The ugly truth behind transitional justice in the post-revolution phase: A constitutional law and economics analysis

This article explores the transitional justice (TJ) dilemmas after revolutions have overthrown autocratic regimes through developing a model that uses a law and economics methodology. The article seeks to answer two questions: Why do post-revolution regimes resort to or ignore TJ policies towards former autocratic regimes? And why is it difficult to adopt and apply welfare-enhancing TJ mechanisms in practice, including popular suggestions within the TJ literature to portray the civil society organizations as the key solution to TJ dilemmas? To answer these questions, the article provides a theoretical positive analysis of the scenarios and dilemmas of TJ. It argues that TJ should function both as an internalization mechanism of negative externalities of the violations of the past-regime, and a form of constitutional arrangements as an ex ante incentives structure to prevent the repetition of these violations. However, due to asymmetric information problems, behavioural biases and the constitutional nature of TJ, the ‘TJ momentum’ precludes most of the traditional solutions for this principal–agent problem.

Assessment of the Effect of Metabolic Syndrome on the Autophagy Marker LC3 in Psoriasis Vulgaris Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

Psoriasis vulgaris, one of the most prevalent chronic inflammatory skin diseases, is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Autophagy, an intracellular degradation system is essential for cell survival and differentiation, and its dysfunction may contribute to metabolic diseases. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 38 psoriasis vulgaris patients and 16 healthy control subjects to 1) Assess immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3); 2) Evaluate the relationship between Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) score, and LC3 expression.
PASI score was evaluated for all psoriasis patients. Lipid profile, blood sugar, and CRP were done for all patients and controls. A punch biopsy was taken from lesional and perilesional skin of psoriasis patients and normal skin of the controls. Tissue sections were prepared. IHC LC3 staining was done and evaluated.
LC3 was nearly absent, in the epidermis of the lesional skin of psoriasis while it was strong among control (p=0.001). LC3 expression in the lesional skin of psoriasis vulgaris was lower than its expression in perilesional (p=0.001). However, LC3 expression was not significantly changed with PASI or the presence/absence of MetS.
A potential link between psoriasis vulgaris and autophagy as assessed by LC3 could be present. LC3 was down-regulated in psoriasis lesions than in normal skin. However, its expression did not change with PASI or MetS. An autophagy enhancer might be used as a possible therapeutic target in psoriasis vulgaris patients.

Diabetes mellitus is a common systemic disease that affects the kidneys and could eventually develop an end-stage renal failure. Renal biopsy is considered a gold standard for histological characterization of diabetic nephropathy, of which renal fibrosis is a dominant component, affecting its stiffness. The objective of this study is to investigate a correlation between renal stiffness obtained by shear wave elastography, renal Doppler resistivity indices, laboratory findings, and the histological characterization depicted by renal biopsies (if feasible) in diabetic nephropathy patients and to compare their results with those obtained from normal population to explore the diagnostic efficacy of shear wave elastography. Shear wave elastography and color duplex US were performed in twenty-six diabetic nephropathy patients and twenty-six healthy (age and sex-matched) control subjects. The shear wave elastography-derived mean value of the renal tissue stiffness was measured (in kilopascals) as well as the resistivity indices of segmental renal arteries, and then the mean values were correlated to patients' clinical-laboratory data (serum creatinine and albumin/ creatinine ratio) and the biopsy results, if feasible. A significant positive correlation was found between the mean resistivity indices and the mean renal cortical stiffness at one hand and the patients' clinical-laboratory data with statistically significant differences found between the control, early, and late stages of diabetic nephropathy. Shear wave elastography is a promising, non-invasive, and accurate diagnostic tool for assessment and differentiation between early and late stages of diabetic nephropathy with a significant positive correlation to the clinical-laboratory and renal Doppler findings.

Background
Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a highly valuable tool for full assessment of the extent of bilateral symmetrical diffuse inflammatory myopathy, owing to its high sensitivity in the detection of edema which correlates with, and sometimes precedes, clinical findings.
Purpose
To evaluate the use of whole-body (WB)-MRI in characterization and full assessment of the extent and distribution of diffuse inflammatory myopathy.
Material and Methods
A prospective study on 15 patients presenting with clinical evidence of inflammatory myopathy. It included 4 boys/men and 11 girls/women (age range, 6–44 years; mean age, 25.5 years). 1.5 T WB-MRI was performed and the distribution and extent of disease severity was assessed according to muscle edema on STIR images.
Results
Four cases of dermatomyositis showed lower limb disease predilection with edema in gluteal, thigh, and calf muscles. The same finding was seen in one case with recurrent polymyositis and three cases with overlap myositis with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Bilateral upper and lower limb myositis was demonstrated in three cases of polymyositis and one case of overlap myositis with scleroderma. Bilateral edema involving all scanned muscle groups was detected in three cases of polymyositis with paraneoplastic syndrome, SLE, and severe active dermatomyositis (including the neck muscles).
Conclusion
WB-MRI is the diagnostic modality of choice for cases of inflammatory myopathy. It accurately detects the most severely affected muscles candidate for biopsy and provides a reliable baseline study for follow-up of disease progression as well as response to treatment.

Numerical study of flow and heat transfer in circular T-shaped junction of different cross-sections

This study investigates fluid flow and convective heat transfer within a smooth, two-dimensional T-shaped junction using a numerical approach. Simulations were conducted by varying the volumetric flow rate ratio r (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1), the Reynolds number Re (500 to 2500), the Prandtl number Pr (1), and the cross-sectional width ratio w (0.5 to 2.5) of the outlet. The fluid dynamics were solved using the vorticity–stream function formulation with a compact upwind finite difference scheme and the Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) method, implemented in MATLAB. Flow behavior was analyzed through streamline and isotherm contours, while local and average Nusselt numbers were computed along the junction walls. The results show that lower r values lead to stronger vortex formation and asymmetry in the flow and temperature fields, while r = 1 yields symmetric and stable patterns. Increasing Re enhances heat transfer and transitions the flow toward unsteady regimes. Similarly, wider outlet configurations (higher w ) promote recirculation and thermal mixing. This study provides valuable insights into how inlet flow, outlet shape, and fluid characteristics interact to influence heat transfer and flow behavior in a smooth T-shaped junction. It also provides insights that can help improve the design of heat exchangers, microfluidic systems, and industrial piping.

Differential diagnosis between aggressive osteoblastoma and low grade osteosarcoma may be very difficult or even impossible on a small biopsy. This study was designed to assess the usefulness of immunoexpression of COX-2 and osteocalcin in the differential diagnosis of the two tumour types.
Immunostaining of COX 2 and osteocalcin were studied in 9 osteoblastomas and 30 osteosarcomas.
All osteoblastomas and 11/20 (55%) high-grade osteosarcomas showed COX-2 immunoreactivity. All low grade osteosarcomas were COX-2 negative. COX-2 was significantly higher (p<0.002) in osteoblastomas 9/9 (100%) than in osteosarcomas 13/30 (43%) and in aggressive osteoblastomas versus low grade osteosarcomas (p<0.01). Osteocalcin was found in tumour cells of all osteosarcomas and osteoblastomas and in the osteoid matrix of 84% of osteosarcomas and 78% of osteoblastomas. Strong osteocalcin was significantly higher (p<0.02) in osteoblastomas (78%) than in osteosarcomas (27%).
COX-2 is a valuable marker in distinction between osteosarcoma and osteoblastoma. Negative COX-2 could confirm the diagnosis of low grade osteosarcoma versus aggressive osteoblastoma. Intensity and distribution of osteocalcin may indicate the degree of osteoblastic differentiation.

Plants often face incompatible growing environments like drought, salinity, cold, frost, and elevated temperatures that affect plant growth and development leading to low yield and, in worse circumstances, plant death. The arsenal of versatile compounds for plant consumption and structure is called metabolites, which allows them to develop strategies to stop enemies, fight pathogens, replace their competitors and go beyond environmental restraints. These elements are formed under particular abiotic stresses like flooding, heat, drought, cold, etc., and biotic stress such as a pathogenic attack, thus associated with survival strategy of plants. Stress responses of plants are vigorous and include multifaceted crosstalk between different levels of regulation, including regulation of metabolism and expression of genes for morphological and physiological adaptation. To date, many of these compounds and their biosynthetic pathways have been found in the plant kingdom. Metabolites like amino acids, phenolics, hormones, polyamines, compatible solutes, antioxidants, pathogen related proteins (PR proteins), etc. are crucial for growth, stress tolerance, and plant defense. This review focuses on promising metabolites involved in stress tolerance under severe conditions and events signaling the mediation of stress-induced metabolic changes are presented.

Syphilis, caused by Treponema pallidum , is resurging globally. Molecular typing allows for the investigation of its epidemiology. In Pakistan and other nations, T. pallidum subsp. pallidum has developed widespread macrolide resistance in the past decade. A study at the Peshawar Regional Blood Centre from June 2020–June 2021 analyzed serum samples from 32,812 blood donors in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, to assess circulating T. pallidum strains and antibiotic resistance. Blood samples were initially screened for T. pallidum antibodies using a chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA). CMIA-reactive samples underwent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeted the polA , tpp47 , bmp , and tp0319 genes. PCR-positive samples were further analyzed for molecular subtyping using a CDC-developed procedure and tp0548 gene examination. All PCR-positive samples were analyzed for the presence of point mutations A2058G and A2059G in 23S rRNA, as well as the G1058C mutation in 16S rRNA. These mutations are known to impart antimicrobial resistance to macrolides and doxycycline, respectively. Out of 32,812 serum samples, 272 (0.83%) were CMIA-reactive, with 46 being PCR-positive. Nine T. pallidum subtypes were identified, predominantly 14d/f. The A2058G mutation in 23S rRNA was found in 78% of cases, while G1058C in 16S rRNA and A2059G in 23S rRNA were absent. The research found donor blood useful for assessing T. pallidum molecular subtypes and antibiotic resistance, especially when chancres are not present. The prevalent subtype was 14d/f (51.85%), and the high macrolide resistance of 36 (78%) indicates caution in using macrolides for syphilis treatment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
