Skin cancer classification based on an optimized convolutional neural network and multicriteria decision-making
Skin cancer is a type of cancer disease in which abnormal alterations in skin characteristics can be detected. It can be treated if it is detected early. Many artificial intelligence-based models have been developed for skin cancer detection and classification. Considering the development of numerous models according to various scenarios and selecting the optimum model was rarely considered in previous works. This study aimed to develop various models for skin cancer classification and select the optimum model. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in the form of AlexNet, Inception V3, MobileNet V2, and ResNet 50 were used for feature extraction. Feature reduction was carried out using two algorithms of the grey wolf optimizer (GWO) in addition to using the original features. Skin cancer images were classified into four classes based on six machine learning (ML) classifiers. As a result, 51 models were developed with different combinations of CNN algorithms, without GWO algorithms, with two GWO algorithms, and with six ML classifiers. To select the optimum model with the best results, the multicriteria decision-making approach was utilized to rank the alternatives by perimeter similarity (RAPS). Model training and testing were conducted using the International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) 2017 dataset. Based on nine evaluation metrics and according to the RAPS method, the AlexNet algorithm with a classical GWO yielded the optimum model, achieving a classification accuracy of 94.5%. This work presents the first study on benchmarking skin cancer classification with many models. Feature reduction not only reduces the time spent on training but also improves classification accuracy. The RAPS method has proven its robustness in the problem of selecting the best model for skin cancer classification.
Audit committee and impression management in financial annual reports: evidence from Jordan
PurposeThe current paper aims at exploring the audit committee characteristics’ effect on impression management.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology is based on the use of the content analysis of financial annual reports, as data of a 69-company sample study from 2015 to 2019 attained from “Amman Stock Exchange” has been analyzed. Moreover, multiple regression analysis on panel data was employed.FindingsThe results show that the independence of the audit committee, the financial expertise of the audit committee and female members negatively affect impression management, implying that these characteristics mitigate financial reporting manipulation and decrease the practices of impression management. However, the findings detect no significant influence for committee meetings on impression management.Research limitations/implicationsNotably, the current work is applicable and useful for understanding the audit committee’s role in enhancing the financial reporting’s quality, along with the significance of the audit committee in growing the stakeholder’s confidence in financial reporting. In light of these results, regulatory bodies’ efforts are encouraged to create additional strategies and instructions to ensure the trustiness and credibility of financial reporting.Originality/valueThis paper will be useful to companies that want to improve the quality of financial reporting and decrease the impression of management’s effect on financial reporting’s readers. Moreover, this paper contributes to the literature on impression management by exploring the effect of audit committees on impression management of annual financial reports of the users in the context of emerging markets and Middle East countries, particularly Jordan.
Utilization of Detection of Non-Speech Sound for Sustainable Quality of Life for Deaf and Hearing-Impaired People: A Systematic Literature Review
Several assistive technologies (ATs) have been manufactured and tested to alleviate the challenges of deaf or hearing-impaired people (DHI). One such technology is sound detection, which has the potential to enhance the experiences of DHI individuals and provide them with new opportunities. However, there is a lack of sufficient research on using sound detection as an assistive technology, specifically for DHI individuals. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to shed light on the application of non-verbal sound detection technology in skill development for DHI individuals. This SLR encompassed recent, high-quality studies from the prestigious databases of IEEE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science from 2014 to 2023. Twenty-six articles that met the eligibility criteria were carefully analyzed and synthesized. The findings of this study underscore the significance of utilizing sound detection technology to aid DHI individuals in achieving independence, access to information, and safety. It is recommended that additional studies be conducted to explore the use of sound detection tools as assistive technology, to enhance DHI individual’s sustainable quality of life.
Clinical, Biochemical and Molecular Evaluations of Ivermectin Mucoadhesive Nanosuspension Nasal Spray in Reducing Upper Respiratory Symptoms of Mild COVID-19
Ivermectin is an FDA-approved broad-spectrum anti-parasitic agent that has been shown to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication . We aimed to assess the therapeutic efficacy of ivermectin mucoadhesive nanosuspension intranasal spray in treatment of patients with mild COVID-19. This clinical trial included 114 patients diagnosed as mild COVID-19. Patients were divided randomly into two age and sex-matched groups; group A comprising 57 patients received ivermectin nanosuspension nasal spray twice daily plus the Egyptian protocol of treatment for mild COVID-19 and group B comprising 57 patients received the Egyptian protocol for mild COVID-19 only. Evaluation of the patients was performed depending on improvement of presenting manifestations, negativity of two consecutive pharyngeal swabs for the COVID-19 nucleic acid via rRT-PCR and assessments of hematological and biochemical parameters in the form of complete blood counts, C-reactive protein, serum ferritin and d-dimer which were performed at presentation and 7 days later. Of the included patients confirmed with mild COVID-19, 82 were males (71.9%) and 32 females (28.1%) with mean age 45.1 ± 18.9. In group A, 54 patients (94.7%) achieved 2 consecutive negative PCR nasopharyngeal swabs in comparison to 43 patients (75.4%) in group B with P = 0.004. The durations of fever, cough, dyspnea and anosmia were significantly shorter in group A than group B, without significant difference regarding the duration of gastrointestinal symptoms. Duration taken for nasopharyngeal swab to be negative was significantly shorter in group A than in group B (8.3± 2.8 days versus 12.9 ± 4.3 days; P = 0.0001). Local use of ivermectin mucoadhesive nanosuspension nasal spray is safe and effective in treatment of patients with mild COVID-19 with rapid viral clearance and shortening the anosmia duration. Design, Synthesis, and Docking Study of Acyl Thiourea Derivatives as Possible Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors with a Novel Zinc Binding Group
Histone deacetylase inhibitors with zinc binding groups often exhibit drawbacks like non-selectivity or toxic effects. Thus, there are continuous efforts to modify the currently available inhibitors or to discover new derivatives to overcome these problems. One approach is to synthesize new compounds with novel zinc binding groups. The present study describes the utilization of acyl thiourea functionality, known to possess the ability to complex with metals, to be a novel zinc binding group incorporated into the designed histone deacetylase inhibitors. N-adipoyl monoanilide thiourea (4) and N-pimeloyl monoanilide thiourea (5) have been synthesized and characterized successfully. They showed inhibition of growth of human colon adenocarcinoma and mouse hepatoblastoma cells with low cytotoxic effect against normal human breast cells. Their binding mode to the active site of several histone deacetylases has been studied by docking and the results gave a preliminary indication that they could be successful histone deacetylase inhibitors.
