This book, MOP 145, provides a comprehensive source of information on the design of flexible, close-fit linings for the renewal or rehabilitation of pipes designed for gravity flow such as sanitary sewers, culverts, and storm sewers.Introductory topics discussed include pipe-soil structure interaction, condition assessment and inspection methods, and lining options, but the main focus is on the thickness design of close-fit flexible liners. This design is based on a closed-form solution, which takes into account both the current shape of the host structure as well as the potential imperfections of the liner (annular gap) and of the host structure (cracks or fractures). The design solutions presented can be used for circular and noncircular geometries such as pipe-arch shapes, egg shapes, elliptical shaped pipes (both horizontal and vertical), box shaped pipes (both rectangular and square), and other, undefined site-specific shapes. MOP 145 will provide guidance to consulting engineers tasked with designing flexible close-fit liners for rehabilitation of existing gravity pipe applications.
Lead Levels in Tap Water at Licensed North Carolina Child Care Facilities, 2020–2021

Objectives. To evaluate lead levels in tap water at licensed North Carolina child care facilities. Methods. Between July 2020 and October 2021, we enrolled 4005 facilities in a grant-funded, participatory science testing program. We identified risk factors associated with elevated first-draw lead levels using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results. By sample (n = 22 943), 3% of tap water sources exceeded the 10 parts per billion (ppb) North Carolina hazard level, whereas 25% of tap water sources exceeded 1 ppb, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ reference level. By facility, at least 1 tap water source exceeded 1 ppb and 10 ppb at 56% and 12% of facilities, respectively. Well water reliance was the largest risk factor, followed by participation in Head Start programs and building age. We observed large variability between tap water sources within the same facility. Conclusions. Tap water in child care facilities is a potential lead exposure source for children. Given variability among tap water sources, it is imperative to test every source used for drinking and cooking so appropriate action can be taken to protect children’s health. Jewish histories of the holocaust

For many years, histories of the Holocaust focused on its perpetrators, and only recently have more scholars begun to consider in detail the experiences of victims and survivors, as well as the documents they left behind. This volume contains new research from internationally established scholars. It provides an introduction to and overview of Jewish narratives of the Holocaust. The essays include new considerations of sources ranging from diaries and oral testimony to the hidden Oyneg Shabbes archive of the Warsaw Ghetto; arguments regarding Jewish narratives and how they fit into the larger fields of Holocaust and Genocide studies; and new assessments of Jewish responses to mass murder ranging from ghetto leadership to resistance and memory.
Investigation of Lead and Chromium Exposure After Consumption of Contaminated Cinnamon-Containing Applesauce — United States, November 2023–April 2024

Although lead poisoning can cause detrimental health effects, it is largely preventable. Common exposure sources include contaminated soil, water, and lead-based paint in homes built before the 1978 ban on residential lead-containing paint. In North Carolina, testing for lead is encouraged for all children at ages 1 and 2 years, and is required for children covered by Medicaid. In October 2023, routine pediatric blood lead testing and follow-up investigations conducted by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services identified four asymptomatic cases of lead poisoning associated with consumption of cinnamon-containing applesauce packaged in pouches. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified lead in the cinnamon as the source of contamination; chromium was later also detected in the cinnamon. FDA alerted the public on October 28, and the distributor initiated a voluntary recall the following day. To estimate the impact of the event and characterize reported cases, CDC initiated a national call for cases (defined as a blood lead level [BLL] ≥3.5 μg/dL in a person of any age in ≤3 months after consuming a recalled cinnamon-containing applesauce product). During November 22, 2023-April 12, 2024, a total of 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico reported 566 cases (55% in children aged <2 years, including 20% that were temporally associated with symptoms). The median maximum venous BLL was 7.2 μg/dL (range = 3.5-39.3 μg/dL). The hundreds of children poisoned by this incident highlight the importance of preventing toxic metal contamination of food and promoting routine childhood blood lead testing and follow-up to identify lead exposure sources. Clinicians and public health practitioners should be aware of the potential for exposure to toxic metals from less common sources, including food.

Reduction of Elevated Blood Lead Levels in Children in North Carolina and Vermont, 1996-1999

Background: Few studies have examined factors related to the time required for children's blood lead levels (BLLs) ≥ 10 μg/dL to decline to < 10 μg/dL. Objectives: We used routinely collected surveillance data to determine the length of time and risk factors associated with reducing elevated BLLs in children below the level of concern of 10 μg/dL. Methods: From the North Carolina and Vermont state surveillance databases, we identified a retrospective cohort of 996 children < 6 years of age whose first two blood lead tests produced levels ≥ 10 μg/dL during 1996-1999. Data were stratified into five categories of qualifying BLLs and analyzed using Cox regression. Survival curves were used to describe the time until BLLs declined below the level of concern. We compared three different analytic methods to account for children lost to follow-up. Results: On average, it required alightly more than 1 year (382 days) for a child's BLL to decline to < 10 μg/dL, with the highest BLLs taking even longer. The BLLs of black children [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.84; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.71-0.99], males$({\\rm HR}_{\\text{male}}=0.83;95\\%\\ {\\rm CI},0.71-0.98)$, and children from rural areas$({\\rm HR}_{\\text{rural}}=0.83;95\\%\\ {\\rm CI},0.70-0.97)$took longer to fall below 10 μg/dL than those of other children, after controlling for qualifying BLL and other covariates. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that including censored children estimated a longer time for BLL reduction than when using linear interpolation or when excluding censored children. Conclusion: Children with high confirmatory BLLs, black children, males, and children from rural areas may need additional attention during case management to expedite their BLL reduction time to < 10 μg/dL. Analytic methods that do not account for loss to follow-up may underestimate the time it takes for BLLs to fall below the recommended target level.

William of Sherwood’s Treatise on Syncategorematic Words

This is the first translation of an important medieval work in philosophy, an advanced treatise by the thirteenth-century English logician William of Sherwood. The treatise draws on doctrines developed in Sherwood’s Introduction to Logic, which has also been translated by Professor Kretzmann. William of Sherwood is an important figure in the development of the logica moderna, the distinctively medieval contribution to logic and semantics. As Professor Kretzmann explains, the logica moderna may have originally aimed only ad providing ad hoc rules regarding inferences that involve problematic locutions of ordinary discourse. But its principal aim soon became the development of a more or less general account of the ways in which words are used to stand for things or to affect the meanings of other words. In Sherwood’s time the logica moderna seems to have been thought of as having two branches, an account of the “properties of terms” and an account of the signification and function of “syncategorematic words.” Sherwood deals with the first branch in his Introduction to Logic and with the second branch in the treatise presented here. The translation is copiously annotated to supply the kind of explanatory material a twentieth-century reader may need for an understanding of a thirteenth-century discussion. As Professor Kretzmann points out, many of the problems dealt with in this treatise closely resemble the problems of twentieth-century philosophical logic and philosophy of language.
