Acne vulgaris and the most popular and new cosmetological treatments
Introduction Acne vulgaris is a disease that has an enormous impact on appearance of the skin of the patients and also on their quality of life. Long‐term dermatological treatment, which often lasts years, and disease relapses contribute to the occurrence of low self‐esteem and depression. Acne is one of the 10 most common diseases in the world and the most common inflammatory skin disease. Many methods of dermatological treatment that bring very good results are available. However, educating people with acne on how to take care of their skin on a daily basis to minimize the bleak effects of the disease is an extremely important element. Contemporary cosmetology creates an environment for not only taking care of the skin at home, but also develops in‐office treatments with exfoliation of the dead epidermis as an extremely important and priority part of treatment. The cosmetologist can propose both chemical and apparatus methods, which are selected individually for each client. Objective The objective of this article is to provide information about cosmetological treatment used in acne vulgaris. Methods In this article, we reviewed the published literature, article published in peer‐reviewed journals. Results There are many methods that work well in the case of acne skin care, more and more new treatments appear on the cosmetological market. Conclusion Acne skin care in beauty parlor is very important element.
Efficacy of Oxybrasion and Cosmetic Acids on Selected Skin Parameters in the Treatment with Acne Vulgaris
The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an oxybrasion treatment applied alone and an oxybrasion treatment combined with cosmetic acids in improving acne-prone skin and selected skin parameters. A single-blind placebo study in a sample of 44 women diagnosed with acne vulgaris was conducted. Group A (n = 22) had a series of five oxybrasion treatments, while group B (n = 22) received a synergy of five oxybrasion treatments and a mixture of phytic, pyruvic, and lactic and lactic ferulic acids at 40% pH 1.4. Cosmetic treatments were performed every 14 days, and The Derma Unit SCC3 apparatus (Courage & Khazaka, Cologne, Germany) Sebumeter SM 815 and Corneometer CM825 and GAGS scale were used to check their effectiveness. A Bonferroni post hoc test showed that group A and B did not differ from each other in acne severity before treatment ( = 1.00). However, these samples differed significantly after treatment ( < 0.001), suggesting that combined treatment of oxybrasion and cosmetic acids has a better effect than oxybrasion alone. Also, two treatment conditions (before and after) were statistically different for groups A and B separately ( < 0.001), indicating a similar efficacy of both treatments on acne severity. Cosmetic treatments improved acne-prone skin and selected skin parameters. Better results were obtained by combining an oxybrasion treatment with cosmetic acids. The clinical trial with ID ISRCTN 28257448 approved this study.
Control system for ion Penning traps at the AEgIS experiment at CERN
The AEgIS experiment located at the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN aims to measure the gravitational fall of a cold antihydrogen pulsed beam. The precise observation of the antiatoms in the Earth gravitational field requires a controlled production and manipulation of antihydrogen. The neutral antimatter is obtained via a charge exchange reaction between a cold plasma of antiprotons from ELENA decelerator and a pulse of Rydberg positronium atoms. The current custom electronics designed to operate the 5 and 1 T Penning traps are going to be replaced by a control system based on the ARTIQ & Sinara open hardware and software ecosystem. This solution is present in many atomic, molecular and optical physics experiments and devices such as quantum computers. We report the status of the implementation as well as the main features of the new control system.
Development of a detector for inertial sensing of positronium at AEḡIS (CERN)
The primary goal of the AEgIS collaboration at CERN is to measure the gravitational acceleration on neutral antimatter. Positronium (Ps), the bound state of an electron and a positron, is a suitable candidate for a force-sensitive inertial measurement by means of deflectometry/interferometry. In order to conduct such an experiment, the impact position and time of arrival of Ps atoms at the detector must be detected simultaneously. The detection of a low-velocity Ps beam with a spatial resolution of (88 ± 5) μm was previously demonstrated [1]. Based on the methodology employed in [1] and [2], a hybrid imaging/timing detector with increased spatial resolution of about 10 μm was developed. The performance of a prototype was tested with a positron beam. The concept of the detector and first results are presented.
Pulsed Production of Antihydrogen in AEgIS
Low-temperature antihydrogen atoms are an effective tool to probe the validity of the fundamental laws of Physics, for example the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) for antimatter, and -generally speaking- it is obvious that colder atoms will increase the level of precision. After the first production of cold antihydrogen in 2002 [1], experimental efforts have substantially progressed, with really competitive results already reached by adapting to cold antiatoms some well-known techniques pre- viously developed for ordinary atoms. Unfortunately, the number of antihydrogen atoms that can be produced in dedicated experiments is many orders of magnitude smaller than of hydrogen atoms, so the development of novel techniques to enhance the production of antihydrogen with well defined (and possibly controlled) conditions is essential to improve the sensitivity. We present here some experimental results achieved by the AEgIS Collaboration, based at the CERN AD (Antiproton Decelerator) on the production of antihydrogen in a pulsed mode where the production time of 90% of atoms is known with an uncertainty of ~ 250 ns [2]. The pulsed antihydrogen source is generated by the charge-exchange reaction between Rydberg positronium ( Ps* ) and an antiproton ( p¯ ): p¯ + P s * → H¯ * + e − , where Ps* is produced via the implantation of a pulsed positron beam into a mesoporous silica target, and excited by two consecutive laser pulses, and antiprotons are trapped, cooled and manipulated in Penning-Malmberg traps. The pulsed production (which is a major milestone for AEgIS) makes it possible to select the antihydrogen axial temperature and opens the door for the tuning of the antihydrogen Rydberg states, their de-excitation by pulsed lasers and the manipulation through electric field gradients. In this paper, we present the results achieved by AEgIS in 2018, just before the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), as well as some of the ongoing improvements to the system, aimed at exploiting the lower energy antiproton beam from ELENA [3].
Prognostic value of stage IV neuroblastoma metastatic immunophenotype in the bone marrow: preliminary report
Aim: To correlate the immunophenotype of metastatic cells in the bone marrow of patients with neuroblastoma with early treatment failure. Methods: The studies were performed on bone marrow material obtained from children treated in the department of paediatric oncology, haematology, and transplantology, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland from 1996 to 2003. Immunocytochemical analysis of nervous tissue markers (using the immunomax technique) was performed on 108 bone marrow preparations obtained from 36 children diagnosed with neuroblastoma (stage IV with bone marrow metastases). The analysis included expression of PGP 9.5 protein, substance P, chromogranin A, bombesin, galanin, neuropeptide Y (NPY), and vasoactive intestinal peptide in neuroblastoma metastatic cells defined by the expression of neurone specific enolase. Results: Nineteen relapses occurred within 12 months of the end of treatment. Correlation between the various markers studied and early treatment failure, using Fisher’s exact test, revealed that chromogranin A and NPY are strong indicators of an unfavourable prognosis in patients with stage IV neuroblastoma (p < 0.001 and p < 0.0002, respectively). Conclusion: Determination of metastatic cell immunophenotypes in bone marrow (particularly chromogranin A and NPY) may help establish the short term prognosis in children with neuroblastoma.
Diagnostic performance of ID screen MVV-CAEV Indirect Screening ELISA in identifying small ruminant lentiviruses-infected goats
Diagnostic performance of ID Screen MVV-CAEV Indirect Screening ELISA in identifying goats infected with small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) was evaluated. In total 299 serum samples from the collection of the Laboratory of Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics--109 truly positive and 190 truly negative--were used. To be enrolled in the study a serum sample had to come from at least 2 year-old goat which had reacted identically in two serological surveys preceding sample collection and was kept in a herd of stable serological status confirmed at least twice during preceding 5 years. Moreover, in seropositive herds at least 20% of goats had to be serologically positive at the moment when the serum sample was collected for the study. The test proved to have high accuracy. Area under curve was 98.8% (95% CI: 97.5%, 100%). Diagnostic performance of the test was almost identical (Youlden's index of 90%, sensitivity > 90% and specificity > 95%) within a fairly wide range of cut-off values--between 20% and 60%. At manufacturer's cut-off of 50% sensitivity and specificity were 91.7% (95% CI: 85.0%, 95.6%) and 98.9% (95% CI: 96.2%, 99.7%), respectively. For this cut-off positive likelihood ratio was 87 (95% CI: 22, 346) and negative likelihood ratio was 0.08 (95% CI: 0.04, 0.16). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that ID Screen MVV-CAEV Indirect Screening ELISA is a highly accurate diagnostic test for SRLV infection.
The predicting role of substance P in the neoplastic transformation of the hypoplastic bone marrow
Aims: To estimate the expression of substance P in the haematopoietic cells of hypoplastic bone marrow and define its relationship with the course of bone marrow hypoplasia. Methods: Bone marrow specimens were obtained from 42 children with bone marrow hypoplasia who were hospitalised in the Department of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Transplantology, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poznan, Poland, between 1996 and 2003. Substance P and Ki-67 expression were evaluated using immunochemical and hybridocytochemical assays. Results: The expression of substance P (as evidenced by both immunocytochemical and hybridisation techniques) was confirmed in the cytoplasm of B lymphocytes in 8 of 11 children who developed acute leukaemia in 45 (SD 12) days. The percentage of substance P-positive cells ranged from 67.6 to 95.8 (mean of 81.5% cells with immunocytochemistry and 84.3% with in situ hybridisation). The risk of development of leukaemia secondary to bone marrow hypoplasia was found to be significant (p<0.001) in those children who expressed substance P in normal-looking lymphocytes at the initial bone marrow evaluation. Conclusions: The presence of substance P in B lymphocytes of hypoplastic bone marrow may predict its neoplastic transformation. A marked correlation between substance P-positive bone marrow pattern and the expansion of tumour cells may prove the potential value of this oligopeptide in the pathogenesis of leukaemia.
Ezrin—a useful factor in the prognosis of nephrotic syndrome in children: an immunohistochemical approach
Background: Minimal change disease (MCD) and diffuse mesangial proliferation (DMP) are the most common pathomorphological forms of nephrotic syndrome glomerulopathies in children. The clinical course of DMP can be characterised by either DMP-sensitivity (DMP-S) or DMP-resistance (DMP-R) to steroids, resulting in an unfavourable course of the glomerulopathy. Although the clinical processes of DMP-S and DMP-R are initially identical, resistance to steroids may be foreseen by the immunohistochemical expression of cytoskeleton-associated proteins in podocytes. Aims: To estimate the immunohistochemical expression of ezrin in children with MCD, DMP and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and to evaluate its usefulness in predicting resistance to steroids. Materials and methods: Renal biopsy specimens of patients with MCD (n = 15), DMP (n = 16) and FSGS (n = 6) were taken. The control tissue consisted of normal-appearing cortex taken from kidneys resected for localised neoplasms (n = 6). The indirect immunohistochemical protocol for the use of a monoclonal antibody directed against ezrin was used. Results: The immunohistochemical expression of ezrin in cases progressively reduced from MCD to DMP-S to DMP-R to FSGS. Except for DMP-R and FSGS (p>0.05), the difference in ezrin expression in podocytes was significant. Conclusion: Ezrin can be a potent marker of podocyte injury (podocytopathy) and may help in the histological qualification of MCD, DMP and FSGS. The increased permeability of the filtration barrier in steroid-resistant and proteinuric glomerulopathies may be a consequence of subcellular changes in podocyte-associated proteins following decreased expression of ezrin.
Efficacy of Oxybrasion in the Treatment of Acne Vulgaris: A Preliminary Report
There are many cosmetic methods to reduce skin eruptions in people with acne vulgaris. As oxybrasion is a safe method of exfoliating dead epidermis, our objective was to investigate its effectiveness in young women with acne vulgaris. The Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) and Derma Unit SSC 3 device (Sebumeter SM 815, Corneometer CM 825) were used to assess acne vulgaris and skin properties. Twenty-four women aged 19–21 years (M = 19.50, SD = 0.66) with diagnosed mild acne vulgaris and a high level of sebum (more than 100 μg/cm2) participated in the study. Women on any dermatological treatment within the last 12 months and/or hormonal contraception were excluded. Probands were randomly assigned to two equal groups. Group A (experimental) was oxybrased with 0.9% sodium chloride solution simultaneously with compressed oxygen. Group B (placebo) was the group treated with non-carbonated mineral water and oxygen from the device (not pure). A series of five treatments was performed at 10-day intervals. Skin parameters were measured before and 30 days after the end of treatment. As a result, in group A (experimental), skin hydration and GAGS improved, while sebum on the epidermis was reduced. No side effects were noted. We concluded that oxybrasion is effective in women with acne and safe, as it improved skin parameters; however, further research is needed.
