. The entomological records showed >248 species of mosquitoes regrouped under 15 genera, with Anopheles (n = 100 species), Culex (n = 56 species), and Aedes (n = 52 species) having high species diversity. Three genera were rarely represented, with only one species included, namely, Orthopodomyia, Lutzia, and Verrallina, but individuals of the genera Toxorhinchites and Finlayas were not identified at the species level. We found that two Aedes species (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus) colonised the same microhabitat and were involved in major epidemics of the six medically important arboviruses, and other less-frequently identified mosquito genera consisted of competent species and were associated with outbreaks of medical and zoonotic arboviruses. The present study reveals a high species richness of competent mosquito vectors that could lead to the spillover of medically important arboviruses in the region. Although epidemiological studies were found, they were not regularly documented, and this also applies to vector competence and transmission studies. Future studies will consider unpublished information in dissertations and technical reports from different countries to allow their information to be more consistent. A regional project, entitled “Ecology of Arboviruses” (EcoVir), is underway in three countries (Gabon, Benin, and Cote d’Ivoire) to generate a more comprehensive epidemiological and entomological data on this topic.

Baseline Mapping of Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis in the Northern and Eastern Health Regions of Gabon, Central Africa: Recommendations for Preventive Chemotherapy

In order to follow the Preventive Chemotherapy (PC) for the transmission control as recommended by WHO, Gabon initiated in 2014 the mapping of Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH). Here, we report the results of the Northern and Eastern health regions, representing a third of the land area and 12% of its total population. All nine departments of the two regions were surveyed and from each, five schools were examined with 50 schoolchildren per school. The parasitological examinations were realized using the filtration method for urine and the Kato-Katz technique for stool samples. Overall 2245 schoolchildren (1116 girls and 1129 boys), mean aged 11.28 ± 0.04 years, were examined. Combined schistosomiasis and STH affected 1270 (56.6%) with variation between regions, departments, and schools. For schistosomiasis, prevalence were 1.7% across the two regions, with no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the Northern (1.5%) and the Eastern (1.9%). Schistosomiasis is mainly caused by Schistosoma haematobium with the exception of one respective case of S. mansoni and S. guineensis. STH are more common than schistosomiasis, with an overall prevalence of 56.1% significantly different between the Northern (58.1%) and Eastern (53.6%) regions (p = 0.034). Trichuris trichiura is the most abundant infection with a prevalence of 43.7% followed by Ascaris lumbricoides 35.6% and hookworms 1.4%. According to these results, an appropriate PC strategy is given. In particular, because of the low efficacy of a single recommended drug on T. trichiura and hookworms, it is important to include two drugs for the treatment of STH in Gabon, due to the high prevalence and intensities of Trichuris infections.

We report human infections with Necator gorillae and Strongyloides fuelleborni, zoonotic helminths from nonhuman primates, in Gabon. We also detected a cryptic Ancylostoma species helminth. Infections occurred in settings of localized deforestation and environmental degradation, which increase human-animal contact. Surveillance to clarify the extent of human infections is needed.

Background
Rapid urbanization in Central African cities creates new habitats for larval mosquitoes and increases the risk of vector-borne diseases. In Libreville, Gabon, the ecological determinants and spatial distribution of these habitats are not well understood. This study assessed species diversity, environmental drivers, emergence success, and spatial risk patterns to inform vector control strategies.
Methods
Larval habitats were surveyed in three urban areas of Libreville during the dry and rainy seasons. Larvae were selected and placed in rearing tanks and emerged adults were identified morphologically. Larval habitat samples were analyzed for conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), temperature, redox potential, turbidity, and proximity to dwellings. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to explore the associations between environmental variables and species composition. Logistic regression identified the determinants of larval emergence success. Spatial risk was mapped using inverse distance weighting (IDW).
Results
A total of 1909 larvae from 18 species across 5 genera were recorded. Larval abundance differed significantly between seasons with higher count recorded during the dry season (Wilcoxon rank-sum test:

= 0.0169). RDA explained 23.5% of the variation in species, with conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) identified as key drivers.
Aedes
species were found to prefer low-mineralized waters, whereas
Culex
and
Anopheles
species were found to be associated with ion-rich habitats. Emergence success increased with water temperature (around 33 °C) and redox potential. However, the rainy season was associated with a slight decrease in emergence probability compared with dry season, although it was not statistically significant (
P
= 0.084). Spatial analysis revealed heterogeneous risk, with hotspots near the airport, Okala, and Alibandeng. No major differences were found between artificial and natural habitats.
Conclusions
Urban larval mosquito communities in Libreville exhibit strong seasonal and environmental structuring, with defined breeding hotspots. Conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS) predict assemblage composition, while temperature and habitat stability affect emergence. Integrating ecological and spatial analyses provides valuable insight for targeted vector control in Central African cities.

Background
This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution of
Anopheles
mosquito larval habitats and the environmental factors associated with them, as a prerequisite for the implementation of larviciding.
Methods
The study was conducted in December 2021, during the transition period between the end of the short rainy season (September–November) and the short dry season (December-February). Physical, biological, and land cover data were integrated with entomological observations to collect
Anopheles
larvae in three major towns: Mitzic, Oyem, and Bitam, using the \"dipping\" method during the transition from rainy to dry season. The collected larvae were then reared in a field laboratory established for the study period. After the
Anopheles
mosquitoes had emerged, their species were identified using appropriate morphological taxonomic keys. To determine the influence of environmental factors on the breeding of
Anopheles
mosquitoes, multiple-factor analysis (MFA) and a binomial generalized linear model were used.
Results
According to the study, only 33.1% out of the 284 larval habitats examined were found to be positive for
Anopheles
larvae, which were primarily identified as belonging to the
Anopheles gambiae
complex. The findings of the research suggested that the presence of
An. gambiae
complex larvae in larval habitats was associated with various significant factors such as higher urbanization, the size and type of the larval habitats (pools and puddles), co-occurrence with
Culex
and
Aedes
larvae, hot spots in ambient temperature, moderate rainfall, and land use patterns.
Conclusions
The results of this research mark the initiation of a focused vector control plan that aims to eradicate or lessen the larval habitats of
An. gambiae
mosquitoes in Gabon's Woleu Ntem province. This approach deals with the root causes of malaria transmission through larvae and is consistent with the World Health Organization's (WHO) worldwide objective to decrease malaria prevalence in regions where it is endemic.

Could pooled samples method affect SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis accuracy using BGI and Sansure-Biotech RT-PCR kits used in Gabon, Central Africa?

This study aims at establishing specimens pooling approach for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 using the RT-PCR BGI and Sansure-Biotech kits used in Gabon. To validate this approach, 14 positive samples, stored at -20°C for three to five weeks were analyzed individually (as gold standard) and in pools of five, eight and ten in the same plate. We created 14 pools of 5, 8 and 10 samples using 40 μL from each of the selected positive samples mixed with 4, 7 and 9 confirmed negative counterparts in a total volume of 200 μL, 320 μL and 400 μL for the pools of 5, 8 and 10 respectively. Both individual and pooled samples testing was conducted according to the BGI and Sansure-Biotech RT-PCR protocols used at the Professor Daniel Gahouma Laboratory (PDGL). Furthermore, the pooling method was also tested by comparing results of 470 unselected samples tested in 94 pools and individually. Results of our experiment showed that using a BGI single positive sample with cycle threshold (Ct) value of 28.42, confirmed by individual testing, detection occurred in all the pools. On the contrary samples with Ct >31 were not detected in pools of 10 and for these samples (Ct value as high as 37.17) their detection was possible in pool of 8. Regarding the Sansure-Biotech kit, positive samples were detected in all the pool sizes tested, irrespective of their Ct values. The specificity of the pooling method was 100% for the BGI and Sansure-Biotech RT-PCR assays. The present study found an increase in the Ct values with pool size for the BGI and Sansure-Biotech assays. This trend was statistically significant (Pearson’s r = 0.978; p = 0,022) using the BGI method where the mean Ct values were 24.04±1.1, 26.74±1.3, 27.91±1.1 and 28.32±1.1 for the individual, pool of 5, 8 and 10 respectively. The testing of the 470 samples showed that one of the 94 pools had a positive test similar to the individual test using the BGI and Sansure-Biotech kits. The saving of time and economizing test reagents by using the pooling method were demonstrated in this study. Ultimately, the pooling method could be used for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 without modifying the accuracy of results in Gabon. We recommend a maximum pool size of 8 for the BGI kit. For the Sansure-Biotech kit, a maximum pool size of 10 can be used without affecting its accuracy compared to the individual testing.

Background/Objectives: Antibiotic-resistant bacteria pose a significant global public health threat that demands serious attention. The proliferation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is primarily attributed to the overuse of antibiotics in humans, livestock, and the agro-industry. However, it is worth noting that antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) can be found in all ecosystems, even in environments where antibiotics have never been utilized. African great apes (AGAs) are our closest living relatives and are known to be susceptible to many of the same pathogens (and other microorganisms) as humans. AGAs could therefore serve as sentinels for human-induced AMR spread into the environment. They can potentially also serve as reservoirs for AMR. AGAs inhabit a range of environments from remote areas with little anthropogenic impact, over habitats that are co-used by AGAs and humans, to captive settings with close human–animal contacts like zoos and sanctuaries. This provides opportunities to study AMR in relation to human interaction. This review examines the literature on AMR in AGAs, identifying knowledge gaps. Results: Of the 16 articles reviewed, 13 focused on wild AGAs in habitats with different degrees of human presence, 2 compared wild and captive apes, and 1 study tested captive apes alone. Ten studies included humans working with or living close to AGA habitats. Despite different methodologies, all studies detected AMR in AGAs. Resistance to beta-lactams was the most common (36%), followed by resistance to aminoglycosides (22%), tetracyclines (15%), fluoroquinolones (10%), sulphonamides (5%), trimethoprim (5%), macrolide (3%), phenicoles (2%) and fosfomycin (1%). Conclusions: While several studies suggest a correlation between increased human contact and higher AMR in AGAs, resistance was also found in relatively pristine habitats. While AGAs clearly encounter bacteria resistant to diverse antibiotics, significant gaps remain in understanding the underlying processes. Comparative studies using standardized methods across different sites would enhance our understanding of the origin and distribution of AMR in AGAs.

The freshwater snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi is the main intermediate host of human intestinal Bilharziasis. It is widely distributed in Africa, Madagascar and middle-eastern countries, and its habitat includes wetlands, and arid to semi-arid areas. Based on analysis of 18 microsatellites, we investigated reference allelic variation among 30 populations of B. pfeifferi from three drainage basins in Dhofar, Oman (the eastern limit of its distribution). This is an arid to semi-arid region, with a 9,000-year history of very low rainfall, but is subject to unpredictable and destructive flash floods. In this context we showed that genetic fixation was very high compared to genetic differentiation which was moderate and, that, relative to B. pfeifferi populations from wetlands, the populations in Dhofar show evidence of lower levels of genetic diversity, a higher degree of genetic fixation, a quasi-absence of migration, and a higher level of genetic drift. Despite the extreme conditions in the Dhofar habitat of this species, it is able to survive because of its very high self-fertilization (approaching 100 %) and fecundity rates.
