Transformative Communication Radar: Practices, Action and Praxis Communication in Solidarity Economy Networks in Portugal and Catalonia
This article explores the transformational character of solidarity economy network communication in Portugal and Catalonia, focusing on the first two months of the crisis brought on by COVID-19. We assume that what these networks choose to convey (or remain silent on) in their public communications reflects their positions in the fields of action and values and their theoretical alignment, establishing an ethico-political orientation. Through the analysis of virtual content conveyed by solidarity economy organisations, we analyse the topics covered, the types of content and sources cited, and the level of demand in the discourse, as well as their individual, institutional and collective character. The results reveal very different communicative approaches in each of the cases analysed: from silence or total absence of communicative practices to what can be considered a transformational praxis communication, based on collective action challenging the structures of power and domination and pointing out ways to overcome them. The article proposes a transformative communication radar linking Habermas’s theory of communicative action and Fuchs’s Marxist-inspired praxis communication concept, as a way of distinguishing merely instrumental communicative approaches from those guided by communicative and cooperative rationality driving new agreements and societal transformations.
Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid Protects Against Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Cell Death via Mitophagy in Human Neuroblastoma Cells
Mitochondrial dysfunction has been deeply implicated in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, to keep a healthy mitochondrial population, a balanced mitochondrial turnover must be achieved. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is neuroprotective in various neurodegenerative disease models; however, the mechanisms involved are still incompletely characterized. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective role of TUDCA against mitochondrial damage triggered by the mitochondrial uncoupler carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophelyhydrazone (CCCP). Herein, we show that TUDCA significantly prevents CCCP-induced cell death, ROS generation, and mitochondrial damage. Our results indicate that the neuroprotective role of TUDCA in this cell model is mediated by parkin and depends on mitophagy. The demonstration that pharmacological up-regulation of mitophagy by TUDCA prevents neurodegeneration provides new insights for the use of TUDCA as a modulator of mitochondrial activity and turnover, with implications in neurodegenerative diseases.
Genotoxicity and mutagenicity research in Quilombola communities
The Quilombola communities are mostly isolated and deprived of sources of treated water, garbage collection and sewage, consuming fresh water from wells, streams, lakes, among others. This lack of basic infrastructure can be a relevant factor in exposing residents to substances and factors that are harmful to the integrity of their genetic material that can lead to carcinogenesis. Based on this, the objective of this study was to evaluate the genomic and mutagenic/cytotoxic damage in the adult population of two Quilombola communities (one urban and another rural region), in the state of Goiás, Brazil. For this purpose, the leukocyte of peripheral blood Comet Assay in 68 individuals and Micronucleus Test from exfoliated buccal cells of oral mucosa in 21 volunteers were performed. The results evidenced genomic damage, especially for the community of Aparecida de Goiânia city, which detected significant values ( p  < 0.05), for the length of the comet’s tail and for of the Olive Tail Moment. In the micronucleus test, significant differences were only detected ( p  < 0.05), when it came to the distribution of nuclear changes among the groups. Therefore, it is essential to perform constant population biomonitoring studies to help guarantee health and, consequently, the quality of life.
Association of Salt Iodization and Urine Iodine Concentration in Schoolchildren from Public Schools in Northeast of Brazil
Iodine deficiency (ID) is recognized as a leading risk factor for child development. Universal salt iodization (USI) is an effective and well-established intervention strategy for the prevention of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). To evaluate the levels of iodine in household salt samples and the urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in schoolchildren aged 6 to 14 years in public schools in Bahia, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1231 students (6 to 14 years old) from 17 public schools in Bahia. The iodine concentration was evaluated in salt and UIC samples. The adapted Sandell–Kolthoff reaction was used to determine urinary iodine levels. A spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) was used to examine the reduction of ceric ammonium sulfate. A standard iodine solution using a potassium iodate was used to extrapolate the iodine concentrations. The total of 665 salt samples had a median iodine concentration of 24 mg/kg (25th–75th percentile 17.0 to 28.5 mg/kg). The largest proportion (79.6%) of salt samples had iodine concentration in the recommended range, 17.6% of the samples presented iodine at a salt concentration below the established level (<15 mg/kg) and a small proportion was above it (2.8%). The general mean urinary iodine concentration (MUIC) was 217.53 ± 28.30 μg/L and median was 205.50 μg/L. The students evaluated and the salt samples analyzed showed satisfactory results, as recommended by Brazilian legislation and nutritional recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Impact of environmental covariates on genotype-environment interactions in a semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil
Limited knowledge exists on the impact of environmental covariates on the genotype-by-environment (G × E) interaction in melon cultivated under semi-arid conditions. This study assessed the influence of environmental covariables on G × E interactions and identified melon genotypes demonstrating adaptability and stability. Thirteen yellow melon hybrids were evaluated in randomized blocks with three replications across four municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte State during two distinct seasons. Traits investigated included the number of fruits per plant and soluble solids. Factor regression and principal component analysis were employed to quantify the influence of maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, and radiation on the G × E interactions. The Harmonic Mean of Relative Performance of the Genotypic Values method identified adapted and stable genotypes. The covariate-biplot model established relationships between crucial environmental covariables and their impact on the number of fruits per plant and soluble solids. Minimum temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation significantly contributed to the G × E interactions in melon. Hybrids exhibited distinct sensitivities to environmental covariates, with HA-08 emerging as the most stable and adapted hybrid for both the number of fruits per plant and soluble solids.
Banded karyotype of Nelore cattle (Bos taurus indicus Linnaeus, 1758)
Chromosome banding techniques were applied and standardized to obtain karyotype characteristics for the first time in Brazil of Nelore cattle – Bos taurus indicus Linnaeus, 1758 – (bovine subspecies most prominent in Brazilian livestock). Blood samples were collected from the animals of the School of Agrarian and Biological Sciences of the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás, two males and two females of pure breed. These samples were submitted to the cell culture method to study metaphase chromosomes. Chromosome banding techniques (C, G and NOR) revealed the karyotype architecture of Nelore cattle common with that of other breeds of zebu cattle formerly karyotyped. The diploid chromosome number was invariably normal, 2n = 60. C-banding revealed C-positive heterochromatin in centromeric regions almost in all chromosomes. G-banding presented the expected band pattern in the respective chromosome pairs in correspondence with the established chromosomal patterns for the species. Ag-staining for nucleolus organizer regions (AgNOR) was identified on the telomeric end of the long arm in 7 autosomal chromosomes. In this study we found more regions in chromosomes with staining than presented in the literature for the Bos indicus group (BIN). These NOR regions were repeated on the same chromosomes for the 4 animals studied.
Standards of adherence to cancer prevention guidelines in female breast cancer survivors
Objective The aim of this study was to assess the main patterns of adherence to the cancer prevention guidelines proposed by the 2018 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) by breast cancer survivors. Methods Cross-sectional study that used the Principal Component Factor Analysis to identify the adherence patterns and the highest (Q4) and lowest (Q1) quartiles of each pattern. Results Two main adherence patterns were identified: ‘grains/fruits/fiber’ —adherence to a healthy body mass index (BMI), a diet rich in grains, vegetables, fruits and beans and total fiber—; a second, ‘fast-food/sugar’ —adherence to the BMI, limiting the consumption of fast food, processed foods, sugar and starch and the consumption of sugary drinks—. The ‘fast-food/sugar’ pattern has the greatest influence on BMI (0.4672). Lower weight (p=0.005; p=0.001) and BMI (p=0.001; p<0.001) are observed in women at the Q4 of the two patterns, respectively. Conclusions Breast cancer survivors have a pattern of adherence to the guidelines characterized by greater consumption of grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, and fiber; and another characterized by a limited consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks, with a greater impact on BMI.  
Consumption of Food Offered by Delivery Applications (Apps)
This study aimed to investigate whether the use of food delivery applications is related to food consumption practices. Methods: Data collection was carried out between 5 and 20 June 2020 in a Brazilian capital with a final sample of 2113 individuals. The instrument included questions about socioeconomic characteristics, anthropometric data, and information about eating practices and the use of delivery apps. Logistic regression models were developed with the consumption of each food group as the outcome variable and the use of the application as the exposure variable. Results: Of those interviewed, 78.1% used delivery apps to purchase food. The frequencies of the consumption of foods considered markers of healthy eating were higher for individuals who did not use the applications (59.7% vs. 38.7% for the daily consumption of fresh fruit, respectively, p < 0.0001). The frequencies of the consumption of items considered markers of unhealthy eating were higher for individuals who used apps to purchase food prepared outside the home compared to those who did not (53.7 vs. 38.1 for weekly consumption of hamburgers, respectively, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: The use of delivery applications influenced the users’ eating practices through the acquisition of food within the digital scope and is related to a greater frequency of the consumption of unhealthy items by users.
Carbon Footprint of Away-From-Home Food Consumption in Brazilian Diet
Environmentally unsustainable diets are often characterized by being high in calories, processed foods, and red meats, characteristics related to away-from-home food (AFHF). The aim of this study is to evaluate if AFHF consumption is related to environmental sustainability. Data of 20,780 adults from 24 h recalls collected in the 2017–2018 Brazilian National Dietary Survey (NDS) were used to estimate carbon footprint coefficients. The mean carbon footprint was estimated among individuals who consumed AFHF and non-consumers. Linear regression models were used to evaluate differences between away-from-home eating and the carbon footprint of the diet, adjusting for age and income. A total of 41% of Brazilians consumed AFHF during the previous day. The mean carbon footprint from foods consumed away from home represented 18% of the total carbon footprint. AFHF was positively associated with increased total carbon footprint (β: 204.1; p-value: 0.0145). In conclusion, the consumption of foods away from home in urban areas of Brazil was associated with atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions independently of age and income. Away-from-home food consumption should be considered to reinforce the influence of diet on individual and planet health.
Thigh muscle by CT images as a predictor of mortality in patients with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer
This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of thigh muscle assessed by CT images to predict overall mortality in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). This was a multicenter cohort study including adults (≥ 18 years old) newly diagnosed with CRC, who performed a diagnostic computed tomography (CT) exam including thigh regions. CT images were analyzed to evaluate skeletal muscle (SM in cm 2 ), skeletal muscle index (SMI in cm 2 /m 2 ), and skeletal muscle density (SMD in HU). Muscle abnormalities (low SM, SMI, and SMD) were defined as the values below the median by sex. Kaplan–Meyer curves and hazard ratios (HRs) for low SM, SMI and SMD were evaluated for overall mortality, stratified by sex. A total of 257 patients were included in the final analysis. Patients’ mean age was 62.6 ± 12.1 years, and 50.2% (n = 129) were females. In males, low thigh SMI was associated with shorter survival (log-rank P  = .02). Furthermore, this low thigh SMI (cm 2 /m 2 ) was independently associated with higher mortality rates (HR adjusted 2.08, 95% CI 1.03–4.18). Our additional findings demonstrated that low SMD was independently associated with overall mortality among early-stage patients (I–III) (HR adjusted 2.78, 95% CI 1.26–6.15).
