This was because of numerous issues related to land, taxation, regulations, government support and the perception of the mineral industry, said Alternate Council Member of the Malaysian Chamber of Mines Teoh Lay Hock in Kota Kinabalu. Teoh suggested that mineral rights be given only to companies which had the funds and technical capabilities and were genuinely interested in undertaking exploration and mineral development.

\"The increasing number of motor vehicles in all major urban centres will require the implementation of public transport priority measures, car parking control, local area traffic improvement schemes, restriction on heavy vehicles and greater pedestrianisation,\" he said when opening the \"National Seminar on Changing Directions - Towards Sustainable Transport in Malaysia\" in Penang yesterday. Under the Eighth Malaysia Plan, the Government has allocated RM21 billion, with RM14 billion for roads, RM4.1 billion for railways, RM1.5 billion for ports, RM933 million for airports and RM706 million for urban transport. \"There is much to be done in making our transport system more sustainable,\" said [Abdullah], who pointed to the need for inputs from all stakeholders such as academics, transport planners, the private sector and non-government bodies.
