PurposeThe purpose of this study is to identify the uses of Industry 4.0 technologies in the area of education and how they contribute to learning in addition to highlighting at what educational level they are used.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was carried out in the Scopus (Elsevier), Web of Science and ScienceDirect (Elsevier) databases, starting in 2011. In total, 51 articles were selected for a quantitative analysis, and 23 of them were read to answer the questions of the research from a qualitative analysis.FindingsThe results show a greater use of augmented reality, simulation, Internet of Things and virtual reality. The level of education at which they are most present is higher education. They collaborate to increase immersion in content, student engagement, interpersonal interaction, reduce costs and risks, simulate real work scenarios, expand study possibilities, without limited time and space, develop soft skills and learn about technologies, their uses and modes of operation. It is concluded that the technologies of Industry 4.0 support the entire learning process, but they are not used as much as they should. They are still largely restricted to universities and courses related to manufacturing. It is hoped that this work can contribute to the development of Education 4.0 at all stages of teaching.Originality/valueReviews have already been carried out on the use of technologies in teaching. The originality of this work is in the fact that it focuses on Industry 4.0 technologies in the Education 4.0 scenario.

Optimizing routes of municipal waste collection: an application algorithm

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to formulate an algorithm designed to discern the optimal routes for efficient municipal solid waste (MSW) collection.Design/methodology/approachThe research method is simulation. The proposed algorithm combines heuristics derived from the constructive genetic algorithm (CGA) and tabu search (TS). The algorithm is applied in a municipality located at Southern Brazil, with 40,000 inhabitants, circa.FindingsThe implementation achieved a remarkable 25.44% reduction in daily mileage of the vehicles, resulting in savings of 150.80 km/month and 1,809.60 km/year. Additionally, it reduced greenhouse gas emissions (including fossil CO2, CH4, N2O, total CO2e and biogenic CO2) by an average of 26.15%. Moreover, it saved 39 min of daily working time.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research should thoroughly analyze the feasibility of decision-making regarding planning, scheduling and scaling municipal services using digital technology.Practical implicationsThe municipality now has a tool to improve public management, mainly related with municipal solid waste. The municipality reduced the cost of public management of municipal solid waste, redirecting funds to other priorities, such as public health and education.Originality/valueThe study integrates MSW collection service with an online platform based on Google MapsTM. The advantages of employing geographical information systems are agility, low cost, adaptation to changes and accuracy.

Rice-based biocomposites: the influence of the rice husk granulometry on physical and biodegradation properties of rice bran matrix biocomposites

Our study presents an innovative material for application in the construction of biocomposites produced from agro-industrial by-products, constituted by the matrix of 70% raw rice bran, reinforced with 15% of rice husk fibers of different particle sizes (> 1 mm, > 500 µm, > 250 µm and < 250 µm) and 15% glycerol as a plasticizer. The materials were manually mixed and then molded by thermal compression in a hydraulic press with heating using a tray format. The molded parts were submitted to tests of biodegradability, contact angle, water absorption and impact resistance. The obtained results showed the influence of the incorporation of the rice husk fibers in the improvement of the evaluated properties when compared to the biocomposite produced only with rice bran. The different particle sizes of the rice husk fibers used in this study presented minor influence on the evaluated properties. Nevertheless, it should be noted that biocomposites with grain sizes > 250 µm and < 500 µm showed significant improvements, such as greater impact performance, higher initial contact angle and minor mass losses in composting experiments.

Health Service waste is the environmental liability, coming from the various health services whose characteristics may endanger human health or ecosystems. The methodology applied was a questionnaire for all those responsible for the sectors and nursing team, which aimed to identify the level of knowledge regarding the issues of waste management, evaluation and management analysis. As a quality tool for assessing the impacts of management, the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action), GUT (Gravity, Urgency, Trend) and 5W2H (What, When, Why, Where, Who, How, How Much). It was observed in the studied area that there is a lack of information regarding the generation of waste and this contributes to an inadequate management of RSS, which can cause risks to the worker, public health and the environment. Considering the use of quality tools, qualitative, quantitative and management aspects, it was possible to gather data to elaborate a strategy that results in an improvement in the management of this waste. This improvement is outlined in line with the guidelines of the current legislation and as a basis the principle to make the processes involved in executing RSS management more clear and agile. The results obtained were able to generate contributions to the definition of programs and projects, focusing on actions monitored, mitigated and avoided, and based on scientific and technical bases, aim at the protection of the employees of this hospital, the preservation of public health, preservation of natural resources and environmental preservation.
Resíduos de Serviço de Saúde são os passivos ambientais, provenientes dos vários serviços de saúde cujas características podem determinar perigo à saúde humana ou aos ecossistemas. A metodologia aplicada foi de questionário para todos os responsáveis dos setores e equipe de enfermagem o que objetivou identificar o nível de conhecimento em relação às questões do manejo de resíduos, avaliação e análise do gerenciamento. Como ferramenta de qualidade para a avaliação dos impactos do gerenciamento foi utilizada o PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action), GUT (Gravidade, Urgência, Tendência) e 5W2H (What, When, Why, Where, Who, How, How Much). Constatou-se na área estudada que há carência de informações quanto à geração de resíduos e isso contribui para um gerenciamento inadequado de RSS, o qual pode causar riscos ao trabalhador, à saúde pública e ao meio ambiente. Considerando-se o uso das ferramentas de qualidade, os aspectos qualitativos, quantitativos e de gerenciamento, foi possível reunir dados para elaboração de uma estratégia que resulte em uma melhora na gestão destes resíduos. Esta melhora esta delineada em consonância com as diretrizes da legislação vigente e como base o princípio tornar mais claros e ágeis os processos envolvidos na execução da gestão dos RSS. Os resultados obtidos foram capazes de gerar contribuições para a definição de programas e projetos, focando as ações monitoradas, mitigadas e ou evitadas, e a partir de bases científicas e técnicas, visar a proteção dos funcionários deste hospital, a preservação da saúde pública, a preservação de recursos naturais e a preservação ambiental.
Residuos de Servicio de Salud son los pasivos ambientales provenientes de los varios servicios de salud, cuyas características pueden determinar peligro a la salud humana o a los ecosistemas. La metodología aplicada fue la de cuestionario para todos los responsables de los sectores y equipo de enfermería, lo que objetivó identificar el nivel de conocimiento en relación a las cuestiones del manejo de residuos, evaluación y análisis del gerenciamiento. Como herramienta de cualidad para la evaluación de los impactos del gerenciamiento, fue utilizada el PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action), GUT (Gravedad, Urgencia, Tendencia) y 5W2H (What, When, Why, Where, Who, How, HowMuch). Se constató en el área estudiada que hay carencia de informaciones cuanto a la generación de residuos y, eso, contribuye para un gerenciamiento inadecuado de RSS, el cual puede causar riesgos al trabajador, a la salud pública y al medio ambiente. Considerándose el uso de las herramientas de cualidad, los aspectos cualitativos, cuantitativos y de gerenciamiento, fue posible reunir datos para la elaboración de una estrategia que resulte en una mejora en la gestión de estos residuos. Esta mejora está delineada en consonancia con las directrices de la legislación vigente y, como base, el principio de tornar más claros y ágiles los procesos envueltos en la ejecución de la gestión de los RSS. Los resultados obtenidos fueron capaces de generar contribuciones para la definición de programas y proyectos, enfocando las acciones monitoreadas, mitigadas y o evitadas, y a partir de bases científicas y técnicas, visar la protección de los funcionarios de este hospital, la preservación de la salud pública, la preservación de recursos naturales y la preservación ambiental.

Optimizing municipal solid waste collection management through data mining: a case study in southern Brazil

This study presents three models based on urban solid waste collection data from three municipalities in southern Brazil to identify collection patterns. With the support of Knowledge Discovery in Databases and Data Mining techniques and algorithms, historical data on the weight of unloaded waste from collection trucks in transfer stations, collection route data, and socio-demographic and climate data were used to predict the amount of solid waste collected at each point and assess collection patterns. Data were collected, pre-processed, modeled, and analyzed using Linear Regression, Gradient Boosting, and Random Forest algorithms. Our results show that the Gradient Boosting algorithm model performed better: Mean Absolute Error (25.244), Root Mean Square Error (87.667), and Coefficient of Determination (0.642). In this sense, this study contributes in two ways: first, it helps organizational decision-making and improves the collection service provided to the local community. Second, this study collaborates with the scholarly literature reinforcing the potential of data mining for urban solid waste management.

Methodology proposed for photogrammetric monitoring of the exotic species Hovenia dulcis Thunb. in the Green Belt area surrounding the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, RS, Brazil

known as Japanese raisin tree, coming from Asia, detected in a protected area of 465.0 ha surrounding the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, RS, Brazil, named “Green Belt.” In this context, this research aimed at developing an aerial monitoring system able to identify and quantify the extension in the Green Belt area that this species invaded, as well as describing the impacts caused on the local forest community. We collected data from an ultralight Flyer GT aircraft equipped with a vertical camera. The images were taking in June and July 2015, when
H. dulcis
trees have shed their leaves, displaying a gray color, and September and October 2015, when the leaves are young and with a light green color. Based on the methodology proposed trough aerial monitoring by photogrammetry, the results indicated that the total invaded area by
H. dulcis
in the Green Belt of Santa Cruz do Sul County, RS, was 131.8 ha, corresponding to 20.9% of the total area. To validate this method, a quantitative comparison between the result from a terrestrial fieldwork carried out and the proposed method showed no significant differences in the estimated area occupied by
H. dulcis
. We concluded that these results validate the proposed aerial assessment method.

Objetivo: identificar a percepção do conhecimento dos pesquisadores sobre o uso das informações tecnológicas contidas em bases de patentes como uma fonte para desenvolvimento de pesquisas acadêmicas (científicas e/ou tecnológicas). Método: Este estudo realizou uma Survey junto aos 43 programas de Pós-Graduação Stricto Sensu existentes no Brasil da área de Engenharias I, subárea Engenharia Sanitária da Capes. Originalidade/Relevância: Grande parte da informação tecnológica disponível no mundo consta apenas em documentos de patentes, a originalidade deste estudo consiste na identificação do uso de tais informações pelos pesquisadores. Assim, evidenciar a aplicação desse conhecimento em pesquisas acadêmicas pode leva-las a outro nível de conhecimento. Resultados: Identificamos que apenas 33% dos pesquisadores utilizam as bases de patentes como fonte de informação tecnológica, onde mais de 65% das buscas foca na verificação da possibilidade de patenteamento, constatamos que tais informações não são aplicadas em pesquisas acadêmicas, havendo amplo espaço para difusão e aplicação de tais conhecimentos. Contribuições Sociais/Gerenciais: A ampliação do uso das informações tecnológicas possibilitará à produção acadêmica o que há de mais recente em tecnologia, produtos ou processos, no mundo. Do ponto de vista gerencial e a partir da identificação do baixo uso das bases de patentes observou-se a necessidade do desenvolvimento de um método e/ou ferramenta que tornará mais amigável o uso de patentes como fonte de informação tecnológica para os mesmos.

A Teoria das Restrições (TOC) possibilita identificar, controlar e gerenciar da melhor maneira os gargalos em qualquer sistema produtivo por meio de cincos passos para o gerenciamento das restrições. O objetivo do presente trabalho é aumentar o desempenho do processo produtivo com a eliminação dos gargalos através da aplicação da Teoria das Restrições e das diretrizes dos seus cinco passos de focalização em uma indústria de colchões situada no Rio Grande do Sul. A pesquisa foi realizada com cunho objetivo exploratório e descritivo à Teoria das Restrições, pesquisa-ação com intervenções e ainda outras técnicas de avaliação, análise e identificação para melhoria no processo, em que se apresentam como ferramentas de auxílio. Os resultados encontrados relacionam-se com a identificação dos gargalos, noção do processo gargalo e sua eliminação. Na etapa 2 da TOC 1 (realizada no setor de revisão e embalagem), a quantidade de peças por hora aumentou de 43 para 51 o que significa 18,6%, onde posteriormente na etapa 4 de 51 para 72 peças, ou seja, um aumento de 41%, em decorrência da compra de um embaladora automática, sendo que ainda nesta TOC, foi possível a redução de 5 para 3 funcionários. Com a TOC 2 (realizada no setor de montagem) a evolução de peças foi de 59 para 71, cerca de 24%, devido as mudanças de layout e fluxo de produção contando ainda com a redução de 17 para 11 funcionários no setor. Com os resultados obteve-se ganhos significativos em produtividade, melhorando-se assim a performance da unidade fabril

Objective: This study seeks to identify the methods and tools described in international scientific documents for identifying environmental impacts in plastics industry projects. Method: To identify the methods and tools, an integrative literature review was developed, seeking to explore and identify the state of the art regarding the objective of the study. Results and Discussion: The results indicate that Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the most prominent method for identifying environmental impacts in the plastics industry, and is applied to improve production processes, product design and end-of-life disposal, regardless of the sector within this industry. However, different databases and approaches are used to identify and improve processes and design in this sector. Research Implications: It is a study with vast potential to show how environmental concerns are within plastic industry projects and how impacts related to design, production process and end of life are being identified in this sector.
