HER PSYCHIC HAD A HEADACHE
[Nancy Mairs] describes her new book, ''Remembering the Bone House,'' as a ''feminist memoir.'' It consists of 12 interconnected autobiographical essays. The key terms here - ''bone house,'' ''memoir,'' ''autobiographical'' - are defined according to Ms. Mairs's specifications in the first essay, ''The Way In.'' Ms. Mairs tells us in her preface that ''The Way In'' may be read first ''if you like a formal entry through the front door,'' or that we might skip it entirely or ''use it as 'the way out' instead.'' This multiple-choice approach seems ingenuous, at best; most puzzling is the author's own suggestion that we might ignore an essay she uses - not very successfully, I admit - to define her own terms. I confess I took the formal approach, beginning on page 1, and ran into heavy sledding at once, wishing that ''The Way In'' had not found its way into the book and wondering why the author, instead of offering us the bizarre choice of overlooking it, had not simply excised it.
