Mustelids and other terrestrial carnivores use communal latrines where feces and urine serve as olfactory cues for territory demarcation and intraspecific communication. These strong scent cues may also influence the broader vertebrate community, either acting as an attractant for species in search of food or as a warning of predator presence. To investigate these effects, we compared vertebrate diversity, richness, and use characteristics at giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) latrine sites to background levels within Taiamã Ecological Station and surrounding areas in the Brazilian Pantanal. We deployed 35 motion‐activated camera traps across two sessions from August 2021 to November 2022. Giant otters were observed at 10 camera sites, and we observed the initiation of seven latrines. This allowed us to implement a Before‐After Control‐Impact (BACI) design, comparing each site after latrine initiation to both pre‐latrine initiation and to control sites. Across all sites, we recorded 2593 vertebrate detections, including 743 giant otter records. Species richness was slightly higher at latrine sites, but diversity decreased using indices emphasizing evenness, indicating increased dominance by a few common species. Vertebrate activity, especially among scavenging birds such as southern crested caracaras (Caracara plancus), black vultures (Coragyps atratus), and lesser yellow‐headed vultures (Cathartes burrovianus), increased significantly following latrine establishment. We documented southern crested caracaras consuming feces, sometimes while the otters were still at the latrine, highlighting latrines as transient but important food resources. While community composition did not differ significantly between latrine and control sites, these findings suggest that giant otter latrines can temporarily reshape vertebrate activity patterns and reduce community evenness. As giant otter populations continue to recover, the ecological significance of their latrines may increase, with implications for species interactions and species monitoring in the Neotropics.

Accurately estimating home range and understanding movement behavior can provide important information on ecological processes. Advances in data collection and analysis have improved our ability to estimate home range and movement parameters, both of which have the potential to impact species conservation. Fitting continuous-time movement model to data and incorporating the autocorrelated kernel density estimator (AKDE), we investigated range residency of forty-four jaguars fit with GPS collars across five biomes in Brazil and Argentina. We assessed home range and movement parameters of range resident animals and compared AKDE estimates with kernel density estimates (KDE). We accounted for differential space use and movement among individuals, sex, region, and habitat quality. Thirty-three (80%) of collared jaguars were range resident. Home range estimates using AKDE were 1.02 to 4.80 times larger than KDE estimates that did not consider autocorrelation. Males exhibited larger home ranges, more directional movement paths, and a trend towards larger distances traveled per day. Jaguars with the largest home ranges occupied the Atlantic Forest, a biome with high levels of deforestation and high human population density. Our results fill a gap in the knowledge of the species' ecology with an aim towards better conservation of this endangered/critically endangered carnivore-the top predator in the Neotropics.

Energetic subsidies between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems can strongly influence food webs and population dynamics. Our objective was to study how aquatic subsidies affected jaguar (Panthera onca) diet, sociality, and population density in a seasonally flooded protected area in the Brazilian Pantanal. The diet (n = 138 scats) was dominated by fish (46%) and aquatic reptiles (55%), representing the first jaguar population known to feed extensively on fish and to minimally consume mammals (11%). These aquatic subsidies supported the highest jaguar population density estimate to date (12.4 jaguars/100 km²) derived from camera traps (8,065 trap nights) and GPS collars (n = 13). Contrary to their mostly solitary behavior elsewhere, we documented social interactions previously unobserved between same-sex adults including cooperative fishing, co-traveling, and play. Our study demonstrates that aquatic subsidies, frequently described in omnivores, can also transform the ecology and behavior of obligate carnivores.

Although considered an evolutionary force responsible for shaping ecosystems and biodiversity, fires’ natural cycle is being altered by human activities, increasing the odds of destructive megafire events. Here, we show that forest type modulates the responses of terrestrial mammals, from species to assemblage level, to a catastrophic megafire in the Brazilian Pantanal. We unraveled that mammalian richness was higher 1 year after fire passage compared to a pre-fire condition, which can be attributed to habitat modification caused by wildfires, attracting herbivores and open-area tolerant species. We observed changes in assemblage composition between burned/unburned sites, but no difference in mammalian richness or relative abundance. However, by partitioning the effects of burned area proportion per forest type (monospecific vs. polyspecific), we detected differential responses of mammals at several levels of organization, with pronounced declines in species richness and relative abundance in monospecific forests. Eighty-six percent of the species presented moderate to strong negative effects on their relative abundance, with an overall strong negative effect for the entire assemblage. Wildfires are predicted to be more frequent with climate and land use change, and if events analogous to Pantanal-2020 become recurrent, they might trigger regional beta diversity change, benefitting open-area tolerant species.

Safety, efficacy, and quality of life outcomes of pulsed field ablation in Japanese patients with atrial fibrillation: results from the PULSED AF trial

Background
Pulsed field ablation (PFA), a novel treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF), has yet to be evaluated in a Japanese cohort.
Methods
In this sub-analysis of the PULSED AF trial, 12-month outcomes of paroxysmal AF (PAF) and persistent AF (PsAF) patients treated with PFA in four Japan centers were assessed. After a 90-day blanking period, primary efficacy was determined via freedom from a composite endpoint of acute procedural failure, arrhythmia recurrence, or antiarrhythmic drug escalation over 1 year. Patient improvement was evaluated via two quality of life (QoL) surveys (AFEQT and EQ-5D) at baseline and 12 months.
Results
The analysis included 32 patients, 16 PAF and 16 PsAF, with PAF patients averaging 61.1 ± 10.6 years and PsAF patients averaging 62.8 ± 11.5 years of age. Females made up 31% of PAF and 25% of PsAF cohorts. Acute pulmonary vein isolation was achieved in 100% of both cohorts. The primary efficacy success rate at 12 months was 75.0% for PAF and 56.3% for PsAF patients. No primary safety events occurred. Conclusions
Similar to outcomes in the global cohort, ablation with the PulseSelect™ PFA catheter was efficient, effective, and safe in a Japanese population, resulting in improved QoL for PAF and PsAF patients.

) were captured, and rectal swabs were collected in the Pantanal of Cáceres, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction specific for noroviruses was performed. Six jaguars (66.6%) tested positive for norovirus genotype GII.11.
