Homogenization and impoverishment of taxonomic and functional diversity of ants in Eucalyptus plantations
Despite its negative impacts on the environment and biodiversity, tree plantations can contribute to biodiversity conservation in fragmented landscapes, as they harbor many native species. In this study, we investigated the impact of Eucalyptus plantations on the taxonomic and functional diversity of ant communities, comparing ant communities sampled in managed and unmanaged (abandoned for 28 years) Eucalyptus plantations, and native Atlantic rain forests. Eucalyptus plantations, both managed and unmanaged, reduced the functional diversity and increased the similarity between ant communities leading to functional homogenization. While communities in managed plantations had the lowest values of both taxonomic and functional ant diversities, ant communities from unmanaged plantations had similar values of species richness, functional redundancy and Rao’s Q compared to ant communities from forest patches (although functional richness was lower). In addition, communities in unmanaged Eucalyptus plantations were taxonomically and functionally more similar to communities located in managed plantations, indicating that Eucalyptus plantations have a severe long-term impact on ant communities. These results indicate that natural regeneration may mitigate the impact of Eucalyptus management, particularly regarding the functional structure of the community (α diversity), although it does not attenuate the effects of long term homogenization in community composition (β diversity).
CONCEPÇÕES DOCENTES ACERCA DA BIODIVERSIDADE NA PERSPECTIVA DA SISTEMÁTICA FILOGENÉTICA
Olhar para Biodiversidade sob a ótica da Sistemática Filogenética é garantir que a evolução assuma o status central no ensino de Ciências e Biologia. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar as concepções docentes acerca da Diversidade Biológica na perspectiva cladística, a fim de identificar formação, domínio, aplicação e articulação desses saberes e práticas. A partir de pesquisa qualiquantitativa são discutidas as concepções de participantes que foram obtidas por meio de questionário aberto e análise de seus conteúdos em categorias. Obteve-se a participação de 66 docentes que, a partir da experiência em sala de aula, foram divididos em quatro grupos, entre iniciantes, experientes e formadores. As análises indicam que 93,4% dos participantes tiveram formação inicial em filogenia, sobretudo nos componentes de zoologia e botânica e com a utilização de cladogramas. Os participantes consideram os termos cladogramas, sinapomorfia, apomorfia, Biodiversidade e homologia, como imprescindíveis para compreensão das relações filogenéticas. Entretanto, apresentam equívocos e imprecisões, tanto nas definições quanto nas aplicações conceituais. Os docentes utilizam argumentos pautados em seleção natural, adaptação, cladogênese, anagênese, especiação, variabilidade genética, coevolução, extinções e parentesco para justificarem e estabelecerem relações entre Evolução e Biodiversidade. Mutação não foi mencionada, em nenhum dos grupos, como uma das fontes de variabilidade genética. Mesmo ante as dificuldades, 74% alegaram usar cladogramas em suas aulas e que este recurso facilita a compreensão e visualização de toda variedade de organismos, além de promover o ‘pensamento em árvore. Defendem que a Sistemática Filogenética é uma forma de integrar o ensino de Biodiversidade, mas que é necessário investir em formação, pois os conceitos são difíceis de serem ensinados, ao ponto de gerar inibição na participação do questionário. Por fim, um caminho promissor pode ser, além de formação continuada, a produção de bibliografias, para educação básica, com a temática.
Ant Occupation of Twigs in the Leaf Litter of the Atlantic Forest: Influence of the Environment and External Twig Structure
Twig cavities are microhabitats that may be used by different ant species for nesting and colony expansion. However, ants do not colonize all twigs available in the leaf litter, pointing to the existence of environmental or twig-related filters. In this study, we analyzed which environmental and twig attributes affected twig occupation by ants. We surveyed seven plots in six Atlantic forest sites in southeastern Brazil. To characterize the environmental filters, we quantified canopy cover and leaf litter moisture and depth. At the twig level, we measured twig length and diameter and the area and circumference of all holes in each twig. Ant colonies occupied 13.42% of the 4,805 twigs surveyed, and we recorded a total of 52 twig-nesting ant species. Brachymyrmex admotus was the most frequent species. Ant species richness increased with canopy cover and leaf litter moisture and with the relative number of occupied twigs. In addition, we found that ant species richness increased with length and diameter of the twigs, and that twigs with smaller holes were more frequently occupied by ants, regardless of the availability of larger diameter holes. Our work demonstrates that both environmental characteristics and twig morphology can structure occupation of twigs by ants. In addition, we demonstrated that certain species show a preference for certain twig types. We highlight the importance of twigs for maintaining ant diversity and for colony expansion of arboreal species and species inhabiting the leaf litter.
Ant diversity (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and predation by ants on the different stages of the sugarcane borer life cycle Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
The sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis is an important pest of sugarcane and ants are one of its main predators. The practice of burning sugarcane straw in situ after harvest has been gradually replaced in Brazil by other practices. However, it is unknown whether ants can control the abundance of this borer in the presence of straw. In this study, we assessed the diversity and species composition of ants attacking different stages of the pest's life cycle. Specifically, we asked whether the species richness and abundance of ants varies during the course of day and a year. We established one-hectare plots at random locations in a sugarcane plantation. Once a month, we collected 20 samples of each stage of the D. saccharalis life cycle and randomly distributed these samples as bait on plants spaced 20 m apart within a plot. Ants were collected daily in the morning and afternoon over a period of 12 months. We identified several aspects of ant feeding behaviour that may affect their biological control of the borer: (1) the greatest number of ants were collected from baits consisting of the immature stages of the sugarcane borer, (2) ants were most active in the morning and (3) their activity varied from month to month. Solenopsis saevissima and morphotypes of Crematogaster sp.7 and Pheidole sp.35 are potentially important predators of borers in sugarcane crops in which the straw is not burnt. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
Using Ant Community Data for Monitoring Tropical Forest Restoration in the Seasonal Atlantic Forest in Brazil
Background and Research Aims: Monitoring is essential for assessing the success of ecological restoration efforts. Ants, with their vast diversity and functional roles, serve as a significant group for such analyses. This study focused on evaluating ant communities to identify potential arboreal species that could serve as indicators of the forest restoration process. Methods: The study was carried out in restoration areas within the Seasonal Semideciduous Forest, located in two landscapes within the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. We examined forest restoration plantations at three different developmental stages—early, middle, and late—alongside a native reference forest. Key parameters such as canopy cover and density of trees and saplings were measured. Ants were actively sampled throughout different seasons. We assessed ant community compositions across restoration gradients and investigated their association with vegetation structure. We also identified ant species that could serve as restoration indicators. Results: We identified a total of 60 species and 19 morphospecies. However, no significant difference in species richness was observed among the areas. Ant communities in restoration areas exhibited more similarity to each other than to those in native forests. Therefore, even in the oldest restored sections, ant communities have not yet converged with those of the reference ecosystem. Although we identified some indicator species within certain areas, none of these were arboreal. Conclusion: The composition of the ant community is more valuable than its species richness for monitoring tropical forest restoration. The historical context of restoration areas and the age of restoration efforts may influence the results. Implications for conservation: Early stages of tropical forest restoration do not recover the biodiversity and composition of arboreal ants found in reference forests. Additional studies are needed to better understand changes in the ant communities over time, providing information to improve monitoring, management and the conservation value.
Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Vineyards That Are Infested or Uninfested With Eurhizococcus brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Margarodidae) in Southeastern Brazil
The association between ants and mealybugs can result in damage to agriculture, including vineyards. In southern Brazil, the ant Linepithema micans F. contributes to the dispersal of Eurhizococcus brasiliensis (Wille) (ground pearl), a root mealybug that can lead to economic losses. In this study, the ant communities in vineyards that were infested or uninfested with ground pearls were evaluated in the primary municipalities that produce the Niágara Rosada variety of grapes in southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis of this study was that the composition of the ant community differs between vineyards with and without E. brasiliensis. The ants were collected using subterranean traps in 10 vineyards infested with this mealybug and 10 uninfested vineyards. There was no significant association between ground pearls and the composition or richness of the ant species. Solenopsis invicta (Buren) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) was the most frequently observed, and Pheidole aberrans (Mayr), Pheidole subarmata (Mayr), and Brachymyrmex incisus F. were common, especially in the rainy season when ground-pearl nymphs were prevalent in the state of São Paulo. Species from preserved or specialized environments were recorded in the vineyards, even with the use of conventional management techniques.
Occurrence of Pheidole tijucana Borgmeier, 1927 (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil
Pheidole Westwood, 1839 is a hyperdiverse ant genus that is widely distributed in a variety of terrestrial ecosystems, especially in the tropics. The identification of Pheidole species is challenging, thus contributing to the description of several questionable morphospecies in the literature and making the geographic distribution of most species uncertain. In this work, we present the first records of Pheidole tijucana Borgmeier, 1927 from the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The specimens were recorded at Parque Ibirapuera Conservação, an urban green area located in the southern part of the city of São Paulo. The sampling was performed in 2015, 2016, and 2017 using pitfall traps. In total, 224 specimens (one major worker and 223 minor workers) of P. tijucana were recorded. Our new data help fill a distribution gap and highlights the importance of reporting species that are a challenge to identify.
Identification and Characterization of Wolbachia in Solenopsis saevissima Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Southeastern Brazil
The genus Solenopsis appears to have evolved and radiated very rapidly in South America and then spread throughout the rest of the continent. As part of the expansion process, distribution patterns and different degrees of geographic isolation among populations of S. saevissima can be observed. We have investigated the presence of Wolbachia in 52 colonies and 1623 individuals in southeastern Brazil. Detection of Wolbachia infection was based on amplification of the 16S rRNA and wsp genes by polymerase chain reactions. Wolbachia was found in only one of the four locations investigated and it was observed that the populations were polymorphic for infection. The infection level observed increased during the period of screening. In particular, double infection (16SWA and B) increased from 44% in 2005 to 90% in 2006. The A-group of Wolbachia from the wsp sequences was determined by sequencing. However, two variant wsp sequences were detected in Wolbachia present in these populations. The alignment of our sequences with those deposited in GenBank indicated significant differences in relation to homologous sequences. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using parsimony, and confidence intervals were estimated by bootstrapping. Then the divergence of the Wolbachia of S. saevissima in the populations studied with other variants allowed us to verify that wSS1 and dwSS2 formed a distinct clade within the A-group (>75%). These results can be useful in studies on the dynamics of ant populations.
Winged ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) presence in twigs on the leaf litter of Atlantic Forest
In the leaf litter, ants have various nesting resources available, such as live or dead trunks, twigs, leaves, fruits and seeds. On the twigs, there are adults and immature individuals, but also the queen and winged. The production of wings requires time and energy from the colony. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of winged in ant colonies in twigs on the leaf litter. Our prediction is that the richness and abundance of winged in twigs are the greatest in rainy months. We collected all twigs with ants in 552 plots with 16 m2, totaling 8,832 m2 of leaf litter, in areas located in the Brazilian Atlantic Domain. We compared the species richness and the number of colonies with and without winged, as well as the number of winged over a year. In total, we collected 1,521 twigs with colonies belonging to 92 species of ants. The rate of twigs with winged was low, about 12%. In colonies with winged, the total number of twigs, species and amount of winged does not differ between the months considered dry and rainy. The majority of winged species are leaf litter dwellers, such as Linepithema neotropicum, recorded with the highest amount of winged irrespective of the period. Arboreal species colonized 15% of the twigs and, in 1/3 of these species, winged were recorded as part of the composition of the colony. Although winged represent a small percentage of the colony in twigs, our results indicate that this feature is important for the life cycle of 44% of the species that occupy twigs, considering that winged are fundamental for the dispersion of the colony. Resumo: Na serapilheira as formigas têm disponíveis diversos recursos de nidificação, como troncos e galhos vivos ou mortos, folhas, frutos e sementes. Nos galhos são encontrados indivíduos adultos e imaturos, mas também rainha e alados. A produção de alados exige tempo e energia por parte da colônia. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a presença de alados em colônias de formigas em galhos na serapilheira. Nossa hipótese é que a riqueza e abundância de alados em galhos são maiores nos meses chuvosos. Nós coletamos todos os galhos com formigas em 552 parcelas de 16 m2, totalizando 8.832 m2 de serapilheira em áreas localizadas no Domínio Atlântico brasileiro. Comparamos a riqueza de espécies e o número de galhos com e sem alados, bem como o número de alados ao longo de um ano. No total coletamos 1.521 galhos com colônias, pertencentes a 92 espécies de formigas; a taxa de galhos com alados foi baixa, cerca de 12%. Nas colônias com alados, o número total de galhos, espécies e quantidade de alados não diferem entre os meses secos ou chuvosos. A maioria das espécies com alados é habitante da serapilheira, como Linepithema neotropicum, registrada com a maior quantidade de alados, independente do período. Espécies arborícolas colonizaram 15% dos galhos e, em 1/3 dessas espécies, alados foram registrados fazendo parte da composição da colônia. Apesar de os alados representarem uma pequena porcentagem da colônia em galhos, nossos resultados indicam que este recurso é importante para o ciclo de vida de 50% das espécies que os ocupam, considerando que alados são fundamentais para a dispersão da colônia.
What do different landscapes of the Atlantic Forest reveal about the occurrence of Discothyrea Roger, 1863 (Formicidae: Proceratiinae)?
Discothyrea is a genus composed of specialist predatory species rarely recorded and with little known biology. Specimen collection is usually associated with preserved native vegetation. In this work, we explore the landscape of sites with occurrence of Discothyrea seeking to improve knowledge about the natural history of this genus. Species of Discothyrea were recorded in ten Atlantic Forest sites. We analyzed the landscape around the place of occurrence of each species using a 500-m buffer. We classified the landscape as heterogeneous and homogeneous according to the percentage of natural (native vegetation), urban, and rural areas. We found 67 specimens of Discothyrea; 59 of them were D. sexarticulata, occurring in 88% of the fragments. There were also eight specimens of D. neotropica occurring in 12% of the fragments. The results show that D. sexarticulata can be found in homogeneous landscapes with anthropic influence (0-51% of rural area and 0-68% of urban area). Discothyrea neotropica is found in heterogeneous landscapes with a dominant presence of native vegetation (between 74-95%). The results improve knowledge on the biology of Discothyrea mainly in relation to the vicinity of occurrence sites. In addition, the results indicate that regional studies are important to understand species ecology. Resumo: Discothyrea é um gênero composto por espécies predadoras especialistas, raramente registradas e com biologia pouca conhecida. A coleta de espécimes geralmente está associada à vegetação nativa preservada. Neste trabalho exploramos a paisagem de locais com ocorrência de Discothyrea, buscando incrementar o conhecimento sobre a história natural do gênero. Espécies de Discothyrea foram registradas em dez áreas de Mata Atlântica. A paisagem ao redor do local de ocorrência de cada espécie foi analisada, usando um buffer de 500 m. Classificamos a paisagem em heterogênea e homogênea de acordo com a porcentagem de área natural (vegetação nativa), urbana e rural. Encontramos 67 espécimes de Discothyrea; 59 de D. sexarticulata, em 88% dos fragmentos. E oito espécimes de D. neotropica, em 12% dos fragmentos. Nossos resultados mostram que D. sexarticulata pode ser encontrada em paisagens homogêneas e sob influência antrópica, com 0-51% de área rural e 0-68% de área urbana; e D. neotropica em paisagens heterogêneas, com presença dominante de vegetação nativa (entre 74-95%). Nossos resultados trazem um aporte de conhecimento à biologia de Discothyrea, principalmente em relação às adjacências do local de ocorrência. Além disso, nossos resultados indicam que estudos regionais são importantes ferramentas para o conhecimento da ecologia das espécies.
