Effect of agricultural extension on technology adoption by Palestinian farmers under Israeli occupation in the West Bank

Even during the conflict, agricultural extension by the Palestinian Authority has played an important role in agricultural development in the West Bank of the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The Ministry of Agriculture of the Palestinian Authority provided the necessary agricultural extension services for Palestinian farmers affected by the Israeli settlements and Segregation Wall. Despite such importance of agricultural extension, few quantitative studies have examined its effect on Palestinian farmers. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify the effect of agricultural extension on technology adoption by Palestinian farmers for appropriate evaluation of the agricultural policies by the Palestinian Authority. The microdata of 79,446 agricultural holdings from the Agricultural Census 2010, which was the only microdata officially published and available at the time of this study, was used. Then, the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method was employed to mitigate the endogenous bias caused by self-selection by farmers in receiving the agricultural extension. The results showed that agricultural extension has positively and significantly affected the adoption of five technologies, namely improved crop varieties, chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizers, pesticides, and biological control. The estimated increase in the adoption rate of those technologies as the average treatment effects on the treated (ATT) by the nearest-neighbor matching method were by 7.1, 7.7, 5.4, 6.8, and 3.8 percentage points respectively. This study proved that agricultural extension promoted the adoption of those technologies even in the conflict. Therefore, agricultural extension by the Palestinian Authority plays an important role in farming by Palestinian farmers. In order to maintain and improve farmers’ livelihoods sustainably, it is necessary to continue the agricultural extension by the Palestinian Authority in the future, considering the behavior of farmers.

Sugars are essential molecules for all terrestrial biota working in many biological processes. Ribose is particularly essential as a building block of RNA, which could have both stored information and catalyzed reactions in primitive life on Earth. Meteorites contain a number of organic compounds including key building blocks of life, i.e., amino acids, nucleobases, and phosphate. An amino acid has also been identified in a cometary sample. However, the presence of extraterrestrial bioimportant sugars remains unclear. We analyzed sugars in 3 carbonaceous chondrites and show evidence of extraterrestrial ribose and other bioessential sugars in primitive meteorites. The 13C-enriched stable carbon isotope compositions (δ13C vs. VPDB) of the detected sugars show that the sugars are of extraterrestrial origin. We also conducted a laboratory simulation experiment of a potential sugar formation reaction in space. The compositions of pentoses in meteorites and the composition of the products of the laboratory simulation suggest that meteoritic sugars were formed by formose-like processes. The mineral compositions of these meteorites further suggest the formation of these sugars both before and after the accretion of their parent asteroids. Meteorites were carriers of prebiotic organic molecules to the early Earth; thus, the detection of extraterrestrial sugars in meteorites establishes the existence of natural geological routes to make and preserve them as well as raising the possibility that extraterrestrial sugars contributed to forming functional biopolymers like RNA on the early Earth or other primitive worlds.

Clinical Outcome of Systemic Treatment for Advanced Soft Tissue Sarcoma: Real-Life Perspective in Japan

The median survival time of patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is typically <12 months. Since 2012, physicians were able to administer second- and/or third-line treatment easily in Japan, following the approval of new drugs, namely, pazopanib, eribulin, and trabectedin. We investigated the real-life experience of adults with advanced STS who received systemic therapy after the approval of the aforementioned new drugs.
We retrospectively evaluated 34 patients (median age: 66 years) with primary STS arising at the extremities/trunk or unresectable local and/or metastatic STS between 2012 and 2019. We evaluated the tumor response and patient survival after initial systemic treatment.
As first-line treatment, doxorubicin and ifosfamide and other drugs were administered to 7 and 27 patients, respectively. Of 31 patients with an evaluable tumor response, partial response was observed in 2 (6.5%) patients, and 16 (52%) patients showed stable disease at 8 weeks. The 1- and 2-year survival rates were 51.4% and 28.4%, respectively. The median overall survival (OS) time was 12.6 months. Tumor response to first-line therapy was related to patient prognosis.
New drugs may be beneficial for patients with advanced STS. When patients cannot receive anthracycline-based chemotherapy because of a high risk of side effects, we believe that the aforementioned drugs may be administered as the first-line treatment.

Treatment strategies for advanced synovial sarcoma: from chemotherapy to TCR-engineered T-cell therapy

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children and adolescents. Despite the availability of new agents such as pazopanib and trabectedin, the prognosis after recurrence remains poor. Adoptive cell therapy is an emerging therapeutic strategy based on the modulation, manipulation, and selection of autologous T-cells in vitro to overcome immune system tolerance to tumor cells. Cancer-testis antigens are particularly attractive targets for immune therapy because male germ cells lack human leukocyte antigen class I molecules, limiting T-cell responses triggered by antigen presentation. T-cell receptor (TCR) engineered T-cell therapy targeting NY-ESO-1 and MAGE-A4 holds significant promise because of the high positive expression of these antigens in tumors. This approach facilitates the reprogramming of T lymphocytes by a transgenic TCR through gene transfer of TCR α and β chains specific to tumor antigens, offering potential therapeutic advances for patients with advanced SS. Clinical trials of TCR-engineered T-cell therapy targeting NY-ESO-1 and MAGE-A4 have been conducted, with an objective response rate reported to be 40–60% across several trials. This promising efficacy suggests that TCR-engineered T-cell therapy could become an attractive novel therapeutic option for advanced SS, which has limited treatment options in later stages. However, if TCR-engineered T-cell therapy is to be used in clinical practice, the standard approach following the failure of doxorubicin-based chemotherapy in patients with advanced SS must be defined. Future studies will be critical for establishing treatment strategies in this field.

Reproduction Experiments of Radial Pyroxene Chondrules Using a Gas-jet Levitation System under Reduced Conditions

Reproduction experiments of radial pyroxene (RP) chondrules were carried out using an Ar–H2 or Ar gas-jet levitation system in a reducing atmosphere in order to simulate chondrule formation in the protoplanetary disk. The experiments reproduced RP-chondrule textures, consisting of sets of thin pyroxene crystals and mesostasis glass between crystals. However, iron partition coefficients between pyroxene and glassy mesostasis (DFe =Fe mol%pyroxene/Fe mol%mesostasis) in natural RP chondrules were much higher than that in the experimentally reproduced RP chondrules. The high DFe in natural RP chondrules suggests that iron was removed from the mesostasis melt at high temperatures after the growth of pyroxene crystals. We found that many small iron-metal inclusions had formed in the mesostasis glass, indicating that FeO in the high-temperature melt of mesostasis was reduced to metallic iron, and iron in the mesostasis diffused into the newly formed metal inclusions. The formation of the iron-metal inclusions in the mesostasis was reproduced by our experiments in a reducing atmosphere, confirming that DFe in natural RP chondrules increased after the growth of RP crystals. Therefore, the DFe of RP chondrules can be an indicator to constrain cooling rates and redox states during chondrule formation.

The Role of Trabectedin in Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Background: Systemic chemotherapy for advanced disease is another therapeutic option in the management of metastases in soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Doxorubicin either alone or in combination with ifosfamide has been used as first-line chemotherapy. Furthermore, in the past decade, new drugs have been shown to be effective in the treatment of advanced STS after the failure of first-line anthracycline-based chemotherapy: trabectedin, pazopanib and eribulin. However, the appropriate usage of these agents has not been established. Methods: We summarized clinical trials of trabectedin focusing on the efficacy and toxicity of trabectedin in the treatment of STS. Results: Trabectedin can be administered safely and effectively to the patients with advanced STS at second line setting or later. Although trabectedin may be effective as first-line treatment in selected patients, anthracycline-based chemotherapy should be recommended because no regimen in addition to trabectedin has proved to be unequivocally superior to doxorubicin as the first-line treatment for locally advanced or metastatic STS. Nucleotide excision repair (NER) and homologous recombination (HRe) repair may be of particular importance as efficacy of trabectedin. Conclusion: Trabectedin has shown a favorable toxicity profile and is an alternative therapeutic option in patients with advanced STS.

A rare case of esophageal metastasis from signet-ring cell carcinoma of the cecum

Background
Metastatic esophageal cancer is rare. Its common primary lesions include lung cancer and breast cancer. Metastatic esophageal cancer originating from colorectal cancer is rarer.
Case presentation
A 79-year-old woman visited our hospital because of lower abdominal discomfort. She was endoscopically diagnosed with type 0–IIa + IIc cancer of the cecum, and biopsy of the lesion showed signet-ring cell carcinoma. With a preoperative clinical staging of cStage I (cT2, cN0, cM0), the patient underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection with D3 lymphadenectomy. Histopathological examination of the resected specimens revealed signet-ring cell carcinoma [type 4, pT4a, pN3 (No. 203), M0, pRM1, stage IIIc, R1]. Despite radial margin positivity, the patient refused resection of the residual tumor and received oral tegafur and uracil.

wild-type colon cancer, but she refused anti-epidermal growth factor receptor therapy. One year after surgery, her blood carcinoembryonic antigen concentration elevated. Colonoscopy showed anastomotic recurrence and biopsy of the lesion showed signet-ring cell carcinoma. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed multiple longitudinal submucosal tumors with erosions on their surfaces in the esophagus. Tumor biopsy revealed signet-ring cell carcinoma. Immunohistochemistry showed that the histological type of the esophageal tumors was the same as that of the primary colon cancer. Based on these findings, the esophageal tumors were diagnosed with metastasis from signet-ring cell carcinoma of the cecum. The oral chemotherapy was replaced with FOLFOX plus bevacizumab. However, the patient’s condition required treatment discontinuation, and she died of cancer progression 1 year and 5 months after surgery.
Conclusions
To our knowledge, this is the first case report on metastatic esophageal cancer from signet-ring cell carcinoma of the cecum. Esophagoscopy showed multiple longitudinal submucosal tumors, which is similar to an endoscopic finding of intramural metastasis from primary esophageal cancer. We consider that the multiple longitudinal submucosal tumors are a notable feature of our case. When metastatic esophageal cancer is suspected, clinicians, endoscopists, and pathologists should consider signet-ring cell carcinoma of the colon as one of potential primary lesions. This consideration could lead the specialists to appropriate examinations and treatments, thereby improving clinical outcomes in patients with the metastasis.

A novel hyperthermia treatment for bone metastases using magnetic materials

Patients with bone metastases in the extremities sometimes require surgical intervention to prevent deterioration of quality of life due to a pathological fracture. The use of localized radiotherapy combined with surgical reinforcement has been a gold standard for the treatment of bone metastases. However, radiotherapy sometimes induces soft tissue damage, including muscle induration and joint contracture. Moreover, cancer cells are not always radiosensitive. Hyperthermia has been studied since the 1940s using an experimental animal model to treat various types of advanced cancer, and studies have now reached the stage of clinical application, especially in conjunction with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Nevertheless, bone metastases have several special properties which discourage oncologists from developing hyperthermic therapeutic strategies. First, the bone is located deep in the body, and has low thermal conductivity due to the thickness of cortical bone and the highly vascularized medulla. To address these issues, we developed new hyperthermic strategies which generate heat using magnetic materials under an alternating electromagnetic field, and started clinical application of this treatment modality. The purpose of this review is to summarize the latest studies on hyperthermic treatment in the field of musculoskeletal tumors, and to introduce the treatment strategy employing our novel hyperthermia approach.

The pristine sample from the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu collected by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft enabled us to analyze the pristine extraterrestrial material without uncontrolled exposure to the Earth’s atmosphere and biosphere. The initial analysis team for the soluble organic matter reported the detection of wide variety of organic molecules including racemic amino acids in the Ryugu samples. Here we report the detection of uracil, one of the four nucleobases in ribonucleic acid, in aqueous extracts from Ryugu samples. In addition, nicotinic acid (niacin, a B
3
vitamer), its derivatives, and imidazoles were detected in search for nitrogen heterocyclic molecules. The observed difference in the concentration of uracil between A0106 and C0107 may be related to the possible differences in the degree of alteration induced by energetic particles such as ultraviolet photons and cosmic rays. The present study strongly suggests that such molecules of prebiotic interest commonly formed in carbonaceous asteroids including Ryugu and were delivered to the early Earth.
Uracil was identified in the sample returned from the asteroid Ryugu. Having been provided to the early Earth as a component in such asteroidal materials, these molecules might have played a role for prebiotic chemical evolution on the early Earth
