Parasitic Louse Flies (Diptera, Hippoboscidae) and Their Associations with Bird Hosts in the South of the Russian Far East
AbstractIn 2017–2020, six species of louse flies of the subfamily Ornithomyinae and two species of the subfamily Lipopteninae were collected in two localities in the Lazovsky State Nature Reserve, Primorskii Territory, Russia. They were taken from 646 birds representing 62 species out of the 3833 birds of the 103 species examined. All the birds were ringed and released into the wild. Ornithoctona momiyamai (Kishida, 1932) and Ornithomya avicularia (Llinnaeus, 1758) were the most abundant louse fry species. Ornithomya fringillina (Curtis, 1856), O. comosa (Austen, 1930), Ornithoctona unicolor Speiser, 1900 and Crataerina hirundinis (Curtis, 1856) were less numerous. A few specimens of mammophilous louse flies Lipoptena cervi (Linnaeus, 1758) and L. fortisetosa (Maa, 1965) were found on birds. A comparative analysis of the louse fly faunas of the Lazovsky State Nature Reserve, Muraviovskii Park (Amurskaya Province, Russia), Hokkaido (Japan) and South Korea was carried out.
Grass-fly larvae (Diptera, Chloropidae): Diversity, habitats, and feeding specializations
The fly family Chloropidae belongs to the higher Diptera series Acalyptratae. It is distributed worldwide and globally comprises 200 genera and about 3000 species in 4 subfamilies: Oscinellinae, Siphonellopsinae, Rhodesiellinae, and Chloropinae. In the fossil record, Chloropidae are known since the Oligocene, with 2 genera found in Baltic amber: one extinct, the other recent. The family includes several important agricultural pests (frit flies, gout flies, Meromyza, seed pests) which injure corn. The feeding preferences of chloropid larvae vary strongly: there are saprophages in the broad sense, true phytophages using both woody and grassy plants (mainly monocots), predators on egg masses of insects and spiders, as well as on scale insects and aphids, and ectoparasites of frogs. Among the 100 families of monocots (Liliopsida), only 11 include species serving as food plants for chloropid larvae. The greatest diversity of habitats and feeding types is observed in the subfamily Oscinellinae. The most advanced subfamily Chloropinae includes mostly phytophagous larvae. A possible scenario of ecological evolution within the family is briefly discussed.
Parasitoid Tachinid Flies (Diptera, Tachinidae) of Yakutia: New Records, Landscape Distribution, and Arealogical Analysis
AbstractNew records of 29 species belonging to 24 genera of 4 subfamilies of Tachinidae from Yakutia are presented. Three species, Exorista (Trycolyga) civilis (Rondani, 1859), E. (Podotachina) grandis (Zetterstedt, 1844), and Phryxe vulgaris (Fallén, 1810), are new to the Yakut fauna; new localities are reported for the rest of the species. 149 species are known in Yakutia, including the three newly added ones. The distribution of the species over the main landscapes and natural-climatic regions of Yakutia is described with an emphasis on the relict steppe associations. Arealogical analysis and comparison with the tachinid faunas of Zabaikalskii Territory of Russia and Mongolia are carried out.
The Louse Flies Ornithophila metallica (Schiner, 1864) and O. gestroi (Rondani, 1878) (Diptera, Hippoboscidae): Distribution and Association with Birds in the Palaearctic
New data are given on distribution and bird host associations of two species of the louse fly genus Ornithophila Rondani, 1878 in Eastern Europe and North Asia. Ornithophila metallica (Schiner, 1864) is recorded for the first time for Tajikistan and China. It is confirmed that this species mostly parasitizes adults and nestlings of small passerines. Ornithophila gestroi (Rondani, 1878) is recorded for the first time for Armenia (Yerevan) and Mongolia, and the lesser kestrel Falco naumanni is recorded for the first time as its host.
Grassflies of the Subfamilies Siphonellopsinae and Chloropinae (Diptera, Chloropidae) and Their Distribution in Different Landscapes of Yakutia
AbstractGrassflies of the subfamilies Siphonellopsinae and Chloropinae (Diptera, Chloropidae) in the fauna of Yakutia are considered. The distribution of the species within the main landscapes, vegetation zones, and natural regions of Yakutia was investigated. Chorological analysis and comparison with some other Asian faunas of the Chloropinae are made. The annotated list contains one species of Sipomellopsinae and 62 species of Chloropinae, with indication of the localities, collecting data, habitats, and larval mode of life. The followimg 11 species are reported for the first time from Yakutia: Apotropina brevivenosa Dely-Draskovits, 1977 (Siphonellopsinae), Chlorops nigripalpis Duda, 1933, Ch. serenus Loew, 1866, Ch. figuratellus Smirnov et Fedoseeva, 1976, Ch. flavipila Smirnov, 1964, Lasiosina obscura Dely-Draskovits, 1979, L. nigriantennata Dely-Draskivits, 1977, L. orientalis Nartshuk, 1991, Meromyza ingrica Nartshuk, 1992, Pseudopachychaeta oscinina (Fallén, 1823), and Thaumatomyia sulcifrons (Becker, 1907) (Chloropinae).

AbstractA catalogue of the type specimens of the lance flies (Diptera, Lonchaeidae) described by L. Czerny, A.A. Stakelberg, G. Morge, and V.G. Kovalev in the collection of the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg is presented and supplied with photographs of the specimens and original labels. The lectotype of Lonchaea stackelbergi (Czerny, 1934) is designated.
A New Alfalfa Nectarophage from the Genus Timia Wiedemann (Diptera, Ulidiidae) in the Forest-Steppe of the Middle Volga Region
AbstractIn the forest-steppe of the Middle Volga region, flower thrips, parasitic Hymenoptera and flies Timia abstersa (Ulidiidae) prevailed among the nectar collectors of alfalfa, accounting for 10–27, 19–47 and 21–52% of their total density, respectively. There is no any morphological adaptation for pollination in T. abstersa. Pollen grains of alfalfa were not found on the surface of the body and in the crop of T. abstersa. They penetrate into the alfalfa flower from its side through the gap between the sail and the oar to absorb nectar. Flies of the genus Timia have short proboscis and obtain nectar in alfalfa flowers using a long special appendage of the oral disk. The highest total density of T. abstersa flies was observed in wide-row alfalfa crops of the second year of life. The alfalfa cultivar had a significant impact on the density of flies on its flowers.
